- In this video, I break down Dallas Cowboys DT Mazi Smith, who had a very disappointing rookie season, after entering the league with tons of promise. At times, he showed some flashes of the skills that the Cowboys hoped he'd bring to their DL, but for the most part, he was overpowered and ineffective, in the limited snaps he did play.

Will Mazi Smith take a step up in year 2? Or is he already a bust?
Bust because some of these technical issues look like he isn’t even trying to play right
I think he take a stem forward he seems like a zimmer guy
He WILL step up big time and within 5 years he will be all pro/pro bowl level player
He just doesnt have that jump off the ball. Dont know if that can be fixed but gaining weight is going to slow him down. Give him 2 more years before you can say he is a bust.
I'm holding out hope that the scheme and gaining back some weight we'll see improvement. If he starts to get some work with the team. If he misses training camp, I dont see how he will improve
Donovan Wilson is popping on this tape. Love the way he plays as a 205LB guy
A sub-300 nose tackle. What a brilliant idea.
Believe it or not, Jay Ratliff was under 300 and made the pro bowl several times as an NT.
He was a Cowboys 7th round draft pick.
It’s super frustrating they told him to cut over 30 pounds he was told too by DQ but the weight staff advised not too. which is probably why he ended up with a shoulder injury mid season he immediately got surgery on after the season ends. Such a waste of year to develop and a huge mess up by the Dallas staff
That just did not happen.
More likely than not he stopped taking steroids due to the NFLs ped testing protocols.
That is the only explanation that makes sense and would explain losing 40 pounds in the middle of a season.
In the HISTORY of professional team sports (NFL NBA MLB NHL) I have never heard of an athlete losing 40 lbs during a regular season.
Take away the steroids and you will have a completely different player.
Weeks 3,4,5 he had terrible grades, no way he lost 30 lbs in that time
I'm not giving up on a defensive tackle after a rookie season. DTs are always given around 3 years to get good on any other team.
Smh he showed nothing all season. I hope you & everyone else is right. Because year one was horrible
I liked Mazi coming out but I always felt he was a bit of a project. I knew he wasn't going to do much year one. I expected him to be a solid starter year two and even more than that year 3. My concern is he had off season shoulder surgery and has been rehabbing all off-season instead of really being able to work on his game. I'm concerned on how much better he will be this season because of it.

Dude had half a sack in 35 games at Michigan, no one saw him as a pass rusher in the pros
Hes also always last off the ball
Bust.
it takes 3 yrs to establish urself at interior Dline..Simmons,Lawrence, etc..takes time
Not for 1st round draft picks
Excellent breakdown of his tape by you. Learned a lot about footwork and hand placement with this. I think if he can improve on the technical side of shedding blocks or anchoring down and eating up blocks he will be fine. I don’t ever think he’s going to be a dynamic pass rusher. He should try to model his game after Vince Willfork and not try to be Aaron Donald
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it his power was a real strength loosing weight isn’t going to make it better even Steve Avila probably the best rookie guard from last season said his toughest opponent he faced in college was Mazi Smith if he gets back on track he will be a very good player
Maxi spends 50%of the time on the ground and the other 50% trying to get up
💯💯💯
Disappointing rookie year especially when you have expectations for a first round rookie to come in and contribute especially with Joey porter Jr being taken some picks later , Jr really could of helped us out with the Trevon diggs Injury , Jr , Bland and Gilmore could of had us win at least 2 more games 🔥
When you're getting manhandled and embarrassed like this you don't belong.. body weight doesn't put you on your back..😂😂 This man is done unless he starts a Tren cycle immediately.. Hope for his sane they burn these tapes😂😂😂
Youre right about the steroids, or the lack thereof.
Obviously he was on roids at Michigan but stopped because of the nfl ped testing protocols.
We need Nolan smith next if there’s even enough tape on him yet
Good luck the eagles ain't letting that gem go but sounds good
@@kevinarnett8590 I’m sorry how many brain cells do you have like what are you even saying ? This guy reviews film I was asking for Nolan smith tape review 😂😂
Honestly don’t really care for this channel because I find it heavily biased, but I will give a fair shake like anyone else’s.
First of all imagine being asked to drop 30 pounds and then expecting to keep the same power, and then talk as if that was his fault, come on dude.
Second of all cowboys had some of the worst lb play all year, with our two best LBs being injured early we had to rely on a Sam lb playing Mike and 2 safeties playing lb, so even when he did his job the lb sold, but sure blame that on him.
I’m not saying he’s above criticism, nor am I saying he doesn’t deserve it, but don’t ignore the other factors just to push a narrative, with better LB play he’s going to look better, and frankly he has the traits to be an elite DT for years to come.
All in all, if you’re going to evaluate somebody, EVALUATE them, don’t take certain clips and then ignore everything else just to support a take, if you’re gonna to over film GO OVER FILM
😂blaming linebackers for getting manhandled by guards and centers
Sorry I'm late on the comment but Gaither & Zimmer pretty much line linebackers in the A gap
I just don't think he was coached much at all. This defense was focused more on the pass than the run. Good run blocking REQUIRES good technique. He's going to see double teams and needs to have his feet in the right place. I bet Zimmer puts special attention on his play during training camp.
Poor coaching
Keeanu Benton was better
Complete Late first round bust. We reached on that guy. I had a mid-to-late third-round grade on him.. now he looks to be about 285 and I don't think he would be a great three technique iether. He lost way too much weight.
never liked him in the draft.
That sounds like some BS
He’s a bust because he’s coming off surgery and can’t work on his technique or even strengthen his body for the riggers of next season.
Mazi didn’t do anything last season that impressed me, he definitely wasn’t worth a first round pick either, I don’t think he will do that much for the team, hope I’m wrong and he turns into a beast, but I just don’t see it al all❗️

I agree 100%. Slow feet slow off the ball. Not very dominant at the point of attack. Another first-round bust
