  • Today's Question from Daniele D.
I read one comment and I would like to ask how to set different settings for half press and AF-ON and prioritize face detection or birds in half press and prioritize target AF when using AF-ON button. Thank you
Your support and donations are greatly appreciated!

That comment at the end was super important. I was wondering how you were getting those results without invoking AF when you took the shot. But now I get it. Thanks Rob.

Very interesting Rob, thanks for showing how the implementation of this feature works on Olympus. I really wish more TH-camrs went into this much detail as its very helpful when researching a camera. The majority of camera reviews are superficial and all discussing the same things. All cameras have AF tools nowadays, but its HOW they are implemented that separates and makes one brand's feature useful and another so so...

I set subject detect to the af-on button, and face detect to the front top button. If face detect is on, when I press af-on it switches to subject detect and face detect automatically switches off, and vice versa. If I don't want to use face detect I can additionally just press the front button. Then pressing af-on alternates between subject detection and focus target area.
Lastly, I have set my af target modes to be accessible via the left d-pad. This all works really fast for me. Bob, UK.

Wow nice going Rob. There is so much to learn and practice with OM1 AF. Shooting birds on a stick and in flight to and from said stick I have been running in to problem with AF point and subject detection jumping to other birds which suddenly appear in the frame. Your magic words about subject detect, no tracking and using all photo points has worked wonders. Holding the shutter button half pressed in Pro capture sh2 I am amazed how the white square and then the eye square appear over the bird no mater where it is in the viewfinder.
BUT then another bird appears and the subject square jumps around. What can I set to make the subject detect more sticky? I know, short question and a very long story but I just want to thank you again for going so deep
    into the OM1 menu explanations.

I tell you what I’d love to see and I feel is missing in the info online for these cameras is the basic settings - getting through complete iso settings, shutter speed, assigning zoom to a button etc etc
I haven’t seen anyone do this yet & my apologies if you have but I feel like there is a huge gap for this information to be readily available . I’ve just purchased one of these cameras. & there’s no one just doing the basics. Would be really great to see

Hi Rob, love this series, as an OM-1 user its been invaluable. I was just wondering how you've been able to record the screen? Is it by using an external monitor? Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍

For full screen, I use and HDMI to USB switch box and record in OBS. Otherwise, I use an overhead camera.

Go into the AF menu and turn on Subject Detect. You should be able to select from a variety of subjects, including birds.

Rob, it's a pity that I don't have, or plan to purchase the OM1.
Still have yet to master my 2 Pen Fs and the OMD E M10 Mk IV- the OM5 doesn't really offer enough to justify the purchase.

Hi Rob. Another great video. Just have a question regarding autofocusing on people when are moving like walking towards you. Does face detect do continuous focusing while it's on or do you need to focus using the shutter half press or back button? Or is there a better way to do it like just set the target with caf? Thanks again!

I don't do enough portrait work to give you a qualified answer. If the settings in this video don't improve your keeper rate, then you may have to consult with a more experienced photographer using the OM-1. Jimmy at Red35 would be my first choice there.

My AF2 menu doesn't look anything like this on my OMD1-3. My firmware is 1.6. Would it be controlled by which lens I have on the camera? Or which mode I'm in (ie, Manual v. A v. S?). Can anybody please help me with this?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Carol, I don't have my EM1.3 anymore, but I'm looking at user manual. For menu A2, I see "Mode Settings", "AF Area Pointer", etc... These settings are not affected by which lens or photo mode you are in. If you're having a specific problem, I'll need more information. Don't hesitate to email me rob at robtrek dot com. -Rob

Hey Rob, I recently purchased a OM-1 and have been doing a lot of watching videos and came across this fellow (who drinks way to much tea ) about using the digi-converter on the OM-1so I thought I would pass it along as it seems you are doing more wildlife now. You are probably already fam with it but would love to get your opinion about it. Thanks for posting all these videos I will definitely buy you a coffee as soon as I set up a pp account. th-cam.com/video/hXtjBhpZCkI/w-d-xo.html

    • @RobTrek

I just watched it from your link. Wow, that guy talks fast! 30 minutes about the digi teleconverter (DC). At my talking pace, it would be 1 hour+ video. LOL. Anyway, he gave some good tips and seems to have the credentials to back it up. I still prefer processing raws vs using the DC. I rarely have images in good light, so the DC would be a mess. Maybe I missed something, but you can assign a button to the DC if you want. Not sure why he dedicated a custom mode to it.
