I give it a solid 7 the animated show very much is so much better that this is dissatisfying in the fact that they undercut character arcs for the sake of getting the story to the end in 8 episodes. Some legit isht acting from some of the actors while the main cast is good. Though it seems all the actors had serious lip excema… the animation is mostly good but it seems like there’s a lot of motion blur and random intentional blurring of backgrounds wasting the great sets … also the complete lack of Ang katara love interests is baffling

not learning water bending was the most perplexing thing to me. All the other changes feel minor and for the sake of mushing together certain stories into less episodes and it mostly works well. Not water bending tho was a let down. and Katara not bonding with pakku because of Gran Gran and actually learning a little from him. Solid overall though 8/10. Acting was kinda rough but expected from the youngest.

I loved almost everything they did with the expanded role of the royal family. I do kind of feel like it came at the cost of developing the relationship between Team Avatar. I realized about halfway through that I didn't actually have a great feel on how close our main cast was. That was the soul of the original (and wanted to be the soul of this version) and it left a lot to be desired. But the chemistry between Zuko and Iroh was incredible, ozai as a more grounded abusive father was great to see and Azula's actress has understated talent. The look on her face during the agni Kai said so much she is perfect.

I feel like if Netflix greenlit the next seasons (which they haven’t done yet) they’ll probably want to drag the show out to 4 seasons. Book 3 really has two parts anyways at the end of the eclipse. I would imagine that’s how they’d end season 3 then have the final one end with the conclusion.

Like, i can see why the creators left and didn't want this version but at the same time, i can see why Netflix DID want this version. They didn't have to change some things, like the way Aang comes out the iceberg, having Roku as his Avatar guide, switching up Oma and Shu, Sokka being sexist towards Suki and realizing she's the better warrior, Aang shows zero attraction towards Katara, the whole Koh thing, the way Zhao was taken out was anticlimactic and doesn't match his crimes against the spirits. It's a great adaptation and i didn't expect it to be as good as it is, i just found these things a little annoying

  • @olson_media
    @olson_media 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Honestly, i thought the show was mid.
I fully went into it and expected a much different adaptation, and honestly i wanted it. I didnt want it to be 1:1 to the OG show. But there was just as much i liked about it then what i didnt. Below are my reasons:
Firstly, i think the show shined its best when they did something completely new and original that the OG show didn’t have. Like the genocide. And when they did 1:1 recreation moments, I thought they did good as well. But the biggest issue to me is when they did 1:1 moments, but changed them drastically.
I disliked Kyoshi because they basically made her a jerk that had zero sympathy towards aang. She just bullied him for her scene. I disliked Bumi because they also turned him into a bitter jerk. And he became completely unlikable to me. I liked Zuko, and I liked what they did with his character and how it's different, but at times he was too jolly in the way he spoke which turned me off from seeing his character as one who has had serious trauma from the agni kai. Avatar Kuruk was bitter as well which really sucked, and they basically trashed him as an avatar.
And roku.... *sigh*... my favorite past avatar they just butcher. Terrible casting, because although he's got the looks he sounds nothing like Roku. And although differences in that are fine, obvisouly the actors arent going to sound exactly the way they do in the OG, roku has a whole demeanor to him. The actor sounds like hes in his early 30's, and talks nothing like the way Roku should. He acts like the fun uncle. I should know because i am a fun uncle lol. And they make him out to be a bit bitter as well, because at the end he tells Aang friendships arent good for the avatar. At this point in the story, the avatars should be lifting up Aang in support, not bringing him down.
I thought the way they combined some stories and not others actually fit pretty well, but the one thing I thought was too forced was Jet and freedom fighters. First of all, Pipsqueak was TERRIBLE casting. I actually laughed out loud in disbelief and had to pause the show when he walked on screen. Pip is a grown man, not a teen thats not threatening at all whatsoever, especially when they tried to make him so. Just terrible casting. And honestly made me feel like it would have been better off to not have them in it at all.
Production wise it was great, music was great, but some of the costumes were too cosplay-like. Jet and the freedom fighters are a great example. They look like great 1:1 comparisons, but they are too good. It literally looks like a cosplay/fan film costume that isn't realistic to the world. And although Jets actor was great, that hair just looks wayyyyyyyyyy too fake, even if it wasnt a wig. Speaking of, Yua's wig in the northern tribe was laughable. Its ridiculous that got passed to be on screen as realistic.
Another issue is that the language spoke just didnt always feel fitting. Media, short of it being a modern day flick or documentary, is supposed to take you out of the world and immerse you elsewhere. 90% of the show did that, but then people would say things that i would hear one of my friends say. Case in point is Katara telling Sokka "Im sure master paku is going to mop the floor with me". Like what? And then the cursing. I get its more mature, but its just not Avatar, especially since its technically based on the past.
Aang also seems much more useless in the show. He never waterbends (the spirit at the end doesnt count) which concerns me because he was supposed to at least start learning water bending. He spends every episode "ahh I failed the world, i have to bring balance and learn the elements" but does nothing to accomplish that. Instead, he either bullies himself with the same old i ran away speech, or someone bullies him and he never learns water bending. He never does it once! And next season he's supposed to be starting on earth. I know theres a two year time jump between seasons but is that really how its gonna be? Aang is only going to learn other bending off screen? You cant have him start water next season otherwise how do you expect him to also learn earth at the same time. I feel cheated on seeing that growth, and feels like, as the audience, I'm going to be left behind from seeing that. It also makes me worried for how they'll treat the other elements going forward. With that, aside from kyoshi i just felt the avatar, aang, wasn't really doing much at all. Aang didn't do much as the avatar he just went places. It felt more like Katara's show.
The finale fell flat as well for two reasons. One, water bending never really felt different. It always looked as if water bending was the same two to three moves over again, even for the masters. The show shined when combat showed something different, but it didn't do it much. It also felt slow. Sped up, water bending is a lot coolor to watch live action. Secondly, the fish spirit fell flat because it didn't really do anything. In the show, it wiped out nearly all the firebenders with several water moves and waves. The fish did a water slap once, and then did the wave thing at the end which totaled about 30 seconds of screen time. Every other shot was just a godzilla rip off. For the rest of its time on screen it just roared like godzilla and looked around. So it fell flat as a result.
I doubt anyone will read this all, but if you do I'd love to hear your thoughts. I had a good time watching, but it just ended up being.. mid.

    - Aang randomly popped out of the iceberg.
    - Gran Gran is Katara and Sokka's mother.
    - Katara's feminist nature was toned down (as opposed to Sokka's sexism being toned down).
    - Hei Bai is pronounced "hi bye."
    - "Forcing Aang to travel to Avatar Roku's shrine in the Fire Nation in order to save the untethered souls of his friends."

Im surprised no one in talking about how much they changed the dynamic between Suki and Sokka. They made Suki kinda creepily stalk Sokka and she’s like obsessed with him right away. It was distracting in my opinion. Sokka’s arc of being embarrassed and refusing to acknowledge that the Kyoshi warriors got the better of him and could fight like true warriors then changing his attitude and asking, humbly, to be trained by them is a huge part of his character development.

After binge-watching the 8 episodes, let me put out one straight fact: The Netflix Live-Action Adaptation is AMAZING😀😀 and so GOOD....!!!!! No sensible person can expect a copy-paste of the animated series, and Netflix really transitioned the Avatar story into a proper Live-Action adaptation with its spirit intact.
The changes that I really liked are:-
    1. Introducing Azula & Ozai in season 1 - This move really shows the audience how she is indirectly manipulated into becoming the psychopathic villain that she is in the Avatar arc by Ozai. The animated series shows this link much later in season 3, but by introducing both of them here it is clear that the real villain is Ozai and Azula is just a manipulated puppet in his hand.
    2. Not showing the connection between Gran-Gran and Pakku -- In the animated series, the change of heart of Pakku from a sexist old prik to a normal old man is triggered by the discovery of Katara's necklace, which actually erases the point of Katara & Pakku's fight. But here by allowing his internal misogyny to get hurt & ashamed by how the Northern Water tribe kids got impressed by Katara & the eventual forceful appeal by all the women in the face of doom, the transition looks more real.
    3. Introducing Lu Ten's death & its impact on Iroh -- This move actually makes the character of Uncle Iroh more rich, and shows the depth of the bond between Zuko & Iroh. A Live-action cannot afford Iroh to always be goofy about tea & food like in the Animated Series.
That being said, clubbing some major storylines of the animated series together into 2-episode arcs might seem a bit odd, but for a live-action part, it is still justifiable. Also remember that even for the animated series, Book1 water is the weakest, followed by much better & stronger Book2 and 3, that is after Toph is introduced.
However, I am getting some strong vibes that Netflix may try to reduce/eliminate the romantic chemistry between Aang & Katara, which if they did will not be acceptable.
I will give it 4.3/5 stars.

So how many ships are in the Fire Navy? Ozai lost at least 50 ships to Koizilla, as a "distraction". Who was watching the Northern Water Tribe? Who was distracted? They say at the beginning that the nations don't talk anymore. This seemed like a really stupid plan.

The way I understood it was as: word travels around, and it was that the northern water tribe was going to be attacked, which probably let the guard down of the earth kingdom, not expecting a full blown, possibly bigger, attack (idk how big that army was, could’ve been from the inside since fire nation had spies within). Who knows tbh
I do wish we get to see that battle, and the siege of ba sing se, would be dope.

I REALLY liked how they ret-conned Pakkus arc. In the original, he only decided to train Katara because he had a hard on for her gram-gram. But in this one, she showed her the there is strength in women that he didn't see. Much better arc for both of them. HOWEVER, really don't like that they didn't make Sokka a sexist little boy. That was a really good arc for him in the anime. Additionally, Zuko was wayyyy to whiney in this show whereas in the anime, his angst manifests as anger and rage, Uncle Iroh is probably my favorite character in the entire show, and I did like Mr. Kim's (lol) adaptation, although I would have liked to see him act IDK...more wise? He's a difficult character to 'get right''. CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON (BOOK) 2!

I don't think Aang so much randomly chose to come out of the ice at that moment honestly, I think its more that Katara was trying to waterbend to bring the boat back, but not really knowing what she's doing managed to waterbend the ice behind her (watching her hands, the motions look more like she's tryna tear an apple in half so it'd make a lil sense why the giant ice ball to start cracking) instead of her voluntarily breaking the ice open
Idk, just seemed like it was caused by her tryna waterbend n not really knowing how to achieve what she wanted to, that being getting the boat back

The only thing I wish they did instead of Avatar Kyoshi the first Avatar who talks to Aang. I wish they use Avatar Kuruk and mentor Aang here in Book 1 on how to deal with the burden of being an avatar and gave ang a choice to walk his destiny or to choose to be selfish and runaway from his destiny
Parallel it with Aang learning to bend water and be like water who adapts and hold things together and deal with his emotional trauma
Then in book 2 comes Avatar Kyoshi almost same what shown in the show, that teach aang to be strong, to be firm, and to stand on what he believes
Parallel it with how Toph teach him how to bend earth and just like earth which is stable and strong, aang needs to be firm and be the symbol who gives substance and hope to people and stable that people can rely on
Then lastly Avatar Roku in book 3 which is very personal to Roku since it was his bestfriend who starts the war and mentor aang, on what choice he needs to take the moment the life of ozai was in his hand, here they can flesh out Aang's POV in the war, Aang's principle and morals
Which parallel to when he learns how to bend fire on the twin dragon and zuko and that as fire he needs to be compassionate yet aggressive when it needs be and respect life

4:58 Actually, Aang’s iceberg cracked open precisely when Katara was trying to waterbend in the _other direction_ (to bring the canoe back). I got the impression that her waterbending was misfiring and causing the iceberg to crack behind her, demonstrating just how powerful a waterbender she was but also how inexperienced and uncontrolled she was. I thought this was an easter egg reflecting what happened in the OG series, when she was ranting at Sokka and wound up cracking the glacier behind her, revealing Aang’s iceberg; also when she had to turn her back and blindly cast her icebending behind her to freeze enemy firebenders for the first time.

It looks like they got a lot wrong, mostly due to cutting corners on the plot, and the script/dialogue isn't great, but I think they got the looks of everything spot-on, and that's a huge plus. I can understand them wanting to drop the Aang love interest thing early-on, since he isn't even a teen yet. They'll probably bring it in next season, especially if we get a time-skip (which we should, considering how much arc they are losing).

The show is definitely good and it’s cool to see it all in live action. I think they did nail most of how the world and the characters look, keeping a lot of the spirit from the animation. But I must say that especially Katara is a massive let down for me. In the cartoon she was always a bit hysterical and short tempered but showed massive growth across the three seasons. In the remake she is just super calm and collected from the start and gives dreamy soft girl energy. Which definitely isn’t the actresses fault and her look definitely fits. Zuko was probably my favorite part, although he looks pretty different his acting is spot on. Aang and Sokka are pretty well done, although I feel like they’re both too mature from the start.
Who also majorly disappointed me was Iroh, bc he gave off crazy old grandpa vibes and not really the wise man he was in the original.
Which also bugged me is that they put Kyoshi so much in center, not because I don’t like her, but because I felt like they only did because they wanted to score some girl boss points, which felt pretty forced.
But still compared to the movie back then this is a masterpiece and I will definitely watch the following seasons just because it’s awesome to see the show brought to life!
