Backyard Mechanic 01: Replacing Nissan Patrol Wheel Bearings

  • A basic how to on changing the wheel bearings on a Nissan Patrol. The procedure is basically the same on the GQ patrol (1988 to 1997) and the GU Patrol (1998 to current). The model this video was created with is a 1999 GU patrol, RD28 diesel.
    Note: I am not a qualified mechanic. Everything I know was learned from the service manual or by trial and error. Therefor I cannot guarantee this video to be 100% accurate (heck, I make mistakes in the video!). Use this only as a guide and refer to a service manual.

    2 suggestions if i may. 1; cut a slot in old collars with a grinder, They will then flex a bit. use slotted collars to knock new collars in. slotted collars come back out real easy 2; Put new collars in freezer for at least 2 hrs, they will shrink a bit, leave hub out in the sun if you can at same time, it makes a huge difference when fitting collars

    Sitting down having something to eat, contemplating re-packing the front wheel bearings on my 07 GU Walkabout, when I came across this video. Bloody brilliant! Love that you make no omissions on the errors (non that I could see) and reference back to the manual "just in case". Best way to know your vehicle especially if you need to do repairs out bush......... Crackin' video mate and the filming is top notch-------- keep up the good work.

    Cut a slit in the old race with a cut off wheel on a grinder and it wont get stuck when using it to drive the new outter race.

    I have found through experience with my GU Patrol that wheel bearings always suck water in past the hub seals. You need to check the bearings every 10,000k, more if you do water crossings. Patrols have strong drivetrain but tiny wheel bearings so frequent check/repack/adjust is vital. If you buy a new Patrol like I did, you need to pack wheel bearings immediately as they come ex-factory with almost no grease at all.

      @1usArmySniper 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I check mine once every 2 months as I fjord water quite regularly. Also check my front and rear diff and t-case. Thank goodness everything's sealed up tighter than a frog's a**.

    Thanks a lot for the video. Its 2 AM here, I jst reached home after puncturing two alloy rims of Nissan Patrol GQ, what happened is, while I was turning, suddenly my patrol started some strange noises, and it stoped moving, when I tried to drive, my right front tyre punctured, i got off and checked, the alloy rim was PUNCTURED from the inside where the disc hub is located, I though kay be some big screw stuck between disc hub and alloy rim, I changed it, and again it punctured my another alloy rim, now I just parked Patrol there and came home. I thought it might be broken bearing, because of which wheel is losen and when I tried to drive, disc hub punctured alloy rim, whats your opinion about it, is it wheel bearing or may be whole CV?? I am worried because its extremely hard to find Nissan Patrol GQ parts in Pakistan, because I love my patrol a lot. I dont know what to do.

    You can buy a set of race drivers on eBay for very little money, they'll make installing and removing the bearing races much easier than using timber or the old race:)

    • @Alex.G

      Maybe I'll get my hands on that for the next time I NEVER DO THIS JOB AGAIN!! Haha, but seriously that does sound like a good idea.

  • @1usArmySniper

    Why doesn't anybody break those little 6mm auto lock bolts with the wheel still on the ground? I actually changed my D21 over to manual locking hubs without removing the wheels. Granted, we're talking about replacing/packing bearing here, but for breaking the hub loose, I would leave the tire on for a BIT for some leverage until I got to the actual removal of the inner race. Just my .02

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly do break them on the ground these days. Much easier going further than that requires removing the wheel for me, just because of my rim design (no longer the vehicle in this video I should add)

    • @RideIbiza
      @RideIbiza 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ash Ride Ibiza hey sorry I found it easy in the end... but here is a question the centre lock nut was actually finger loose.. maybe coz bad installation or because its the bad bearings made it loose.. any thoughts?

    Looks like you have chopped out important bits of the movie. What sort of locking hub do you have and is it important to have it in the 'LOCK' or "AUTO' position when you pull it off?

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is the standard Nissan auto hub P Mills and you are supposed to have it in the LOCK position when you remove it. However I have put it on and off many times to try and get the locking hub apart to re-grease it and there seems to be no difference (to me) whether you have it on LOCK or AUTO to remove it.

    • @oldbloke100
      @oldbloke100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intents Offroad I've always been told to have it unlocked or you can damage they springs in the manual hub.

    • @jbrizz99
      @jbrizz99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late to the party but on the auto/lock hubs on my truck if you have them on auto the mechanism can come out of the housing, changing them to lock simply prevents this. No chance to damage the hub and if the mechanism comes out you can just put it back in by hand and lock it with a socket to keep it there. If you want to take them apart to clean out the grease a misinformed mechanic may have put in there then you have to leave them on auto.

    Why I can't remove the piece like you do in 1:55? It moves, but I can't move it out.I have already remove the external bearing. Thank you for your support.

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless your whole assembly is seized up and stuck on there which I very much doubt, you should be able to slide of off. Maybe the large inner bearing is a bit seized onto the stub axle on yours? If that's the case just pull a bit harder. Either the whole lot will slide off the stub axle, or the seal will pop out the back and you'll be left with only the inner bearing and seal to try and remove.

    • @P.J16
      @P.J16 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your support. Finally the problem was that the inner bearing was locked to the shaft and the seal bearing avoid me to extract all. I pull strong and finally the bearing and the seal is on the shaft. I will see how to extract it... thanks, anyway.

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicholas Bassaholic There is only one difference I am aware of and that is the locking nut. Rather than needing that weird two prong tool to remove it, you need a 54mm socket. It uses a locking plate which you bend the tabs over to stop the nut undoing, but you'll see what I mean.
