Well, I have 21 years on the job, in busy city, Im 42. A few things 1. Don't expect to get rich. 2. Be prepared to be scrutinized on everything you do. Everyone else thinks they know your job better then you do. 3. You will be a different person in 10 years. 4. You WILL get injured on the job in one way or another. 5. Stay in shape, its a great way to relieve stress and and to stay healthy. 6. Stress is huge, never hesitate to talk about your issues with other Coppers. You have to vent now and then. 7. Were human too, you will make mistakes, just alway put officer safety#1 8. Treat people with respect, you never know who your talking to. 9. Never judge people by their background or skin color. Im white and my best partner hands down was a big black guy, we were like Crockett and Tubbs. 10. Your not saving the world, don't think when your off duty the city is going to crumble, enjoy your off time. And always stay safe, stay positive, stay in shape and put in for every training thats available. Oh yea one more thing, if you can go Federal, better pay, benefits and you an travel a lot.

Isai Valdez follow your dreams ... consciously and intentionally continue to align your life with your goal to become a police office...do your research ... talk to your local police officers and gain their knowledge
Isai Valdez just be warned dreams do not always come true. I was a police cadet for two years and went to police Academy which I paid for myself I have a spotless record and I am still not a peace officer. I am heart broken but was able to move on. just be prepared for any reason you get denied.
It's not about physical fitness it's about good judgement and being a good foot soldier. Follow orders, apply common sense, don't embarrass the department too often
You should know: You won't be home for holidays, barbecues, your kids birthday party's.You should know- though you will save life, take life and perhaps give your own,you cannot control this. You should know you will sit in a crowded room and feel alone-we do not have the luxury of sheep. You should know as a police officer you're closer to jail than you've ever been.Finally-be safe, let your instincts prevail..watch people's hands, eyes and words cannot hurt you.Stay tactical, stay alert and stay alive.God Bless.
application for AuroraPD was 3 pages long, I didn't need a reference, and they got back to me within a day. I guess not a lot of people are applying. I have my entrance test in a week, wish me luck!
David FOX we agree! It's refreshing to get this information it to the world and what the process is like. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to not o my watch our videos but comment on them Please like, share and subscribe to our channel
I guess I should say what I tell others. Being a police officer isn't just a career, it consumes you and you simply are a police officer forever, even when you retire the cop in you never leaves because that is who you are, not just what you are. You are subject to numerous tests, written tests, oral interviews where you are intimidated, physical fitness tests, psychological tests, lie detector tests, doctor exam and IF you pass the academy you go through all that again and put on at least a one year-18 month probation. If you don't make it do not feel bad. Many people don't and in fact we released many people who just were clearly not assertive enough or there as back up when needed...it truly is a calling. Remember, as people run out of buildings because of robbery, burglary or someone out of control, your instinct will tell you to run in and eliminate the threat as others run out for their lives. You realize you put a vest on before duty, I took that time to also pray for direction and safety so I could come home to my kids. It is everything only more than you think it may be. Good friends on the force but not many friends that are not police. You will find that you only trust other officers and they trust you. It is a life changing career and you come home each day feeling exhausted because you don't ever have time to not pay attention to what is happening around you or fellow officers... In all though, If you are single it could be a good job. If you are married or plan to be, date for a couple of years. The stress effects not just you but everyone in your house.
This guy is full of shit...…...it is the best job in the world except maybe a fire fighter.....this putz is doing what a lot of cops do and try to elicit praise and sympathy and even maybe get a little poor me hero worship thrown upon themselves......and if he really found the job this difficult then he is weak and a lightweight and should never have been a cop...
Kids can make it from highschool to the academy, but it's very rare that a kid from highschool will have sufficient life experience, involvement in their community and dealing with people, maturity and carrying themselves like an adult with a cool head and understanding of human nature, as well as a deep desperation to put all of their chips in to this basket in being a cop. That's what police forces are looking for; physically fit yes, desire to be a cop yes, but personality, life experience, work experience, are you willing to put all of your chips in to the cop basket? Are you willing to wait years (potentially) to get accepted in to the academy and to improve yourself in all areas constantly in order to do so? That's what it takes.
Gabba Shanking No, it's a completely different occupation. IT will help like going to college would help, but it's more LIFE EXPERIENCE that they look for ie community involvement, volunteer work, ability to communicate with different personalities, which would pertain more to being a cop than going in fire fights and living in tents in a desert.
I will go through academy before my 30. My friend just started to work and she is 40. the older the better for police work. my husband is a sergeant and SWAT

About the first thing he said... you do not have to be 21. In some states, yes, but it depends on the department. For example, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade PD allow you to be a cop at 19, one of a fee depts in FL. In my state, you can be a part time cop at 18/19, and full time at 20/21. In Pittsburgh, PA, you can be a cop at 18. You just have to have the proper credentials, such as a certain amount of college credits or graduate from a police academy and be certified (which you can do at 18)
Im still in middle school and I've never really considered being a cop but now i looked more into it i do I want to work as a homicide detective but I need to be a officer first
Cal You have to have a college degree and as of right now a minimum of 3 years of work experience but they like more. Try to learn a language, study law, become an officer or join the military. There are other paths of course but just some tips! Also dont rely on the fbi as a career because it’s not guaranteed, establish another career and be good at it. Good luck!
I'm determined. Yes, we all make mistakes. Some of which I honestly forgot. But I need help with a question. I already graduated college, but for audio engineering and now in student loan debt. But I want to go to a different college for criminal justice, maybe for 2 years. I've attempted the ASVAB twice without study (I suck at math without a calculator and being timed). Am I doing something wrong in wanting to be a cop? and is criminal justice the way to go? It's 2017, and I need answers. Sorry to be so demanding, but to me? it's determination!
God's Son those are great questions and we do not have the answer for them since we don't specialize in that field. What we suggest is going to our local police department and ask those very important questions to a seasoned police officer. Thank you for checking out questions and having the drive to make a difference!
Thank you for the reply. I shall do so sir/ma'am. I consider myself to being 79% of the way toward pursuing a career as a police officer as of this reply. What will be a part of that percentage is going to the actual police department in my area. With that being said, I've already spoken to many police officers at my current job. They tell me to go to school, some say that the department desperately needs employees, etc. I work with customers on a daily, so I see many people who are genuine, many people who have had a bad day, and in between (some very stressful situations with theft as well). I understand that not many departments require a criminal justice degree (but to most, it's considered a bonus so-to-speak). That's my only gripe; I just don't want to be placed in a situation where I am unable to provide for a future family and just live peacefully. Again, I will contact my local police department; and children, that doesn't mean for you to call 9-11. Thank you for all that you do.
God's Son I have done enough research. I have talked to 4 to 5 different police officers and went on a ride along with them. All of them said to DO NOT get a degree in law enforcement or criminal justice because being a cop is not for everyone. If being a cop doesn’t work out for you, you should have a different degree than law enforcement or criminal justice to fall back on and pursue another career. Just putting my two cents out there.
are you doing something wrong? Ahh weellll not that we are aware of YET. (well apart from the obvious like wanting to join a gang of thieves) but it seems like just a matter of time ...
This is useful for me to know and I’m very determined to become a police officer or sheriffs deputy in the future. I don’t have any life experience yet and that’s why I’m going into the Navy to learn things and see the world. Hopefully, I do work towards a bachelor while I’m in the Navy.
We dont know if that incident will be enough to turn you down for the job. What we can say, make sure to be absolutely honest about that situation when you are asked if you ever been in trouble in the past. Make sure to align your life with your goal to be a police officer and stay out of trouble. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and talk to a few seasoned police officers now and really get a inside look on what it takes. This isn't a guaranteed way but it will certainly give the knowledge you need to make an informative and give you a little bit of a leg up on the "competition"..... Good luck on your endeavors! I passed the interview in the early 90's. Could not get passed the "Farnsworth" color vision test. They sent me back to redo the test twice. I could not see the numbers. I did not cheat. Therefore i was disqualified for for good reason.
please reply. I'm 19 years old in college, I have been doing well and have struggled alot. My heart wants to be a police officer, and I'm willing to put everything on the line to be an officer. I wanted to know what I'm able to do in college to get those qualities to become an officer, because I'm in a leadership program helping out communities. I want to take classes in college to be ready to become a officer, and I'm definitely ready to put in 18 month of training in the academy. I'm just wondering if I have that chance, because hearing it as 1 out 1000 get chosen just broke my heart right now. I won't give up, I want to work hard and wear that badge with honer. my only fear is if i put so much effort and fail. but my mindset is not a fixed mindset, it's a growth mindset. I'm willing to put everything on the line.
juan martin we think you shouldn't be afraid to fail.... even when we fail we learn a lesson that makes us stronger, better wiser for the next task at hand. As far as what you need to do, check out the LAPD requirement website here, www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications We think it very important to research the job of police officer, even spending some time with a lot officers and asking them questions... real life, real world experiences... You may even want to see if there's a Vader program for your age group. As far as the 1 out of 1000 in the LA county, you have to understand that there are 88 cities in the county and so they all have a branch of officers and police departments. Question: I’m 19 and I just finished my first year in college, I didn’t do that well, as I failed some classes , and going to college was a mistake for me. However now, I’m interested in becoming a CHP and I plan on joining their explores program. I am worried my past mistakes in college will halt me. I’ve never done drugs, or got into any trouble.Feedback would be greatly appreciated!
DepPewTee We just interviewed Sergeant Jack Richter for his expertise and so we have no idea if this will affect your chances. What we can say is to listen to this video and heed its warning. Be completely honest about your college experience and explain why you didn’t do well and the reason why it will not affect your “commitment issues” when you get into the position to explain yourself. This is the best advice we can give. Please like this video and subscribe to our channel! Good luck on your career path as CHP
I made a tornado siren sound at lunch in 6th grade and got closed lunch for a week. Will I get rejected for this? This is a serious question not a joke
Ben Ghazi in all honesty, something like that should not affect your chances to become a police officer. Understand it is still important to disclose that information to your recruiter. The most important part of the recruiting process and is judging your character and your honesty ... Thank you for taking the time to watch our video with Sergeant Richter. Please be sure to watch his entire interview with us and subscribe to our channel! Good luck on all your endeavors to becoming a police officer!
thank you for sharing this video i m 40 years old now i alway wanted to a police officer but because i m a menonitie my mom had a differnt plan for me but i always wonder what if i would of made it thank you
I actually really want to be a police officer, even in Chicago. Even if not there, somewhere I can help the community. This job isn’t like any other job, it challenges you day after day while still teaching you life lessons. You can experience different situations every day, even making someone’s day. I am honestly a very athletic person and at 15 years old have never gotten a detention or referral at any of my schools. The only thing that concerns me is my small size, so seeing small, female cops gives me hope. Wish me luck out there! 👮🏻♀️
i want to help people so bad,but i was arrested for running away and i just pray i dont forget to let them know what bad things i have done or whatever. even the ratio is low i believe i can do it. i will become a police officer. not for the benifits but for helping people. i want a job thats thrilling but benifits me and others.i feel being a police officer is for me.
Colonel Windu don't be afraid to write those thing down on a piece of paper as you get ready to travel down this journey. We are glad that you want to help people because this is why this company was created. We want to provide the knowledge from the professional to inspire the world. Stay diligent, stay focus, and align your life with your goals. Everything you do should be towards your ultimate goal to be a police officer! Cheeki Breeki Slav you’re not getting hired. If not for being arrested, for running away and racking on that charge. Start looking into other fields, good luck
I'm a senior in High School and I do an internship with the Sheriff's Department! I want to become a Deputy or State Trooper in Michigan, or possibly move to the Los Angeles Area / San Diego Area to become a police officer or deputy.
it’s my dream job to become a cop ever since i was a little kid , two years ago i got expelled from high school and i moved to another school. will this turn me down and force me to look into another career?
G35xvBeto We have no clue if this will affect you in your future career. The best advice we can give you is to be completely honest with your recruiter when you do decided to apply for the job. The rest of the decision is on the police department you apply to if you qualify overall.
That is an excellent question. We think you should really be honest about why that job didn't work for you enough to quit the job with no notice. Once you can be honest with answer to that question, then, you have to decide if that answer is really that damaging or was it a silly mistake. We definitely encourage you to talk to the local police department that you plan to apply for and when and if you do get into interview process. Be completely honest about what they ask you.
I’m currently in college with a 3.7 GPA about to get my Associates and transfer but at 24 years old it seems like a long shot that I’ll ever get to work at the federal level. I’m contemplating becoming an LEO at the local level but can’t decide. I feel like it would be a better fit for me but I also don’t want to give up on what I’ve been working so hard towards
@@MariiJJk wow this comment seems like it was from a past life. Covid really did a number on my outlook/plan. Ended up graduating in 2020 but never did transfer to a university. I ended up using the money I got from unemployment to start a business, I currently run a marketing agency (lead generation) and am working with an AI startup. The bot can do things like lead generation, appointment setting, customer service etc. I also have an e-commerce deal with Amazon. Sometimes I think back and wish I would’ve just powered through and continued on this course (entrepreneurship is hard) but I’ve learned a lot and met some amazing people along the way, and I think I’m making a fair bit more than I would’ve in Law Enforcement lol. But, law enforcement wasn’t about the money. I have always felt like something was calling out to me and I was using law enforcement as a vessel to answer that call, but life works in mysterious ways and as it turns out, that calling and sense of purpose has been met by running my own successful businesses. Thanks for reaching out, seeing old posts really keeps me grounded and serve as a reminder of my growth as an individual. Much appreciated.. Edit: I’ll be 30 next month
I watch this. Because I want to be a police officer, my understanding the process is too long. But if that's what you want to be. You can do it! Give it a try you will never know what you can do until you try it!🌺
Gudon Hassan absolutely! Go for your dreams and believe in yourself and your abilities. Thank you for taking the time out to watch this video interview. Please like and share this video and subscribe to our channel!
Every police department and state have different rules, regulations and procedures for their hiring process. This video is based on LAPD and their hiring process.
Hi, I want to become a police officer for a long time now. But I was born in Germany, finished a college degree here, but do not want to work in any of my studies fields. So if I do not get a green card, how can I apply and being taken by the police? Do they give you a sponor visa? If yes, how do I obtain that? Looking forward to a reply. Thanks
Thank you for taking the time to watch our video with Sergeant Richter. All departments are different but in order to apply for a job at the police department in Los Angeles. @@Hockey567899 no. I went in and back out cus I realized I can, in no way, work for the state, nor arrest people for non-crimes and rules I don't believe in. I cannot just tell myself 'I'm following orders'. I can not agree to be a storm trooper. I can not agree to entrap people or break any oath to the Constitution. I can not agree to be paid to protect the existence of insurance companies nor hunt people down for traffic violations. I do not think modern policing is appropriate nor effective.
@@Hockey567899 yeh man... It was the best choice not to do something. And now I won't get charged with racial discrimination, if a suspect dies while shooting at me or fighting with me, or ambushing me. I don't have to inject myself into some bullshit, which was caused by retarded laws.
I use to work as a correctional officer in florida, but I was fired due to some bad coworkers I worked side by side with. Now Im 26 with my own business. Now if I ever go back into law enforcement, I would be losing money. If I ever go back into law enforcement, i would go with fish and wildlife
I grew up with the police in my life a lot. And as time went on I realized I would want to help others like they helped me with my problems at home and making the community a little better. But sometimes I think I’m not brave enough like these people and would like to know how. I live in the City of LA and want to join the LAPD. What’s a good college major to stand behind if you want to go federal or just a cop in general?
I want to be a police officer. It has been my dream since I was younger. I hope to achieve that dream. I am a junior in high school and I plan on going to college for an associates degree in Criminal Justice than enter the police academy.
Maggie Simmons go for your bachelors. keep in mind that meeting the minimum requirements will never get you a police job. work and volunteer with departments, get your degree. military combined with a bachelors is extremely valuable, enough to where a department might overlook that time you smoked weed in high school.
Try applying for the explorers program if you're young enough (14 - 21), it'll give you 10 recommendation points and if you're bilingual that's another 10 points.
@@Briana_Wileman It's an amazing opportunity for high school students, my local department offers 122 hours of basic law enforcement training; I'm currently on week 10 (every Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm for me). We learned arrest techniques, traffic laws, radio skills, and a ton more. If you're really sure that you want to do this, I highly suggest doing it right away; I wish that I've done it earlier (I am 17 right now). Be advised, it is paramilitary so they will yell at you and discipline you if they have to -- but my department doesn't yell at us much anymore unless we scew up.
I would love to be a cop!!!!! I cant wait! Unfortunately I made the mistake of driving buzzed, but I didn’t hit anyone so I’m on probation for 2 more years! In the mean time, I’ll be volunteering at my local police department.
Mary B good luck I. Whatever you choose to do! As Sergeant Richter said, always be honest about your background, if you do decide to apply to be a police officer. Thank you for taking the time to watch our video with Sergeant Richter! Please watch his entire interview with us. Also, please like this video and subscribe to our channel! Again, good luck!
technically you could still be hired. but unfortunately you dont stand a chance against a pool of other more qualified applicants with much cleaner backgrounds.
Been thinking about trying to be a cop for the past couple years. More so now because I'm 21. I only have an associate's degree and my only work experience is in customer service/retail. But I've got all A's on my degree, no tickets or accidents on my driving record, never been in trouble at school or with the law. Never smoked any substance, no drugs, never been drunk, never been fired or had any problems with authority, I work hard no matter what I'm paid, I exercise at least 30 minutes everyday.... I tried to join the navy but was medically DQ'ed. I want a job that will keep me busy and physically active. I still don't know if I'd pass the application process though...
Okay. I currently am 16 years old and i am from Greece. I would love to live in the US, become a US citizen and become a police officer. How many years this procces will take to complete if i get to the us by the age of 19? And last but no least , do i even have any chances of accomplishing this dream ?
Savrawars We are not exactly sure how long the process will take for you to finalize your citizenship but as far as applying for the LAPD, you can be in the process of getting your citizenship and once you are hired you have to complete your citizenship with in three years after your academy graduation. As far as your odds, like Sergeant Richter said, it's 1 out of a 1000 applicants but we think it would be a shame for you not to at least try and pursue something you feel strongly about! One thing is for certain, if you don't try you are guarantee to never have a chance at! Here's is the link to the LAPD website for qualifications www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications Also please watch Sergeant Richter's full interview here, bit.do/LAPD-Sergeant-Jack-Richter
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE!!!One final thing. Is it hard to become a permanent resident in the US if you dont have a university degree for example or a higher education level? I mean, right now i speak 3 different languages Greek,Russian and English. The next year i will be in the final year of high school and if i want i would be able to go to university. However i want to know if its going to be easy for me to be able to live in the US without a university degree. I am also considering joinning the US ARMY. I know you probably dont have the answers for these questions but any feedback would be appreciated!!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!!!
Savrawars those are good questions! We wish we could help you more and give you more information but we aren't very fluent in those backgrounds and what it takes for work/school visas ...
4 year degree at a US university should get you a green card, makes you 23, depending on the agency; US citizenship may be required (eg All of Texas) that makes you 28, 20 years service makes you 48 so pretty easy in theory
noahbagel If you aren't 100% sure, don't do it. Also, major in something else besides CJ unless it's your true passion. Having a degree definitely helps, especially at departments that can afford to pay. I have two AS degrees and a BS in CJ and speak a second language. I don't make much, but you cannot pursue this career for the money.
Letuz we all make mistakes when were younger. We are not in charge nor do we know if your past will prevent your from being hired. However, like Sergeant Richter says, be sure to be completely honest about your past and continue to align your life and goals NOW with your goal to be a police officer! Good luck and please don’t forget to like, share and subscribe to our channel!
There’s a few departments around me where I can join at 18 I’m 19 and going to school and getting an associates in criminal justice and then hopefully going into the police academy and pursue my career
Me, the speeding is good too. I grew up on TV westerns so I'm always down for a gunfight on the main street; Gary Cooper rocks (Satire & Sarcasm) So much paperwork so little time
We don't know if it's enough to get rejected but it is very important to be upfront to your recruiter about everything since this a test to your moral fiber!

I'm interested in being a detective, to my knowledge you need a certain amount of time as an officer, and need to meet certain requirements, this has been a dream of mine, since a lot of my family have been officers, (I'm 16 by the way ). Thanks and any info will help .
Once a cop, remember it never leaves you. Even when you retire you will never shake habits of being a police officer. Still to this date, I only trust police. Most other people will not gain my trust.
I have to go to the Fitness testing in a couple days and I’m actually starting to rethink it. I’m starting to get nervous. I’m not sure if I’m built for it. Just seems too dangerous.
i live in the uk and i thought of moving to the us later in life, and i read on the internet that you have to be a citizen to become a police officer. is that not true then? or which states dont require you to be? im just thinking of this career i dont know yet so im just kind of finding stuff out..

adel the best advice we can give you is to really go out and talk to different officers and get real world advice from them. They would be able to give you a better understand on what you should or shouldn't take for the job.
I’m sorry for replying 3 years later but right now I’m 14 and a person who highly wants to become a cop and would be committed to it. I was just wondering if this applies to Australia as well and every country.
This just applies to Los Angeles Police Department in California in the United States. My dad Says I won't get a good job because I got one F in Math. Is it possible for me to be a police officer if I'm bad at math. And I'm only 13, so I got lots to learn still
Shadow Lurker the proxy we would suggest you still Chas those dreams. You have so much schooling to go to prove your self, prove your work ethic, and your character. If being a cop is really what you want to do, start aligning your life now with that goal. Talk to different cops in your area to get real world experienced answers, start getting into the best shape now, maybe even check to see if you have a police cadet program in your area. I'm 33 and in great phsyical shape with a clean background. I wanted to know if my chances are good against maybe the younger applicants? Also if I know a few people from the department in which I'm applying, would that help my chances?
Angelo P. Just remember that this are the standard of the LAPD in LA County. It is very feasible that your local police department in the area you wanna sign up for doesn’t have these types of requirements. It would be very wise to speak to our local police department or even a police officer about the requirement to become a officer! Thank you for spending the time to watch our interview. Please be sure to like and share this video and subscribe to our channel!
Correct... Like Sergeant Richter said... you don't have to be 21 to enter into the police academy but you have to be 21 by the time you graduate. Good luck in your endeavors!
man, most of the people apply to law agencies 'cause they wanna get money and live as life-king, but when they get appointed to the academy they just realize that there's no the easiest way to earn money for nothing. You think like 'oh you just go 'round the hood and do tickets', though it's not really what it's like. Some of them don't even know how many cops die per year, which is horrible. SO, if you feel that it's your's -- grab'n'go.
ryanle 13 we would say check out google for those answers. On a brief search, it's doesn't seem to be a big issues. Let us know what you come with after doing some research! Thank you for your question about needed glasses. Please take the time out to like, share and subscribe to our channel!
i am from chicago, suburb for h.s....no one pegged me for being a cop...as i left for florida when i was 22 and , everyone goes their separate ways after h.s. i did 26 yrs and loved every minutes of it with a nationally known agency and sheriff.
Freya_minecraft freya that's awesome! Sounds like you have found your passion and we hope that you get to achieve that goal! Thank for taking the time out to watch our videos. Dalton we don’t know if they will benefit you or not since we only interview Sergeant Richter and are not familiar with those kinds of qualifications. We do suggest you talk to your local police department and ask questions like this or any other questions of concern. That way you hear it from the people who are actually in the field. This our model! Hearing the real information from the professions that do it! Thank you for taking the time to watch our video and please like this video and subscribe to our channel.
Hypothetically if someone attempted to steal something from Walmart and got caught but the store didn’t call the cops instead made you fill out some paperwork would that be something to present to the application
That’s a very good question! It is absolutely something you bring up on the application because it’s not necessarily about the action of what somebody did but rather their character now. Being truthful is always the best option when applying for these types of jobs. Good luck
I been told I had to go to collage to become a cop now I ask again and told me I don't need any degree exactly. So in my view is it like the military.? The civil service exam like an Asvab and then we go to a place were we gonna get check like meps and then the training.? Or must i pay for the training.?
emileo agustin to be absolutely sure, it is best that you Check with your local police department hiring standards. Not every department has the same standards and some may require you to pay for academy and some might not. That also goes for the requires needed to go through the process to the academy.
*So I'm planning on joining the 11Bravos or Marines, but if I was to make it back in one piece would it be some what easier to become a Police officer? Thinking LAPD.*
Faith M we don’t know but we are glad that you are seeing it now! Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos, please be sure to like, share and subscribe to our channel!
Well, I have 21 years on the job, in busy city, Im 42. A few things
7. Were human too, you will make mistakes, just alway put officer safety#1
Oh yea one more thing, if you can go Federal, better pay, benefits and you an travel a lot.
fit4ya1975 we appreciate your input as a officer yourself. Any experienced information is welcome!

Chris I have the same question chris
I’m in high school currently. My father is a police officer and I have always wanted to help others. I think this is the job for me!

A Wise Way ok
Chopper Continue to follow those dreams ... make a conscious effort to align your life with that goal ...
One to a thousand... Ive seen some outa shape cops..
I wanna be a cop but i like smoking weed too much could i still be a cop?
SkullCandy4everyone nope, they get a lot of random drug tests
Im gonna smoke for like a year then quit then join quit my habbit
It's not about physical fitness it's about good judgement and being a good foot soldier. Follow orders, apply common sense, don't embarrass the department too often
SkullCandy4everyone This is for LA only. Most departments are way more than this
You should know: You won't be home for holidays, barbecues, your kids birthday party's.You should know- though you will save life, take life and perhaps give your own,you cannot control this. You should know you will sit in a crowded room and feel alone-we do not have the luxury of sheep. You should know as a police officer you're closer to jail than you've ever been.Finally-be safe, let your instincts prevail..watch people's hands, eyes and words cannot hurt you.Stay tactical, stay alert and stay alive.God Bless.
it's a single man's gig, if you don't have family, then you can make bank working OT
John N. That's if your department can afford to pay OT. We're not allowed to go over a certain number of hours.
niagra898 What do you mean closer to jail?
sounds perfect for me. I already don't go to family gatherings and enjoy alone time. Maybe this is the job for me
niagra898 sign me up
application for LAPD is 27 pages long, you need five good references, and they check out everything you say
thats how most big departments are
My guess is you are a county mountie, God bless the constitutional sheriffs
application for AuroraPD was 3 pages long, I didn't need a reference, and they got back to me within a day.
I guess not a lot of people are applying. I have my entrance test in a week, wish me luck!
What do you mean by 27 page? 27 pages of writing?
ChaotiX how did you do?
It's good that supervisors and recruiters are really honest about the process. Straight forward
David FOX we agree! It's refreshing to get this information it to the world and what the process is like. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to not o my watch our videos but comment on them

This guy is full of shit...…...it is the best job in the world except maybe a fire fighter.....this putz is doing what a lot of cops do and try to elicit praise and sympathy and even maybe get a little poor me hero worship thrown upon themselves......and if he really found the job this difficult then he is weak and a lightweight and should never have been a cop...
relax bro, go make some arrests my guy lmfao
Thank you for sharing
I'm still in high school and my dream is to be a police officer in Minnesota or North Dakota.
Dylan I heard there is alot of politics in the pds in rural places
another dumb high school jock. lets see you go and harras innocent grown
men your own size or bigger while your not a cop and see what happens
wimp!
modernwarfare657 There is but that's Western ND. I don't plan going way out there. I'm sure there are politics in bigger departments also.
I'm 6'5" and 265lbs.
Sandymcsandburger arent we all defending Dylan ? my comment was a respond to that guy calling highschool jock
Would you say it is more beneficial to go into the military to better yourself before applying?
Gabba Shanking No, it's a completely different occupation. IT will help like going to college would help, but it's more LIFE EXPERIENCE that they look for ie community involvement, volunteer work, ability to communicate with different personalities, which would pertain more to being a cop than going in fire fights and living in tents in a desert.
kk thanks
I will go through academy before my 30. My friend just started to work and she is 40. the older the better for police work. my husband is a sergeant and SWAT

About the first thing he said... you do not have to be 21. In some states, yes, but it depends on the department. For example, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade PD allow you to be a cop at 19, one of a fee depts in FL. In my state, you can be a part time cop at 18/19, and full time at 20/21. In Pittsburgh, PA, you can be a cop at 18. You just have to have the proper credentials, such as a certain amount of college credits or graduate from a police academy and be certified (which you can do at 18)
Thanks Jack, great video. Never done the FTO gig and I am so happy, thanks for your service; especially with the rookies
Im still in middle school and I've never really considered being a cop but now i looked more into it i do I want to work as a homicide detective but I need to be a officer first
BandKidM _0 I’m in mid school and I’m thinking of going into the FBI later, but goodluck!
Damn you young asf, you will prolly change your career many times don’t worry
Cal You have to have a college degree and as of right now a minimum of 3 years of work experience but they like more. Try to learn a language, study law, become an officer or join the military. There are other paths of course but just some tips! Also dont rely on the fbi as a career because it’s not guaranteed, establish another career and be good at it. Good luck!
I am 19 years old and I am going to college for Criminal Justice then I am going to the police academy
ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to be a detective or work in a police force and I’m looking I to it and this is very useful thank you 😊
the angry potato you are very welcome! We are glad that we could help by interview Sergeant Richter of the LAPD
You don't need a degree in law enforcement to become a police officer. You just need a high school diploma.
I’m 13 years old and when I grow up I want to be a police officer or cop
Bruh
Ber lin me too man me too
I wanna be a cop as well, i wish you luck and don’t forget to exercise! Remember be the change you want to see in the world :D
Me too! Happy 15th birthday now i guess. I hope you achieve your goal!
U still want to be a cop?
Subscribed! I enjoyed every second of this video. Thank you !!
This is useful for me to know and I’m very determined to become a police officer or sheriffs deputy in the future. I don’t have any life experience yet and that’s why I’m going into the Navy to learn things and see the world. Hopefully, I do work towards a bachelor while I’m in the Navy.
If I got in trouble in middle school will they turn me down?
We dont know if that incident will be enough to turn you down for the job. What we can say, make sure to be absolutely honest about that situation when you are asked if you ever been in trouble in the past. Make sure to align your life with your goal to be a police officer and stay out of trouble. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and talk to a few seasoned police officers now and really get a inside look on what it takes. This isn't a guaranteed way but it will certainly give the knowledge you need to make an informative and give you a little bit of a leg up on the "competition".....
Good luck on your endeavors!

Yes
As far as what you need to do, check out the LAPD requirement website here, www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications
We think it very important to research the job of police officer, even spending some time with a lot officers and asking them questions... real life, real world experiences... You may even want to see if there's a Vader program for your age group.
As far as the 1 out of 1000 in the LA county, you have to understand that there are 88 cities in the county and so they all have a branch of officers and police departments.
Finally, please like this video and subscribe to our channel and watch the full interview of Sergeant Richter here, bit.do/LAPD-Sergeant-Jack-Richter
juan martin same my dream is to become police officer and make my parents proud
the 1 to 1000 is mostly in big departments avrage ones are like 1 to 40
You protect and serve the public not just for lights this is a really serious job.
Very informational. One the best police hiring informative videos out there.

Thanks for the Information found it really helpful
Kenneth Bartholomew nice

Appreciate the advice!
it’s my dream job to become a cop ever since i was a little kid , two years ago i got expelled from high school and i moved to another school. will this turn me down and force me to look into another career?
G35xvBeto We have no clue if this will affect you in your future career. The best advice we can give you is to be completely honest with your recruiter when you do decided to apply for the job. The rest of the decision is on the police department you apply to if you qualify overall.
I'd love to be an officee I'd love to protect and serve the community in many many ways
Can I still get hired if I quit my job without giving a 2 week notice? I’ve never really committed any crime, just that.
I’m still in high school, senior year, I’m thinking about becoming a police officer after the military. This gave me good information, thank you!

Hey, it's been about 5 years, how is everything so far? What do you do now? Did you reach your goal?
I was told police academy here in fort Pierce florida they don't pay you in thier 6 month program.
Every police department and state have different rules, regulations and procedures for their hiring process. This video is based on LAPD and their hiring process.
Gotchya it's odd that they don't if it's true how does one survive 6 months of full time training without starving becoming homeless ect.
You have to be in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States.

Thank you! I'm going to pursue this career.

did you make it?
@@Hockey567899 no. I went in and back out cus I realized I can, in no way, work for the state, nor arrest people for non-crimes and rules I don't believe in. I cannot just tell myself 'I'm following orders'. I can not agree to be a storm trooper. I can not agree to entrap people or break any oath to the Constitution. I can not agree to be paid to protect the existence of insurance companies nor hunt people down for traffic violations. I do not think modern policing is appropriate nor effective.
@@Leman.Russ.6thLegion oh wow I see
@@Hockey567899 yeh man...
Miguel Robb what’s ur business
What's it business
I grew up with the police in my life a lot. And as time went on I realized I would want to help others like they helped me with my problems at home and making the community a little better. But sometimes I think I’m not brave enough like these people and would like to know how. I live in the City of LA and want to join the LAPD. What’s a good college major to stand behind if you want to go federal or just a cop in general?
I want to be a police officer. It has been my dream since I was younger. I hope to achieve that dream. I am a junior in high school and I plan on going to college for an associates degree in Criminal Justice than enter the police academy.
Maggie Simmons awesome! Continue to align your life with your dreams!
@@PrinceJes I'm 15 and I would like to become a police officer when I'm older, but could you explain the explorers program please?
@@Briana_Wileman
It's an amazing opportunity for high school students, my local department offers 122 hours of basic law enforcement training; I'm currently on week 10 (every Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm for me).
What if ive been accused but the prosecutor delcined it? Never was charged or in handcuffs just interrogated

Again, good luck!
How did you show an interest in volunteering. What kind of work do you do while volunteering? :)
HAHAHAHAH, you’re never getting hired with a DWI, anywhere. Unless you know some high ranking corrupt politician
Flanker 07 Not true at all. It varies case by case and many have been.
technically you could still be hired. but unfortunately you dont stand a chance against a pool of other more qualified applicants with much cleaner backgrounds.
Thanks for the cop or the police information or tips Thank you alot. I like this information!!!
Different states, require different ages for you to go in the police force. In Ohio, you have to be 21. Florida you have to be 19, and so on.
Here's is the link to the LAPD website for qualifications www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications

Very inspiring. I'm 96% sure that I want to pursue a career in law enforcement after college, and major in criminal justice, or something related
whas the 4%
noahbagel If you aren't 100% sure, don't do it. Also, major in something else besides CJ unless it's your true passion. Having a degree definitely helps, especially at departments that can afford to pay. I have two AS degrees and a BS in CJ and speak a second language. I don't make much, but you cannot pursue this career for the money.
@@ericbanasiak2952 🧢 more experience the more money you’re getting to
If someone pressed charges at you when you were 14 would that affect if you got the job or not, my dream is to be a cop so I need answers please.
There’s a few departments around me where I can join at 18 I’m 19 and going to school and getting an associates in criminal justice and then hopefully going into the police academy and pursue my career
who wants to become a police officer because police lights looks good?
Me, the speeding is good too. I grew up on TV westerns so I'm always down for a gunfight on the main street; Gary Cooper rocks (Satire & Sarcasm) So much paperwork so little time
If that's why you want to be a cop.. Your looking at the wrong career..
LCodGaming X It will become second nature after a few months, don't be a cop for that
Omg this is so me lol
LCodGaming X I want to be a police officer to save more lives.
Scary. Should I face my fears and join?
are traffic tickets enough for you to be rejected on the background check but they are paid

Oh that sounds better than being a cop! Good luck!
I want to be a police officer and doctor so i honestly dont know which on to do since their both so interesting
I wanna be an officer for South Carolina.
I am contemplating weather to get an associates degree in criminal justice before joining or after I get the job. I can't decide
Only become a police officer if you have a good character.
That outro beat was sounding nice
Edgar Phillips thank you .. it was made by one of our in house music producers
Once a cop, remember it never leaves you. Even when you retire you will never shake habits of being a police officer. Still to this date, I only trust police. Most other people will not gain my trust.
So you're a retired cop ? But do you trust your family ?
Lol 😂 you must be doing the drugs u bust people with I only trust other cops lol 😂 like cops don’t lie cheat steal murder
I have to go to the Fitness testing in a couple days and I’m actually starting to rethink it. I’m starting to get nervous. I’m not sure if I’m built for it. Just seems too dangerous.
i live in the uk and i thought of moving to the us later in life, and i read on the internet that you have to be a citizen to become a police officer. is that not true then? or which states dont require you to be? im just thinking of this career i dont know yet so im just kind of finding stuff out..
adel Great question! You can be in the process of becoming a citizen while applying/ going through academy if accepted. Here's a link to the LAPD requirement page but keep in mind this may not be the requirements for all police departments. www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications

oh okay thank you so much for answering. :) one more question, what degree do you think is helpful to take?
adel the best advice we can give you is to really go out and talk to different officers and get real world advice from them. They would be able to give you a better understand on what you should or shouldn't take for the job.
adel you have to be a citizen
I’m sorry for replying 3 years later but right now I’m 14 and a person who highly wants to become a cop and would be committed to it. I was just wondering if this applies to Australia as well and every country.
This just applies to Los Angeles Police Department in California in the United States. Every police department and their requirements are different and so it is wise to contact your local police department or the police department you would like to apply for ask for their specific guidelines on their hiring process.
Thank you for taking the time to watch our video with Sergeant Richter. Please be sure to watch his entire interview with us and don't forget to like this video and subscribe to our channel
1:1000? Damn, I have never heard of that few getting in
Domenic Morello LA County has 88 cities and so you have a lot of applications from all those cities.
Oh ok I see
Wonder if I'll make it if I'm a bit hesitant. I'm kinda scared for some reason. I'll look into it more.
My dad Says I won't get a good job because I got one F in Math. Is it possible for me to be a police officer if I'm bad at math. And I'm only 13, so I got lots to learn still
and all my other grades are real good
Shadow Lurker the proxy we would suggest you still Chas those dreams.
Every part of your life should reflect your goals to being a police officer.

You have enough time haha
I'm 33 and in great phsyical shape with a clean background. I wanted to know if my chances are good against maybe the younger applicants? Also if I know a few people from the department in which I'm applying, would that help my chances?
Few are choosen. Few survives
Dumbass not true
I am in the process.
My question is: how do I transition myself not feeling as a civilian although I am a cop?
Cops are civilians,they just forgot.
Sounds so hard.
I'm just here trying to choose between being police office or a firefighter???😥😥
You have to be at least 21 to be a cop?
Correct... Like Sergeant Richter said... you don't have to be 21 to enter into the police academy but you have to be 21 by the time you graduate. Good luck in your endeavors!
A Wise Way Thank you mister!
You have to be at least 21 to be a police officer not a cop.
They're the exact same thing
What is the exact same thing.
Thank u
This sounds impossible. Lol
EPSGplayer it's sounds that way but you have consider how many people apply for LAPD in the city's in the entire LA county ...
man, most of the people apply to law agencies 'cause they wanna get money and live as life-king, but when they get appointed to the academy they just realize that there's no the easiest way to earn money for nothing. You think like 'oh you just go 'round the hood and do tickets', though it's not really what it's like. Some of them don't even know how many cops die per year, which is horrible. SO, if you feel that it's your's -- grab'n'go.
Three career options In my head...Police Officer, EMT, or a military branch(marines or army)
Can you wear glasses to become a police officer

i am from chicago, suburb for h.s....no one pegged me for being a cop...as i left for florida when i was 22 and , everyone goes their separate ways after h.s. i did 26 yrs and loved every minutes of it with a nationally known agency and sheriff.

How did it go?
Should I go to the army first and then join sheriffs?
