  • I've grown frustrated with the current state of navigation options for adventure motorcycling. The theoretical top dog at this time is Garmin Zumo XT, which I've been using for more than 2 years now. Yes, it does basic navigation and some additional functions that I've never really explored, but it leaves a lot to desire.
    Recently, I've started on a journey to start racing navigation rallies, and on that universe, there are 2 options: the traditional paper roll roadbook apparatus, and a new trend of digital roadbook navigators. I decided I wanted to give the DesertX the capability of entering rally races, and I've opted for digital.
    I was able to find a company that specializes in creating outdoor tablets for the drone market, and they just recently developed a model for more rugged applications. What they offer are 2 Android tablets that are not only rugged, but have a high brightness display to make sure the screen is visible under sun light.
    In this video, we just look at the components and main features that come in the box. As I embark on the journey of assembling and configuring it for off-road rally and plain navigation, I will issue more videos, so stay tunned...
    I bought it directly from the manufacturer in China and it didn't take long for it to arrive in my house in San Diego, California (less than 2 weeks). I wouldn't be surprised if you would be able to find it in several distribution channels in the US or world wide.

    Looking forward to seeing this all powered up and in action!

      I tested the included mount on the handlebar. I forgot to tighten the shoe mount and on the first off-road jump the tablet flew away from the bike. After recovering, I cleaned the dust and it was as good as new. So, first robustness test done :)

    A company no one has heard of. A mere 30 day warranty. And a $500 price tag makes this a hard choice at this time. I DO want to believe but if a new company doesn't have enough confidence in their own product to offer a decent warranty it's hard to feel good about laying down the cash. Just because they can wire a circuit board doesn't mean it's going to keep up with android and google changes over time. These issues are not a given and there is no indication they will continue to update the firmware as the world changes. There are videos posted by drone pilots that are experiencing serious issues with this unit.
    My guess is that there is a reason why Pdu has not posted an update on this unit. I expect he has had serious issues.

      Their website states a one-year warranty, with a 30-day return policy.

    Hi did you had some problems connecting 12v cable charging?
    I ve mount xt70 on KTM 1290 and I must use a tension regulator to avoid switch off when I start the bike

    Interesting, Ive never heard of Huge Rock until now, I’m using the Thork Racing T-865 8” tablet (550 grams) 800nits on my DDX and the Oukitel RT3 8” (545grams) 400nits on my Kove 450 Rally. Are you going to be using the DMD2 software for your rally book/nav/etc?

    • @merloti
      @merloti  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've installed DMD2 and it works fine. For rally book I'm using Piste. I want to use the tablet in landscape position, and the Rally Navigator app is clunky in that orientation. What app are you using for road book? And more importantly, are you using any handlebar controls on the DDX or Kove?
      BTW, I'll use my KTM 500 to crash and burn while I'm learning nav rally, but the bike I really want for rally is the Kove. Have you taken it to a rally competition? Are you in the US?

      @@merloti I currently have a broken spine so I can’t ride until March 2024. 🙁 super lame! I have the Carpe Adventure controller on my DDX but I haven’t really tested it other than in the garage. I bought the Kove as a light ADV bike for exploring places in AZ and Mexico where I’m not comfortable on my DDX. Unfortunately I think my racing days might be over but I’ll know more in January when I go for my follow up. I have not ridden the Kove yet. I had one of my pro buddies attend a Kove demo and he liked the bike so I ordered it.

      @risrider .. Thork can keep the brightness in sun for longer period ? (or as long as it`s use) not like dropping after 30 min? (in a highway trip over 600 miles, brightness goes under 40% on my samsung :( )

      @risrider 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VirusAlert0 I haven’t noticed any drop, I just rode 1200kms and I didn’t notice any decrease in brightness.

    could you just tell me how you connected those 4 pins that are together with the power supply, and what are they for? I can't find anything online pls 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😰

    • @HugerockGlobal
      @HugerockGlobal หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To connect the power supply, only two thick wires are required: red for DC+ and black for DC−. The other four pins are designed to meet specific custom requirements of customers, facilitating connection for peripheral device expansion. These include gray for GND, yellow for VCC_5V, green for RS232_TX, and white for RS232_RX. If serial data transmission is not needed, it is recommended not to use these connections. We suggest insulating them with adhesive to prevent short circuits.

    Have you mounted the tablet on the motorcycle and tested it outside in sunlight? Would you recommend buying it? Can you make a comparison with the Carpe Iter?

      @merloti  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can't compare with the Carpe Iter, but it is super bright. I had no problems with visibility under any sunlight conditions.

    Did you find out if it`s necessary to instal that gps antena? and.. what modules it supports? Gnss, galileo, glonas, beidou, agps?

    • @merloti
      @merloti  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The manufacturer says all of them. No, I'm using the internal antenna and it's been good enough for Waze, Gaia, Locus, etc. For rally navigation I'm very tempted to install the external antenna. I'll be attending the Socal Roadbook Rally in March with this setup and will post more info once I have it.

    • @HugerockGlobal
      @HugerockGlobal หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are in areas with poor GPS satellite signals, such as canyons or shaded areas for extended periods, using an external antenna will yield better positioning results.
      The X70's positioning module utilizes UBLOX's high-precision M9N module, which supports GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and Galileo.
