    Not exactly a direct comparison, but I decided to try both amps to replace the non-working 75-watt amp on my Boston Acoustics CR400 subwoofer. The 300 watt Yung SD300 is actually the cheaper of the two amps, yet rated to be the most powerful. It is a Class D design and has an open back. Will this cause problems if mounted inside a subwoofer enclosure, due to vibration? Only time will tell.
    I also purchased the Class A/B Dayton Audio SPA250 to try out. This amp is rated 252 watts at 4 ohms with less than 1% THD. This is a VERY popular plate amplifier on Parts Express with nearly 5 star average with well over 200 reviews.
    You may be asking...why 250 or 300 watts to replace a 75 watt amp? Well, because I can? Honestly, I wanted to choose popular models and have flexibility to use them in different applications in the future. Plus, I thought you guys would want to see these models tested, so I did this for you!

    Love the review! Personally have the Dayton amp hooked up to a pair of 4ohm subs of mine. I Initially hooked them up in series, but tried them in parallel at 2ohms and the Dayton just pushes harder with no problems. May not be smart for the longevity of the amp, but is a testament to its quality. Keep it up wiz!

    Dayton audio has really surprised me for Audio! Never really heard of them but I bought a 12" powered subwoofer for hometheater system recently and hooked it up to a Rockford fosgate prime 400.4 in a car and the sub is bridged to 2 channels for just 200w pure rms power and all I gotta say is WOW!!

    Thank you for this review.
    I do want to note, the Yung amp does have an output limiter. I messed with mine one day and regardless of how high I turned the gain the output never went above ~300 watts, distorted or otherwise. Kudos to the Dayton, though. I like that enclosed design. A lot.

    I actually bought the Yung SD300 about 3 months ago to power my old 12" 4ohm Powerbass car sub for a set up in my bathroom lol. (now I upgraded and it's going to go in the garage). It's been working great!
    I actually built a small box for the amplifier itself and added terminal inputs to it. That way I could plug in any sub to it as it's own standalone amplifier. Good to know it actually does do it's rated 300wrms! And interesting test at the end at 2.6ohms!
    Keep it up BigDWiz!!

    • @wal
      @wal  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my initial listening tests, they both sounded equally good to my ears. I’ve heard some concerns with the Yung’s reliability, I’m betting it is due to vibration of components on the circuit board. I may use mine externally, building a small enclosure for the amp, not sure yet

    My first dayton 200 lasted me almost 16 years on a various subwoofers. My yung sd300 lasted 2 years and will no longer power on. It ran cool and had lots of power running a dayton classic 18. I loved it untill it died for no reason and now I'm using the Dayton 250 like in your video with no problems so far.

      @@wal Sorry for the Necro post but I need to vent. :-) I have 4 of the Yung SD300-6 plate amps. The first 2 died 2 and 3 months after warranty. The replacement plate lasted 4.5 years installed in a Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 sub-woofer cabinet driving the 2, 8 inch subs. But I religiously switched the unit off after using it and was used only for PC gaming. It died and the 4th replacement Yung plate I had on the shelf that whole time died after 2 minutes. The red power light comes on but does not switch to green when receiving signal. I've never had the sub volume past half way. My other sub cabinet was a 10 in Alpine speaker and was one of the original Yung plate amps I had that died just after warranty. All amps died with the same issue, seems to power up but no activation. Why did I buy them a second time, well the holes in the cabinets were already the right size. I will never buy a Yung plate amp again now though after 4 failures. Plate amps dying seems to be part of the territory with these things but I would definitely switch to another brand like Dayton next time.

    I have great plate amplifiers. Definitive Technology BP3000TL's! 18's with 1,500 watt amps in each towah!!! 155lbs each tower weighs. I've wanted those speakers since 1996 when they came out and I was at Best Buy when they had Cambridge, KLH and Bose and other brands in the theater room. The Def Tech's were in the furthest back corner and had the best THX bass. But they only had the 2,000's back then and I managed after sooo many years constantly searching for someone to sell the 3,000's. BOOM! A broke Congressman from Michigan who took off to Virginia in a Mansion then lost the Mansion and headed to North Carolina. He was a no good dude who fronted money to Al Qaeda. I didn't know any of this until after I drove from Detroit to North Carolina to buy from a dude on Ebay. I found the original sale brochure and receipt in one of the tower socks. These towers are bi-polar array with T-line boxes. Phenomenal sound! Holy crap! Who is this guy this brochure and Def Tech actually put his name on commercial paperwork! I was like whoa dude is mad important! lol. Now he is running a Church with evangelism or whatever that is. People talk smack on Ebay I find treasures all the time! Don't just settle. WAIT. Save those mags with price lists and aim for the best of that year forever because no matter what the best of any year usually and always is better than any mediocre stuff in the future always. A 3,000 watt Left and Right tower speaker set-up will never be less than that. Never less than the 18's that listen to this BIG D!!!! listen... 13htz they go down to!!!! 13!!!! Not 35htz, 30htz, 27htz, or like most 15's and 18's in the vehicles going no lower than maybe 15htz. 13! They knock the crap out of my Limestone house and the stone walls contain that bass sooo good 1 foot thick!! I'm always ready to RUUUUMMMBBBLLEEE!!

    hey nice test there
    i have the dayton amp. i tried hooking up two 8 ohm 12 inch woofers to it, in parallel, and it got REALLY hot, enough where you couldn't touch the heat sinks. it was supposed to be for a light weight pa subwoofer. yeah i don't recommend that
    so now i have it on two other 4 ohm 12 inch woofers in series. now this is for home theater sub and it sounds great
    i'll always choose a/b over class d every time. how does the class d sound against the dayton? did you compare that?

  • @ojwilks

    So the Yung does look impressive performance-wise compared to the Dayton. I am wondering about longevity though. I have read some reviews where people indicated their Yung plate seemed to run really hot and some said theirs eventually blew out and quit (not saying this would happen to everyone). I noticed as you indicated about the Dayton having sealed internals and that the heatsink is all external (much more surface area than the Yung heatsink), and the Yung releases all it's heat toward the inside too so if using a vented box then might be fine, but if you are wanting to run sealed, then it may run at hotter temps.
    I can see that as a drawback in my case because am looking to build a sealed box subwoofer, and originally thought to get the Yung and build the box with an intermediate chamber to mount the amp on, having a fan vent system (flowing outside air through it) to keep amp chamber cool.
    The Dayton seems to be better in the cooling aspect though, since it has external heat sink and would not require any special design to account for temperature. In your case, you have a small speaker and will probably never drive the speaker close to amp limits and thus it may never get that hot really...

    I realise this is an older review, but the Parts Express still sells the Dayton Audio SPA250. FYI, I am considering buying Qty 2 plates and pairing one each to JL Audio 12"TW1-4 (300w, 4Ω) subwoofers for my left + right DolbyAtmos front sound stage... I am designing into a low profile and architecturally integrated / built-in-wall home theatre front stage stage. I can not seem to find any multi-channel LFE input subwoofer 'amp' only options as I would have thought? What are your thoughts or would you use a different combination? Thanks, Jason

    That makes sense the Dayton went into protect and the Yung didn't. The Dayton is Class A/B so the amplifier simply ran to it's limit and it shut off, Class D amplifiers can limit themselves to prevent damage.

    Hey BigDWiz. Waiting on the follow up video to see how they go with that Boston sub..
    I have just got the Yung SD300-6 plate amp to replace the faulty plate amp in my Velodyne CHT-12Q subwoofer.
    Though on taking the old amp out & putting on my multi meter. It's a 8ohm subwoofer in there..
    If I work out the internal enclosure size. Would I be able to fit a 4ohm subwoofer that suits that enclosure & install it?
    Then I would in theory go from 150w to 300w output.. Sub is used mainly in Home theater

    Excellent work again my good friend. Nice to see these plates getting some straight up honest testing. Question: I am looking at rebuilding my home theatre/hi-fi system and was looking at replacing the plates on my two Klipsch KSW-10's with the Dayton plates. Was wondering if using a dedicated sub amp like the Dayton audio sa1000 might be a better investment vs buying two plates and replacing the old Klipsh plates on the KSW-10's This would allow for upgrade ability in the future should I decide to upgrade the subs in the system. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks again for all of your hard work!

    • @wal
      @wal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that single SA1000 would do well for 2 subs as long as the impedance matches the amp

The asw-210 is a dual driver for two 10”. I could opt to buy other subs but it’s hard to let go of such a good sub. The dimensions I measured was 7 7/8 inch x 11 3/4 inches for the plate with 4 horizontal x 3 vertical screw holes.

    I love that ending with that loooong thick brick amplifier U.S. AMPS! Dayummmm!!! I once ordered a 15" CEA or CES. I could never ever find the company again after I bought it. It was a Velodyne ripoff. But by ripoff I mean it was just as good for wayyyy less. 15" CEA or CES It was Cinema Audio Theater or Cinema Theater Audio Or CER. I don't remember I tossed it in a bon fire in my backyard because one night I was impressin' this girl Strawbary Shortkutt a escort and female rapper from Arizona. She came to Detroit and I offered to record her label mate Mastamind from Natas. Long story short I was drunk, we all were drunk and bumping that 15 with some pure low sine wavs from a frequency generator mixed in the music. WOMPWOMP BZZZCCCRRRKKKKKKKKtsch!! BLEW IT by putting wayy too much input and gain that night. I got carried away. But that's how it wasn't a Velodyne. hahaha. The sub blew but that amp was still good for a few years when I pulled it out of the box and smacked that plate amp on another box with a Dual Lanzar Pros with the thick paper pulp cones and thick baskets of the mid 90's. I had those babies for a loong time until they got stolen. Never blew those puppies.

    Don't understand this AC to DC adapter (do you mean DC to AC inverter?). They both have their own AC power connector and internal power supply which dont supply their main circuit board with 12V DC (could be a different DC voltages). Yung has a switching power supply which matches perfectly D class amp while I am not sure about Dayton AB amp since it is enclosed. Considering the weight it probably has a coil transformer in it so each has its own DC power supply internally. How did you measured the output on 12.3V DC?

    • @wal
      @wal  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When measuring car audio amplifiers, the Amp Dyno shares the power source with the amplifier, thus the resulting voltage display matches power output at a specific voltage. When I test home audio amplifiers, the Amp Dyno has a 120V AC to 12V DC power supply so the Amp Dyno can perform the tests. In this case the 12.3V shown has no importance to the test at all.

    • @beograd07
      @beograd07 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wal Thanks for that. So Dyno can "read" the AC voltage on speaker output terminals on tested amp and put it against the chosen ohm resistance (in this case 4 and 8 ohms) and measure the outputs in wats... That Dyno must be one expensive piece of tool. Thanks for doing all these tests in all these years for us who cannot afford it. Well wort subscribing and always watching to the end...

    Sweet video! That Amp Dyno had to cost some coin. What a cool thing to have. Edit, looked it up, retail is 3.5K. Woo!!!
    PE has good stuff. I bought their 408 DSP for my home system, which runs an ancient Yamaha amp from the 80s, very nice upgrade. Not only did I enjoy dialing the speakers in via the EQ, I no longer have to get up off my ass to raise or lower the volume of the system thanks to the handy cell phone app. Dunno how I lived in such no remote for the sound system poverty for so long.
    Just irrationally attached to that old A700 Yamaha amp, which I bought new in '82. It was there for many college parties. It was there playing romantic background music when I got laid for the first time. I just gotta have it in my life - LMAO
