This band built a global media / marketing / music empire that still lives on 50 years later. I wonder if Queen / Freddie M learned a thing or two from them. Pop opera.

A surprising reaction 🤯! The phrase "Mamma Mia" is an Italian saying that literally means "My Mother" and is used to express surprise. I see 👁👁 you have reacted to ABBA before: Dancing Queen, Happy New Year, Does Your Mother Know, The Name Of The Game, SOS, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! and Knowing Me Knowing You. Mamma Mia was released as the sixth single from ABBA's 1975 album: ABBA. It was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson. It was produced by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead vocals. It reached #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #32 on the Hot 100 and #36 on the Cash Box 100. It peaked at #1 in the UK, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland and Germany. The music video was directed by Lasse Hallström.
The distinctive sound at the start of the song is from the marimba, an instrument of African origin similar to the xylophone but with wooden bars. According to ABBA biographer Carl Magnus Palm, the instrument was incorporated at the last minute, added after Benny Andersson found it in the studio and decided its "tick tock" rhythm was perfect for the track. The song was written at the home of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and was the last track recorded for the album ABBA. It was one of four songs from the album to have a music video made to promote the album. Initially, however, the song was never intended for release as a single.
In a great example of lyrical dissonance, this infectiously catchy tune contains very sad lyrics dealing with heartbreak and the pain of letting someone go who you wish you could have back. This attention to lyrics (at least the English ones) was new for ABBA. Bjorn Ulvaeus explained: "In the beginning lyrics were a sort of necessary evil for us, just something you had to have to sing, usually it was about looking out for a hookline and then building something around that. But by the third album, when my grasp of English had got much better because we'd traveled a lot, I began to think that it would be fun to say something as well, and that people would listen to what we sang".
In 1999, the musical stage production: Mamma Mia!, opened in London. The show was based on ABBA's songs, which were used in the production. The show opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical, but lost to the musical: Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Mamma Mia!, also promoted as Mamma Mia! The Movie, is a 2008 jukebox musical romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson, based on her book from the 1999 musical of the same name. The film is based on the songs of ABBA, with additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. The film features an ensemble cast, including Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Meryl Streep, and Julie Walters. The plot follows a young bride-to-be who invites three men to her upcoming wedding, with the possibility that any of them could be her father. A film sequel: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was released in 2018, with much of the cast returning.
In 2010, the Danish right wing People's Party reworked the song's main lyric in honor of the organisation's chief, Ms Pia Kjaersgaard. Their revised version was played at the party's rallies, and the organisation's youth wing performed a live version. After Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus threatened to sue the party an out of court settlement was reached in which the Danes agreed to stop using the song.
The song has been covered by other artists including 📻: Los Chicos Del Puerto Rico, A*Teens, Hazell Dean, Sabine Sauvant, Cher, Frank Valdor, James Last, Five Iron Frenzy, George Lam, Christopher John, Anita Hirvonen, Oľga Szabová, Richard Clayderman, Meryl Streep and more.
    Miscellaneous Notes 🗃:
ABBA perform parts of the song live in the 1977 film: "ABBA: The Movie".
The song is featured in the 2014 video game 🎮: Just Dance Now.
In 2017, Billboard ranked the song number seven on their list of the 15 greatest ABBA songs.
In 2018, Austin Weber uploaded his cover of the song on TH-cam where he remade the song with a synth keyboard, recorded his own vocals and danced to them while in Kyoto, Japan. This popular cover would go on to get over 9.3 million views.
In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked the song number five on their list of the 25 greatest ABBA songs.
As of September 2021, it is ABBA's seventh-biggest song in the UK with 860,000 chart sales (pure sales and digital streams).

    Lyrics 🗒:
I've been cheated by you since I don't know when
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don't know how but I suddenly lose control
There's a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, whoa
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
    Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I could never let you go
I've been angry and sad about things that you do
I can't count all the times that I told you we're through
And when you go, when you slam the door
I think you know that you won't be away too long
You know that I'm not that strong
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, whoa
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
    Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, even if I say
Bye bye, leave me now or never
Mamma mia, it's a game we play
    Bye bye doesn't mean forever
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
    Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I could never let you go
    ABBA Info 📰:
ABBA are a Swedish Pop supergroup formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names arranged as a palindrome: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid. The group members of ABBA were married as follows: Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus from 1971 to 1979, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad from 1978 to 1981. They are one of the most popular and successful musical groups of all time, and are one of the best-selling music acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982, and in 2022. In 1977 ABBA: The Movie, was produced. It is a mockumentary comedy-drama film about ABBA's Australian tour. An international co-production from Sweden and Australia, the film was directed by Lasse Hallström, who helmed most of the band's videos.
The discography of Swedish Pop music group ABBA consists of nine studio albums, two live albums, seven compilation albums, four box sets, five video albums, 50 singles, and 43 music videos. To date, ABBA has sold 150 million records worldwide becoming one of the best-selling music artists in history. They have scored 9 No. 1 singles and 10 No. 1 albums in the UK, becoming the most successful Swedish act of all time on the Official Charts. ABBA are among the best-selling music artists in history, with record sales estimated to be between 150 million to 385 million sold worldwide and the group were ranked 3rd best-selling singles artists in the United Kingdom with a total of 11.3 million singles sold by November 3, 2012.
In 1974, ABBA were Sweden's first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song: "Waterloo", which in 2005 was chosen as the best song in the competition's history as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the contest. The band members were married. With the increase of their popularity, their personal lives suffered, which eventually resulted in the collapse of both marriages. The relationship changes were reflected in the group's music, with later compositions featuring darker and more introspective lyrics. After ABBA disbanded in December 1982, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus continued their success writing music for multiple audiences including stage, musicals and movies, while Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Lyngstad pursued solo careers releasing several albums.
Ten years after the group broke up, a compilation album: ABBA Gold, was released becoming a worldwide best-seller. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into the stage play: Mamma Mia!, that toured worldwide and, as of April 2022, is still in the top-ten longest running productions on both Broadway (closed in 2015) and the West End (still running). A film of the same name: Mamma Mia!, released in 2008, became the highest-grossing film in the United Kingdom that year. A film sequel: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was released in 2018.

The group's album: Voyage, their first new album in 40 years, was released on 5 November 2021 to positive critical reviews and strong sales in numerous countries. In 2024, ABBA still performs their music on stage in 2024 via their virtual concert residency: ABBA Voyage. These concerts feature virtual avatars, depicting the group as they appeared in 1979, and use vocals re-recorded by the group in a Swedish studio specifically for this show, accompanied by a live band on stage. However the group doesn't perform together live on stage. Benny Andersson still performs live with his Benny Andersson Band (BAO). Björn Ulvaeus still performs live with a backing band as well. Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskög don't have any events scheduled for 2024.

This video was shot after Agnetha had her first child and it took her a little while to get rid of her tummy. In 1977 she had her second child.
She was a gorgeous creature regardless.

Great song great reaction. Love me some ABBA not sure how much you know about them. They were two married couples from Sweden. The blonde girl, Agnetha married Bjorn the guitarist and the red haired girl , Ani-Frid aka Frida married Benny the pianist. That's where the name ABBA comes from, their first initials
    Agnetha
    Bjorn
    Benny
    Ani-Frid
Bjorn and Agnetha had 2 children but she was wasn't pregnant here. To say they were huge in the 70s and 80s is an understatement. They have sold over 400 million records. A couple years ago they came back after 40 years gone! They built a special arena in London with Avaters aka ABBATARS of themselves that are soooo real you feel like you could touch them. They spent months 8 hours a day wearing special motion catching suits with 160 cameras that recorded them doing all the moves,, even their blinks and the voices and abbatar movements are them but a live band plays . It's Not holigrams 100x bettter. No ones seen anything like it.. could be the future of concerts.. They also released a new album called voyage. Take care
