Secularism postures itself as a neutral body, but it’s anything but. Its commitments on how religion can enter the public sphere influence the way we think about our faith, and in turn interact with our scholarship and scholars. In fact, it is one of the reasons for the erosion of trust in religious authority.
Dr. Usaama al-Azami joins Imam Tom Facchine in discussing the shifts in our understanding of religious interpretation and authority and how we can better engage with our scholarship.

They who have ears to hear, let them hear:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
I tell ye, truly, Jesus of Nazareth is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. He is the anointed one, for he is, Jesus Christ. God the Father has raised him from the dead; who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God! Angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by him. They who believe and are baptized with the Holy Spirit shall be saved; but they who believe not shall be damned. For they who believe not on him, shall die in their sins!
I tell ye now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."
      1 John 2:2 KJV
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
      Acts 13:26-33 KJV
26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, *and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.*
27 *For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.*
28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.
29 *And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.*
30 *But God raised him from the dead:*
31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.
32 *And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,*
33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
      1 Peter 3:22 KJV
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
      John 14:6 KJV
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
      Mark 16:16 KJV
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
      John 8:24 KJV
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
      Acts 2:38 KJV
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
      Luke 11:13 KJV
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
      John 14:21-24 KJV
21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.*
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.*
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.*

to be honest, as a student, scholar, and academia, I've been in a struggle to balancing out the development of logic and faith, esp. when the field is basically deeply down into secular way. its pretty dangerous if we dont have any strong support system, fitnah would hugely come. i truly grateful by knowing the talk over islamic knowledge and secular issue could balancing it out. :)

    Excellent series - mashaAllah
    1. Could you please do a course series, unpacking secular-liberal philosophy from inception to present day.
    2. If you could pls ask the speakers to avoid Arabic terminology as much as possible. As a student of knowledge, I'm able to 'follow' but do find myself pausing to recall the meaning of the word/s in order to understand the point - points which are sometimes conceptually heavy as it is without the need to translate.
I can thus see how the essence of points could be lost with an audience who are unfamiliar with the Arabic terminology albeit Islamic.

JazakumAllahu Khayran Imam Tom and Dr Azami for this timely discussion. The way this podcast rationalised and intellectualized this topic is noteworthy. Oftentimes the manifestation of these issues on the internet-sphere are ugly to say the least. The tone of this discussion brought dignity to that space. Having said that I would also like to give a student perspective. Tullaab have a tendency to become attached to their teachers. We dearly love those who bring us closer to the richness that is Islam (how can we not?) And so when we are encountered with the refuters (sp.?) and the like its causes a battle to rage within us, especially in relation to allegations against the character of our teacher/s. It's no easy task to identify if or not we are blinded by the attachment to our teacher/s both the ones in whose company we sit physically and those who Google brings to us and who have no idea of our existence. May Allah help us all.

Jazakum Allah khairan for these immensely beneficial videos. I have a request - I would greatly appreciate if you could link a reading list on key texts referenced in the video. Myself (and I'd imagine many who watch this) are starting to understand these topics so we may not have the familiarity with these essays or works of philosophy referenced in the videos

About female scholar representation, Ali dawah has a podcast that gives women a voice, it's really interesting. Although the percentage of female scholars is negligible, it's noticeable some women on Ali's show are progressing in the field of psychology. Even as single mothers they are doing post grads in psychology and running their own clinics. For this reason I believe the access of Western Moslem women to becoming scholars is not so important, Anglo American women can lead the way in psychology and Islam instead.

You said you will release a series of podcasts on feminism on Dogma Disrupted in September but it's been about 4 months now. I am eagerly waiting. Can you please give any idea when would it be out?
