The first time my birth family went to the Grand Canyon, I was too young to ride a mule, so we didn’t go down. The second time my sister got sick, so we couldn't. The third time my dad weighed too much for a mule. The fourth time, as a young adult I went with a friend, and we hiked the Bright Angel Trail to the river and back up in a day. The park recommends you not attempt this, but we were very fit. Halfway down we walked through a short tunnel, and from the other side the rim looked as far up as we thought it would from the bottom, and the river looked as far down as it did from the rim. The canyon felt twice as deep and far, far bigger than we could have imagined from the rim. We started at dawn and returned at sunset, awed and satisfied.
    Thanks for the wonderful video.

English oldtimer again, I camped at Toroweap on a trip on my own in 2002, within 20 metres of the rim edge. I met a fellow traveller. She had just finished university in Santa Fe and was exploring the canyon like me. Made me feel real good, she was early 20's, I was 57. We hiked, talked and compared our respective lives so far. We sat on the very edge drinking red wine, looking down to lava falls rapids. On return to jacob lake, we shared a hearty meal, hugged and went our separate ways! Life's made of experiences like that, I will never forget that brief friendship.

This place is and will always be in my heart. A representation of majestic beauty crafted by long geological process, no words can express the beauty. No camera can capture its magic .. seeing with own eyes is the only way to deeply feel the grandness .. one moment in my life when I am so thankful for not being blind or color blind ... And what made it everlasting .. this is the only place I chose to bring my most beloved person to come and witness it with me..

as good as this is, it cannot compare to the reality. I recently went about 6 months ago for my first time. I've seen pics ofc but NOTHING can prepare you for the reality. I urge anyone who watches this and says "That's really cool and pretty, but now I don't need to go in person"... please go. True it affects different people differently, but for me it was a profound experience.

Pictures and videos don't do Arizona justice; these places are far grander than any photo can convey. There's nothing like being there in person, whether it's Sedona, the Mogollon Rim, the White Mountains, or anywhere else in Arizona. Such places touch the soul. A photo or video is two-dimensional, whereas being there is an Experience!

I went when I was probably 14 or 15 and it truly changed my life.. I knew it was something to see but growing up I always just pictured a huge whole in the ground but I was very much so ignorant.. I will never forget the way I felt being there it was emotional and spiritual and very much so an experience to say the least.. you are right when you say it affects people differently and I had to comment because I also found it beyond profound. I have never seen any videos or photos that truly show the massiveness and beauty and the energy this place possesses

Words simply cannot express how beautiful this place is. I was at the South Rim of the GC, where there are multiple cliffs where you can sit and just marvel at the nothing-but-canyon that is in front of you. And you will never want to stand back up and walk away.
What a magnificent work of nature.

I've hiked the canyon 5 times and camped here several times. It is my very favourite place in the world. It never ceases to amaze me. I've studied it's topography, geology and the first nations that used to inhabit this place before modern man tried to tame it. I'm an English oldtimer now from Shropshire, guess my last time was 2012, my first time 1994 !

Martin Forrester, you picked a beautiful place to visit. I backpacked in there to Phantom Ranch at the bottom 3 times myself. The 1st. and 3rd. times were from the South Rim, and #2 was from the North Rim. While in the area, did you ever get to Havasu (HAVE-uh-sue) Canyon? That's where the Havasupai (have-uh-SUE-pie) tribe lives. If not, I know there are videos here on the subject.

    • @martinforrester8249

@@jimgreen5788 Sadly no, didn't make Havasupi village. I intended to but hadn't made a reservation for camping. I called the village from Kingman, was told all the lines were down because of flash floods, so missed out ! One trip I regret not having completed.

@@jimgreen5788 Yes thankyou, I have lots of videos stored on U Tube. However, I think it gets exploited too much, selfishly think too many people visit, that doesn't lend itself to the peaceful, tranquil place it must have been before the masses decended. I'm at the age where I cherish the peace and quiet nowadays but can still "go the distance" to find that elusive peace.

@@martinforrester8249 , thankfully, the tribal council was very smart decades ago, and instituted what you alluded to above--mandatory advance reservations in order to keep from being overrun by tourists, and thus destroying their culture. Have a good year. May we soon find COVID behind us.

When I was 14, in March of 1975, I hiked The Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim, 45 miles, in 3 days. We had our reservations to camp in the canyon for a year (waiting list) so we didn't want to forfeit them when we heard a snowstorm was headed there, so continued on. Shortly after we began our descent into the canyon, it began to snow, and didn't let up until the day we came out 3 days later. Down along the river, it was sleeting and blowing fiercely, very cold, very hard (*impossible) to keep our rain ponchos over our packs and the hoods up, given all that wind. (During storms, the wind at the bottom "stirs", blows in all directions, looping, half-vertical wind, not straight-line horizontal.) One of the 5 in our group, though tall and looking strong, wasn't physically prepared for the trek and suffered exposure (hypothermia), grew weak, and the adult discussion was whether someone would need to hike back to Phantom Ranch to use the phone there to call for a helicopter to lift J out of the Canyon. The 2 adult leaders decided that 2 of the group (1 adult and a strong near-adult) would stay at our campsite at the bottom of the North Rim with J, while the other adult and I would continue up to the North Rim and back. So we left our packs with them, and spent Day 2 slogging our way up the North Rim. A short way up, it was snowing so heavily that the trail was lost, so we bushwhacked our way up the North Rim through the snow. Not to be dramatic, but it WAS dramatic, the snow came up to our thighs midway up the North Rim, and if I hadn't been such a strong teenager with so much trust in the adult that was leading and encouraging me, I would never have attempted such a feat. Looking back, it was very dangerous, what with no trail and not knowing what kind of ground (?) was under all that snow, not knowing if it was just snow over vegetation that would result in a death-fall. We had no snow-shoes, no ropes with us, only had rain-ponchos over our parkas (both having hoods) and gloves. In those days, there were no waterproof boots of synthetic material with thinsulite or anything; we had used mink oil to oil our heavy leather boots to "waterproof" them, which did a very good job making them water-resistant and with the use of Moleskin for blisters and double wool socks, our feet made it through, but damn, it was cold, and even with long underwear under our jeans, we were soaked through! Having started that day about 8AM, we finally made it to the top of the North Rim by about 1PM, went out of our way to find the N. Rim snow-marker (not my idea! :), which showed a depth of 7 feet of snow, then headed back down, arriving at camp below by about 4:30PM. Once again, with all the blustery high winds and blowing snow at the bottom by this time, we spent the night in the (fairly nice, fairly large, new, concrete-floored) restroom that was about the size of a baby's room, and slept shoulder to shoulder, with J in the middle to share our bodyheat. The next morning, 1 adult carried J's pack and gear in addition to their own, while the other adult and near-adult "carried" (seriously supported, upheld) J all the way out of the Canyon, with J shuffling along slowly between them, not able to walk independently. Fortunately, the 2 helpers and J were all about the same height, so it was easier for them to support J's weight (though still very tough). It took about 10 hours to climb out, this challenge making the trek much slower, but we made it out, and took photos of us leaning on the South Rim mile-sign amidst 5 feet of snow, proving victory. I still have that photo. A happier (*relieved :) group had never piled back into that VW bug to make the long drive south into the warmth of the sunshine. It took J 2 weeks to recover, and the rest of us a few days, and it remains a trip of a lifetime. Not the conditions I would recommend. ~ Good video; saved to my Arizona Grand Tour playlist, and to my Grand Canyon playlist. (As students at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, one weeknight late (*wee hours :) after laying on the grassy bank of Lake Mary talking and looking at the stars, we decided to drive to The Canyon to see the sunrise, then headed back for class. *The things college kids do. :)

And I imagine the VW was not a lot warmer judging by the one we had in Canada a back ninth early 70's. We did the Canyon in spring a good temperature for hiking and we were in our early 20's . Grand Canyon has always been on my bucket list, but with today's situation, no one is going anywhere. This video fulfilled that perfectly. Stunning visuals, from every angle, high and low, sunrise to sunset. It certainly left me speechless. Thank you SO much !

If you'd like, you can enjoy the visuals shown in my Arizona playlists, including my Grand Canyon playlist. Videos are a poor substitute for being there, but it's the next best thing. :)

I went in my early 70’s and hiked down the Kaibab. No sweat. Go early, carry water, take your time. Turn around at noon. Go!

Yet another amazing video! Thank you!
You obviously take your time with these locations and only shoot under perfect weather conditions. Not an easy thing at times. Also, thank you for listing the camera gear that you use. I'm always wondering what people use.
