From ridge racer, Tekken, battle arena Toshinden, warhawk, Resident Evil, air combat, just the variety of games back in those days was amazing! @@lasarousi N64 did not have anywhere near as many games as the Playstation and then there was the issue that it could not have voice dialog like the disks of the Playstation.
@@lasarousi you’re comparing a 2nd gen console to a 5th gen console. OP was talking going from one generation (Snes) to the gen that immediately followed (PlayStation).
Sony PlayStation did so well out of the gate because it was different. Different enough to make people take notice of it as not being another Sega or Nintendo system. They went for a more mature focus of those who grew up on the NES and Genesis were at a point in their lives for something more... bold. And it worked. I myself was not swayed by the marketing like i know others were, i grew up on the 2600 so by the 90's I was an adult and being that I liked all types of games... that meant i also liked all types of game systems. So naturally i got a PS1 right after i picked up the Saturn. And supporting both was rather costly but worth it for me. Started off with Ridge Racer, Philosoma and Tekken.
They put out more games older people would play compared to the rest. They were still making games for kids more than older teens and adults who had been playing games for years already.
It was worth the wait. Excellent episode! A fun trip back down memory lane - didn't get a PS1 until a couple years later, but I remember all the hype and reading the gaming magazine and playing with friends.
Was it though? I think yes! But honestly, I just looked and it's been *nine* months since his last video so I wonder what happened that took him out for so long.
CGQ takes us back to when we didn’t have to worry about what was going on in the world. We played the latest in video games, read the latest comics, arcades were still going strong, and saw the latest movies in the theater. I appreciate keeping politics out. Even if it’s something I agree with, we all need a break.
We were kids and teens back then so we didn't notice or care about the politics, and politics hadn't infested into popular culture (tho it was starting to i.e Bill Clinton, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Princess Diana death etc.). It was still there tho, just more an "old person" thing and not commercialized nearly to the degree it is today. Which was for the best tbh. Still tho, we even had Nick News back then but it wasn't the culture-war/extremists politics BS we have today there or in mainstream either tbh.
During the Destruction Derby segment you forgot to mention the Sega Saturn version when showing all the platforms the series appeared on. Still, this was a great video. Thanks for uploading!
You deserve so much praise on these videos you release. They capture eras of gaming in a non biased, well laid out format for the viewers to enjoy. Truly documenting gaming in the cleanest way possible. Thank you for all the hard work.

You are hands down one of the best game channels on the platform. If I owned a shop I would leave your videos on replay for ambiance. Your content is well-researched, has lots of awesome original 90/80s ads, magazine shots, and gameplay footage, and your prose and accounts are personal, honest, and not written by AI. Your speech cadence is a little repetitive, but your voice is clean, professional, and makes the overall quality of your content is just unparalleled and you have a seemingly-infinite set of material to produce for given your patient quality-over-quantity upload schedule. You and Jeremy Parish are easily the top two, followed by GamingHistorian for his creative spin on mixing game-history with filmmaking.
Back in 1995, Sony’s PlayStation already had a lot of great games. Especially Wipeout, Tekken, Rayman and the quite underrated Jumping Flash were among my favorites from the early PSX games.
bruuuh wipeout was such a trip. I mastered it at "The WIZ" that very same summer , as they had plenty of "testable" games . My uncle would drive me there at 10:00 AM and pick me up at around 6 PM. A real full time job ffs
I watch the ads alllll the way through because you deserve every bit of awesomeness due to your EXCELLENT QUALITY VIDEOS!!!! KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 1996 I got to rent an PlayStation from blockbuster and got Road Rash for the weekend. It was and still is an amazing game! Thanks for another awesome video.
Home Console Gaming wouldn't be what it is today without the Sony PlayStation. Sony are pure visionaries pure innovators imo. They always push the boundarys of what's possible. I went from the Sega Mega Drive to the mighty PlayStation way back in 1997 & i have never looked back since. I have always bought Sony products, From Walkmans to Discmans From their early Trinitron T.Vs to their Bravia T.Vs From 5.1 Home Cinema systems to Home Projectors. What i'm getting at is’ Sony = Absolute Quality.
Absolutely FANTASTIC video CGQ! Tour de force doesn't give enough praise for the work you've put into this. You struck an excellent balance with coverage per game. The little details like corner titles (in MTV music video font no less!) and box art really added so much along with the various CRT backgrounds. Great information and thoughts on a huge list of titles for the PlayStation. I broke up viewing into two parts but have no complaints! It was great to have something that drew me back for more! Destruction Derby was one of my early favorite releases back in the day. Keep up the excellent work!
I was in 8th grade when the PS1 was released. I got one one as a graduation gift. Safe to say, me and my homies stayed in all summer LOL. I had gotten 5 games the summer of 96. We had a great summer cause one of my boys got a 64 and I got one after and another homie had a Saturn. We’re all either 39 or 40 now with careers and families of our own but we still talk about the 95/96 year in gaming as one of the best times of our lives.

Hope we get to see the ps1 in another year. This was the game changer in my opinion, the greatest console ever made in terms of getting there first and its echoes still shape and the console and pc gaming world today. Just an amazing amount of creativity and freedom never had before then. It coincided with so many visionary and talented creators.
your channel truly introduced me to retro Gaming and I'm grateful for that. and I'm so happy you're back with the series. more episodes in the future hopefully.

The games I scanned over, never played & the games I immersed myself into. I’m glad I found this. You’ve garnered a new fan sir. Oh, & Sensible Soccer was a cut above the licensed soccer games during this time. I hated saying it at the time but clarity brings prosperity 😅
Chris, this is one of my favorite periods in gaming, the PS1 was the first game system that I bought with my own money, and I took so much pride and had so much enjoyment in collecting for it! Many people have a hard time understanding how, if they weren't there, these games even the subpar ones just felt like such a leap in terms of atmosphere and playability over what was possible in the previous console generation. Yes some of these games were definitely at a rating of 6 or 7 quality but they were still an enjoyable thing to experience because of what they offered that was new. This is one of your finest videos yet, awesome work man.
The '90's was truly the pinnacle of gaming greatness! SNES, Genesis, Playstation, and N64, were so much fun and had such a great variety of games! "Sigh" I miss being a kid.
Chris, you nailed this one out of the park, fantastic video! It's always worth the wait for a new CGQ or CGQ+ video, I can't imagine the work that went into this, very impressive.
What an exciting time in video games! I was a N64 kid but I always loved playing Road Rash and Ridge Racer at my friend's house back then. It wasn't until 1998 and I saw Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, and Tekken 3, that I really wanted a PlayStation. Never did get one though
I remember running across an issue of the CD-Rom magazine IE Interactive that had video previews of an import PS1 and rewatching that segment nonstop for months. Everything about the system seemed futuristic, with the controller having shapes on the buttons, ports that the hosts speculated wildly on, and a cryptic ad campaign. I was able to get a system with Ridge Racer and Tekken for Christmas, and probably gained about 10 pounds eating candy while trying to get that damn Devil car. What a great time. Excellent video, as always!
man remember the old vdeogame magazines that would come with little bonuses of circular stickers for the cdrom lid and little mini stickers for memory cards?
Watching these transports me back to my adolescence. So many of these games that were less popular, I completely forgot about and the review helps me remember just how fun they still actually were.
Good to see you here Yahel! If you liked this please consider giving the PlayStation some love in your channel! I know I'm not the only who would love to see your take on it!
Looks like my comment got wiped with the re-upload, but no biggie, this video was going to get watched more than once anyway :) Chris, I really appreciate the amount of work, time and effort that goes into making these videos; your attention to detail and pursuit of perfection is apparent and worthy of praise. In particular, the combination of the historic context before each specific title and the addition of magazine excerpts really flesh out the talking points of each, making for a holistic approach that has informed me on aspects of a title or company I didn't otherwise know about; this approach really feels like you capture these moments in time so well. Thank you for another wonderful video; this is another great addition to the 'release year' series and to a timeless body of work that is the content of this channel. Hats off and congratulations on another successful piece of work!
Yeah, sorry man. I felt bad about a few. People having their comments deleted but I had no choice as far as the reupload went. Thank you very much for the high praise!
The PS1 won the 5th gen the moment Sony went with CDs and gave a bigger cut to retailers than Nintendo was. The fact it was an incredible machine is just gravy.
There is nothing, NOTHING more nostalgia-inducing then that PSOne boot up theme. It makes me happier than the Nintendo coin chime or the “Segaaaaaa!”. The PSOne is my all time favorite console.
I remember visiting my dad one week and was gifted my ps1 back in 96. I was just shocked cause i never heard of any game companies other than nintendo and sega. Keep in mind i was 5 years old at the time and i was just blown away of how much better it was than the 64 when i played my very first playstation game, Tekken... I will never forget my introduction for as long as i live
Chris, I havent been MORE excited for a TH-cam video to pop up in a LONG TIME. This is SO great! Sorry about the MK3 music trouble. Looking forward to you covering the PS1 days on CGQ+ also!!! Please keep it up! Playstation in 1995 feels SO close to 3DO in style, games, and 'attitude.' Its funny, Sony seems like it succeeded mostly because it got a boost from 3D0's corpse (even pilfering its best games). 3DO coming out in 93' was probably the biggest cause of its demise (FMVs, high price tag, underpowered for 3D). Would we be living with the Pansonic 8DO in 2021 if Sony released the Playstation first??
Phew, it took two days to finish watching this video, but it's worth it.Well done, Chris and thanks for highlighting less known games in Playstation's early year.
This was excellent Chris! You did my favorite console of all time justice. The PS1 came out at a pivotal time in my life. My parents had moved us to a different state 2 years prior to the release of the PS1 and got rid of all our systems and games to get some extra cash for the move. I was devastated at the time but quickly moved on. Along comes 1995 and the PS1 re-ignited my fire for gaming and me and my friends bonded over so many games on that little grey box. It'll always have a special place in my heart.
I’m so happy you uploaded a new video/episode! I love your content man! The other day I watched your entire thanksgiving episode from last year on CGQ+.
Just as a funny note, the only reason Madden made no appearance that first year was that the commercials Sony ran promoting GameDay were.. selective.. in what they showed. The game looked MUCH more impressive in the commercials than it did when you actually played it, leaving EA afraid to release Madden because they thought the brand would be permanently damaged by releasing what was basically an upgraded Genesis game against what looked like a powerhouse next-gen title. Not only did EA needlessly lose money by failing to release what would have inevitably sold well, the absence of Madden made GameDay the only option and allowed it to gain a following much larger than it would have otherwise. It was by no means leaps and bounds ahead of Madden. It seems like Sony got every possible advantage when it came to the original PlayStation. Not that it needed it.
X com is one of the best games on PlayStation period ….every level is randomized this game very underrated and better than the remakes made a few years ago
Being randomized - ....are you referring to the map or some other aspects? Had no idea and am wondering if there were any other RTSs with such randomization on PS1.
Man, this console was a beast even back in 1995. Not even a year in and the playstation already had a high quality library that some consoles could only dream of having.
So i live in The Bronx and you know we have all types of people down here so...I got my ps1 from a guy who stole one from a hospital/wellness center and sold it for $100. I always played the demo that had MK3, Loaded and some porche racing game and a trailer for Symphony of the night. Ah the nostalgia. Keep up the vids man.
It's amazing how word size (# of bits) is over-hyped. I mean, faster framerate must come from faster CPU speed or video acceleration, whereas 32 bits would give you more color depth and better sound quality.
I could say so many things about this awesome effort you’ve put forth, especially touching on the early sports games of the era that I resonate with so much- but instead, I just want to thank you for this. It’s a trip back in time that I greatly appreciated taking, and you know more than most just how much the original PlayStation means to me. I enjoyed listening to your insight while watching gameplay footage that brought back a ton of memories. Thanks again.
Destruction Derby was my first PS game I played the ever loving crap out of that game. I still have it and its still that much fun. Followed that game up with Twisted Metal, great times.
Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together and share them with us. I don't think anyone can present this subject in such a mature, professional and also relaxing manner like you do. A real pleasure to listen to and a great trip down memory lane as always. I only wish you could do more magazine read throughs, as those are definitely my favorite thing to listen to on youtube.
THIS guy! Proper! Thank you for your skill set, effort, ability, drive, and generosity to share all of this and more, with anyone that is lucky enough to know your tremendous value as a producer, presenter, personality, powerhouse...and MORE. Thank you....thank you...THANK YOU! :) You are appreciated!
I remember renting a PSX with Ridge Racer and Battle Arena and really liking them. But I didn't buy a PSX until FF7 came out. I don't even remember why. I never played a FF before.
Final Fantasy 7 was the first RPG I ever played. I remember trading in some games to get another one, and I liked the cover. Looked weird and interesting. Then, later I got FF 9 when it released. Those were the days...down in the basement, experiencing epic worlds as it snowed outside. Stacking hundreds of pop cans in the corner
I truly LOVE these videos! So much relevant information presented in such a calm and collected manner... It's a rare treat to see this and I would much rather spend my evening watching 90 minutes of CGQ talking about retro games than any motion picture today. Thanks for the outstanding work, Chris!
In my eyes I have always seen the PS1 as the successor of the Super Nintendo, The color of the consoles and the controllers are quite alike, as well as the games developers
Brilliant coverage as always. One understated factor of Sony's success is the infuriating coverage by media. The propaganda in favor of their machine was out of this world. The price is 299 with no save storage and no game. Saturn bundle included builtin save memory and Virtua Fighter. Magazines rated Capcom fighters with lower scores in Saturn due to "blue shadows". The Sony machine was really brilliant but it had a favorable coverage against its competitors.
Sony had deeper pockets & presumably had favor with electronics retailers due to their history. It was certainly a good machine and had a lot of great games, but I feel like part of the reason for their success is similar to that of the XBOX, in that the parent company had the financial resources to market the hell out of it and to keep the console afloat even if it hadn't taken off as quickly. It was hardly a fair fight, given that Sega and Nintendo could never even come close to Sony's marketing budget, but that's business for you.
It was relatively cheap. The system was friendly for programmers and the CD’s were cheap to print. Combine that with Sega’s recent failures of the Sega CD and 32X with Nintendo’s cartridge system and expensive games you had the perfect storm for Sony to take advantage.
@@SpecialAgentEBunny Nintendo was also infamously difficult to work with which is what pushed Square to Sony when they stuck with cartridges for the N64.
Hey Chris, this is absolutely brilliant! I'd to know if you consider only US releases for this series, do you know of Japanese and even PAL exclusives that would make the list?
I only look at the North American releases. I think it would be cool to see a video talking about the launches of consoles in Japan or Europe, but I don’t think I’m the man for that job.
Digital Foundry covered the launch games for the PS1 in those 3 regions, I forgot to mention I was asking about future videos, in case of a 1996 focused video, etc., but I get it you cover US only, as they are far too much to cover alone, if in 1995 there were almost 50, subsequent years will easily surpass this number.
I love this series of videos, I really appreciate how much you take us back to that particular timeframe/year. I would love to see you do the same thing for additional years in each console - what was the PlayStation like in 1996, what titles came out that were notable and so on. Thanks again, love this stuff
For those wanting even more Online Twisted Metal, there's Twisted Metal Black Online for the PS2. Early purchasers of the PS2 Network Adapter could send away for an exclusive Twisted Metal Black Online version. I recall there was a delay, but we eventually were sent the discs and they came in a rectangular vertical cardboard sleeve. I got a lot of use out of my Network Adapter. Thanks a ton for making these videos and keeping politics out of it!

I was a kid when this console released, just 8 years old and it just blew me away. From ridge racer, Tekken, battle arena Toshinden, warhawk, Resident Evil, air combat, just the variety of games back in those days was amazing! I still have my PS one I bought with my own money around 97 or 98 specifically to play Metal Gear Solid, me and my friends were obsessed with that game. Thank you for this video man, brings back good memories with the boys.
Metal Gear Solid was the best of the series and truly groundbreaking. While the PC was more powerful it did not have a game like MGS.
So glad to see a new video from you! ESPECIALLY covering the PS1, and a year for a console in general!
You know it's going to be a good day when there's an upload from Classic Gaming Quarterly or CGQ+. Always love your work Chris.
Me too 100 percent.
Going from snes to ps1 was so amazing that no other new console generation felt as mind blowing ever again.
Imagine going from the Atari 2600 to the N64.
@@lasarousi
N64 did not have anywhere near as many games as the Playstation and then there was the issue that it could not have voice dialog like the disks of the Playstation.

They delivered on great games.
Agreed wholeheartedly.
Its a magical time. I prefer retro. Modern games feel stressful and unfamiliar.

Back in 1995, Sony’s PlayStation already had a lot of great games. Especially Wipeout, Tekken, Rayman and the quite underrated Jumping Flash were among my favorites from the early PSX games.
Classic uk launch selection, we ran with those games before the U. S, especially Wipeout!
bruuuh wipeout was such a trip. I mastered it at "The WIZ" that very same summer , as they had plenty of "testable" games . My uncle would drive me there at 10:00 AM and pick me up at around 6 PM. A real full time job ffs

It's just a few hours, but this is already a classic episode.

What i'm getting at is’
Sony = Absolute Quality.
A new console focused CGQ video? You just made my day, thanks!

Thanks, Pete!
The '90's was truly the pinnacle of gaming greatness! SNES, Genesis, Playstation, and N64, were so much fun and had such a great variety of games! "Sigh" I miss being a kid.
Top-notch as always! Would love a 1996 video of “forgotten” PlayStation games. 10/10
Wow dude. Freaking KILLED it. I know that this was a nightmare to edit and research. Freaking fantastic.
Good to see you here Yahel! If you liked this please consider giving the PlayStation some love in your channel! I know I'm not the only who would love to see your take on it!
Looks like my comment got wiped with the re-upload, but no biggie, this video was going to get watched more than once anyway :)
Chris, I really appreciate the amount of work, time and effort that goes into making these videos; your attention to detail and pursuit of perfection is apparent and worthy of praise.
Plus, sega eliminating themselves with the Saturn suprise launch and cancellation of a lot of games for the system.
There is nothing, NOTHING more nostalgia-inducing then that PSOne boot up theme. It makes me happier than the Nintendo coin chime or the “Segaaaaaa!”. The PSOne is my all time favorite console.

I will never forget my introduction for as long as i live

YES this is exactly what I want to watch while making late breakfast on a holiday!
Excellent video and a great, batteries-included tour of the early PlayStation library. Such a fun time to be into games.
The PS1 would have probably died like the 3DO if Nintendo hadn't foolishly stuck with cartridges.
@@58jharris No, The PS1 would have still taken Sega's place as the edgy cool console the N64 would've just been more competitive with it.
This is why i love you. No one does it better than you. Thank you so much! Quality content if there ever was one. much love, take care bro!
