While I’m not zero waste, I’m always looking for ways to reduce my impact on the environment
*Natural deodorant recipe!*
1 part coconut oil
1 part potato starch or maizena/corn starch
1 part baking soda
I use the same recipe, just with corn starch, it works wounderful
Do you also keep it in a glass and how do you apply it?
Yes, it turns out just like in the video, somewhat coconut pasty, and I use my fingers to apply a pea-sized amount. Lasts long! :)
I keep it in an old Coconutoil jar, and every morning i scratch a tiny amount of it out of the jar and rub it on my armpits, it will have a sandy feeling for the first moment, but it's really decend and it will be gone after some minuts
Does it stain black clothing?
I actually would love to hear about sugaring. I've heard of it before, but i'm a little reluctant to try it out as i'm not sure how!
Madison Lyons there's plenty of videos on TH-cam in regards to that
Madison Lyons fullyrawkristina has one on it :)
It sounds like such an awesome zero waste alternative. I have personally stuck to laser though :P
im egyptian and we only use sugaring to remove body hair and its SO much better than shaving, it reduces the hair growth every time you do it + it leaves your skin soft
all women in the middle east use sugaring and have been using it for centuries. It's 100% natural and better than wax, and after years of using it, hair stops growing on your legs.
Tea tree oil helps to make a deodorant that last literally all day and then some. It kills bacteria which is what makes underarms smell so homemade is easy and possible
Hello. I'm from Argentina , and here almost every bathroom in every house has a water system for you to use instead of paper. And it has been like this for as long as my grandmother can remember (she's 80 years old). It really surprised me when I heard that houses in other places don't come with one 😮 (forgive my super bad English!)
Your english is great!! I know - unfortunately in the UK it is not part of our culture so there is a massive stigma towards them! Hopefully through social media we can change that xx
relatable
So when I was younger we always had a water system for (excuse me!!!) poo and tp for (wait for it!!!) pee. We would use a small plastic pitcher with a handle, which was left on the tank and before using the toilet you would fill it up in the sink, before seating yourself. Then after going about your business you would wash yourself with your non dominant hand while pouring a slow steady stream from the pitcher with your dominant hand. Dry off with some tp and you were all set. Not perfectly zero waste, but probably cheaper than installing a bidet. You could use a glass measuring pitcher instead of a plastic one, but plastic is lighter. Or maybe an aluminum pitcher? Anyways, sorry if this grosses anyone out, but I thought it could be a way to cheaply transition towards a complete zero waste toilet
tofumunch that’s actually incredibly helpful, I want to reduce my waste, and due to living in a rented property, I cannot install a bidet or water system. This pitcher idea is perfect, so thank you o much!!

Great video! I'm having a bit of difficulty at the moment trying to be more zero waste because I still live with my parents and sister and even though they understand why and that it's better for the world they aren't great with actually doing it. I can get really frustrated sometimes when they forget to bring their own bags, don't recycle everything they can, forget their keepcup etc. I'm happy they're trying though but I get bogged down with trying to be perfect! Thanks for the video!
I completely understand - I also find it super hard because I live with my sister who isn't vegan or zero waste which is hard for me to deal with. But I have made a conscious effort to take the 'work' out of a lot of things that we share like toilet paper or washing liquid etc. Try not to worry too much because you're doing the best you can and all you can do is help influence those around you without getting preachy (its hard I know) xx
@@SustainablyVegan so i had to go razor shopping at stop and shop so instead of buying a plastic razor i bought saftey razor the shave is so close no more plastic razor
I'm exactly the same only I have an older brother and I'm the youngest in the house so everything I say is all "ugh keep dreaming" or "we don't have money for that" and it's so annoying
I'm trying to change to zerowaste, all your tips helped me a lot thank you so much hugs from Mexico.
Ah I love Mexico so so so much!! Thanks for your comment
I got a safety razor with a bamboo handle that will be compostable. It works well. But I do suggest exfoliating your skin before and then you can use coconut oil as the shave oil. My legs never felt better.
Omg dreamy!! I'll check it out
I love what you stand for! I am new to the zero Waste, minimalist lifestyle. Making my own products as I finish up the previous products I bought before!
Thats great!
Hi! I like the way you introduced the video in a influential, rather than forceful manner. I also enjoy your editing and clips that you included. Have a wonderful day! :) Much love to your video and sustainability efforts.
For natural deodorant all I've done for the past few years is once I squeeze a lime, flip the peel inside out and rub it on my armpits and the follow with a bit of coconut oil and it's worked so well for me!
wow that's pretty cool!!
Same I've used lemon wedge and let it air dry;)
Mama Tea love ittttt, very effective and you smell like a pina colada :D
Brandless.com has toilet paper that is 100% tree-free and composed of sugarcane and bamboo. Highly sustainable and sugar cane is a byproduct of sugar production anyway so its a good use of that.. not to mention TREE-FREE!
Thanks so much for letting me know!!
Of course. (: it does come packaged in a thin plastic wrap but it's recycleable and the whole sustainable/tree-free thing trumps the wrapping for me, but I thought I'd add that in case you mind.
Can you make a video about zero Waste makeup? :0
moogle doggo YES! I would LOVE one like this
Sure thing!
!!!!
I don't bother to wear make up, i love being clean and well groomed and have comfortable clothes, but each to their own right? I still love it when people who wear make up want the vegan take on it. I just mean personally I prefer not to. XD
Hello! Do you have any sugetion for an eco-friendly pen? I'm a designer and I use a lot of pens. I already have two bamboo pens but I have finished the ink and now I can't find a way to reuse them because I can't find a refill that fits!
Vera Arandas Get a refillable fountain or ballpoint pen. The pilot metropolitan is pretty nice and affordable, you'll need an additional converter though. But with all that you can just buy bottled ink(in a glass jar) and it lasts for a looonng time and you can get a variety of colors and even waterproof inks. I hope this helped :)
+
Brooke Doyal Thanks! 😀😘
I use a Parker fountain pen and it is real easy to use. The ink bottle is glass, I am hoping that the pen shop near me will be able to refill if in the future
refillable pens or dip pens :)
that totoro in the background :----------)
Totoro 4 ever
@@SustainablyVegan i am gonna get a safety razor because my electric shaver finally fell apart time to become low waste
Have you ever heard about bidet? Every bathroom in Italy has It, we could probably do without toilet paper 😅
anna 07 I've heard of this. And I suppose this would keep one cleaner. But...I'd still want to dry off. So do Italians sit for 10 min to air dry? Or does a bidet include this? And electric isnt more sustainable or cheaper than TP...
you just use a small towel!
CJ Gatley if i’m correct, they don’t usually use electricity, you connect it to the water line.
here in portugal we also have bidets and they're really useful for when you just want to wash ur private parts or your feet. u wash them normally and then dry them with a small towel. im so used to them that im actually surprised when other people say they dont know about it 😅
@@kmundwiller3936 sometimes I want to wash my face, but idk how to dry it 😩
I find family cloth to be the most sustainable and skin friendly option. I think if people like the bidet system though that's great. You would still need some kind of cloth for drying afterwards and you want to be careful about keeping your skin dry to avoid the possibility of yeast developing anywhere (and not just vaginally) but a bidet doesn't travel easily unless you're using a plastic bottle which is one more large item to fit into your purse along an all the other zero waste stuff to carry. I turned to family cloth because I couldn't stand tp anymore, neither at home or in public washrooms. I've noticed from forums and such that most people who have tried family cloth feel like I do and would never go back to paper. The ones who kick up the most fuss at the mere mention of it have never even given it a go. In case anyone's interested, 2-ply flannel works the best. I got mine from Creekside Kid on Etsy and I love it - been using it for over a year and it washes up great. Concerned about stains? Dark colours are great for this. I use black myself. It's not as big a deal as it might sound and it's no different essentially from washing menstrual pads. A normal hot wash is all it takes. Hope that helps. Great video - tfs.
In the Middle East all toilets have a long braided connector/hose with a trigger spray attached to use instead of paper. It's attached to the cistern water supply. The cold water is a lot warmer there though :-):-) Hoping to have one fitted here in Manila so I can cut out paper again. x
Vera-Ann van den Berg I have this in my house, in the U.K.
My family are indian and it's common place to have a water system of some sort.
we have that here and honestly cant live without it
Rennae Nichols Paper production uses more water!
The plant cutting as a gift is so cute! I will definitely be utilizing this!
I've been sugar waxing my legs for the past two months now and I'm so glad I tried it. It only takes 1 cup of sugar each batch, and it doesn't take a whole batch usually so I just keep it in my fridge. And I hand wash and reuse the fabric strips! I feel so relieved to not be buying razor cartridges. I'm still using up the last of my razor cartridges I already had (I only really use it on my under arms), then I hope to switch to a safety razor as well!
Can I ask why you use fabric strips with it?
Sustainably Vegan I've had less luck with the hard wax method in terms of effectiveness. Partially because I have a hard time cooking it, I keep ending up with it being too hard or too runny lol
I love the judgement-free community you've created, the comments are filled with supportive comments and tips from other viewers, not debates about lifestyle choices and hateful messages that I've seen elsewhere, and I think that starts with your attitude. Every little bit counts and you are educating and supporting small choices that make big impacts that are simple enough to implement. I particularly like that you recognize that different cities have different options, and encourage people to do what they can with the resources that are available. Keep doing what you're doing :)
you seem to be so thoughtful and sweet. it's always a pleasure watching your videos! 💜
Aw thank you so much
Yay First!
For cleaning my bottom, I have the hygienna portable bidet. Yes, it is made of hard plastic, but I can take it with me anywhere I go. At home I afterwards wipe and dry myself off with a very soft small cotton cloth that I put in a container after I wipe that I spritz with my vinegar and soap mix that I use as bathroom cleaner. It keeps the bacteria from growing in the container until my next wash day. If I feel I need some extra cleaning down there in my bits I make a mix of olive oil, witch hazel, aloe Vera juice and a tiny bit of Castile soap and dab it on that clean cotton cloth. I feel very clean and it has cut down on any chafing that paper sometimes does cause. But I still buy some toilet paper for guests to use.
I love that Natural Deodorant brand! You can get the gentle version of their deodorant that doesn't have sodium bicarb in as that started to irritate my armpits after a while. It's so effective!!
Yas! I really like mine xx
Another option for hair removal is an epillator, they're expensive but they're so handy. The first time doing it hurts a lot but it's worth it. Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure to exfoliate (sugar and oil and such)
Love your zero waste swaps! We carry our Keep Cups everywhere :)
Yay! So do I!!
always so excited to see you've posted a new video!! love your channel
I would love to know what you think/know about bamboo clothing and items... because it all sounds really great in theory but I often wonder about it as it has become quite popular, how sustainable is it really!
Well apparently bamboo is more sustainable that things like organic cotton because it needs less water and is an incredibly fast growing plant - however I think buying anything new creates a demand which eventually becomes unsustainable because of all the resources and waste used...so however 'sustainable' I would still opt for second hand clothes and maybe only buy underwear /socks from bamboo?
I remember those shaving sticks. My father used them A LOT. Brings back memories. I might try them, but now, I reuse my plastic 4-blade sticks and rinse and spray with alcohol (vodka) right after use and keep them dry and reuse. Been using the same one for 4 months now. And I also use vodka as deodorant, so I spray after every armpit shave.
I use only pure sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda), bought in bulk on my wet skin, and it works so well!
I love your videos! Thanks for all your tips :) have you ever heard of family cloth? It's when you use reusable cloths as toilet paper and simply wash them with hot water every 2-3 days. Also, a video on sugaring would be quite lovely!
Quick thing about the safety razor is you can't take them in your carry on luggage so if you like travelling light you may need to go without shaving lol I don't mind the legs so much as the itchy Armpits! If you have an alternative could you make a Video about air Travel!?
If the country you are going to sells that razor you can buy it from there or use sugaring techniques while you are there. Also if you are travelling for a short period of time and you really want to shave maybe you could buy a plastic one? I know it's not zero waste but as long as this is the only waste you will produce on your trip i think it's ok ❤
Oh don't worry I am not precious about shaving - in fact I only really do it when I feel like I need to haha. I don't travel too often but when I do I wouldn't take it with me if I was only taking carry on luggage - obviously can take it if i'm putting it in the haul.
Normal razors arent allowed too.. Just put it into your luggage 😉
The tiny plant is adorable. 😊
OH MY GAUD YO VOICE IS SO CALMING AGHHHJFDJH
I loved this video!! The only thing I was only slightly concerned about was the deodorant. I read this about baking soda: "baking soda has a pH of 9, meaning it can strip all the good acid out of your skin, increase dryness, and end up causing your skin to overproduce oil". I also saw this comment about citrus oils on someone else's video and will paste it here: "I'm all about essential oils BUT citrus essential oils are photo-sensitizing (because of called called fuco-coumarins), meaning that they attack and burn the skin when exposed to sunlight. So you are using citrus essential oils, use them for your night cream, or do not expose your skin to the sunlight within 6 hours of applying your mixture. Most other essential oils are fine though". This one shouldn't be too much of a problem as you are only using this for your underarms (which probably won't be exposed to the sun very often), but I just thought I'd share in case you are using citrus oils for other DIY products!
I don't know how well it would work for your shaver/razor, but one of my favorite "hacks" to protect the blade (usually when traveling) is to place a binder clip over the blade. (I have kind of a small obsession with binder clip hacks 🤣)
Haha what else do you use them for?? xx
Nothing exciting 🤣 mostly things like "chip clips" (to keep food bags closed, like cereal, bags in the freezer, etc) and cords organised (either wound up and clipped to themselves, or clipped to other things to keep them in place) (I use one to keep my earbud cord nicely wound up so that it doesn't get tangled on itself).
Please don't stare yourself blind on sell by dates. As long as it doesn't smell or look weird it's probably okey to use. A lot of food and cosmetics things get thrown out daily that are perfectly okey to use. Just use common sense instead of sell by dates. A funny video about sell by dates, here you go th-cam.com/video/Z1rZAT2GtmI/w-d-xo.html
Love your videos :D keep em coming!
Thank youuuu 💕💕💕
Safety razor
Can you please link the glass cup? I really would like to get one. Thank you 🖤
It is a KeepCup! But you can get whatever brand you like! here is the link if you're interested xx uk.keepcup.com/?country=United%20Kingdom
You could use family rags. They are reusable cloth you use instead of toilet paper. You make them from things you would toss out like old shirts etc.
This deodorant sounds nice, the ingredients are exactly the same as the Trash is For Tossers recipe - me and my girlfriend bought the ingredients in bulk like a year ago and are still making it, it lasts sooo long, I would recommend just making it yourself when you run out! :)
That's awesome!! Yes I will definitely be making it when I'm done with this - its so nice and works really well so far!
in italy all toilets have a bidet, which is an oval shaped, tiny fountain. some people actually use it instead of toilet paper and it’s really useful imo
In the US there are tons of vintage safety razors that are in excellent condition
calendula?. If you said this it is a flower usually used in gardens.this kind of razors used my father and grandfather before the plastic ones appear. congrats!
I think she said candelilla - it is used a lot in make up that is vegan instead of for example beeswax. :)
I heard lots of people using bidet-sprayers! And little towells that then go into the washing machines
Thank youuu x
Love this! If you've ever tried sugaring I'd love to see a video on that. I always wax my legs and I'm sure I could just compost the cotton strips and the wax but I usually just throw it away 😕😕
Okey dokey!!
Sugar wax. You can wash and reuse the strips.
If you want a good natural waste free deodorant, lush has this amazing deodorant bar. I’ve been using it for years and it’s actually amazing. It’s a bar therefore there’s no plastic packaging and it’s SO GOOD, it actually WORKS and it’s so much better than you’re normal spray on/roll on beauty store deodorants. It was the first deodorant that lasted me all day and didn’t require re-application.The fact that it’s waste free is just a bonus.
Ahhhh! I clicked on this video so ridiculously fast 😱😂 This is amazing xx
When you said "shit" I nearly peed myself. I didn't expect that x
wellthatspretty
Same. I don't really mind though.
My favorite natural deodorant is Schmidt's!
Yes please do a video on the sugar wax! That’s very interesting
jist letting u know the plastic water system lasts longer or even rubber the stainless water hose system tends to break from the top
Did you get your razor with a closed or opened comb?
Im so obsessedwith your videos right now cause Im trying to go zero waste step by step and I love it! I just havent quite found the best way for my hair care routine. I did the no poo method about a year ago for 6 months but it didnt really work for my hair but I think I will try it again in a few months. I used hair soap but that didnt work out till now but I will still give it a go.
Would love to see a more detailed video on minimalism and consuming less! :)
Coming up!!
In past videos you’ve mentioned that your skin detoxed when you switched from aluminum to natural deodorants. What did that look like? Is there a way you recommend that someone can avoid that?
Do you sharpen the blades when they wear down or do you simply replace the razor blades? I've heard you can sharpen razor blades for safety razors using an old pair of jeans as a strop.
I have a question. Im recently trying to go all natural with cleaning and beauty products. But i still have some of my old chemicals. I know it would be wasteful not to use them. But i dont like the thought of them harming the environment. Should i dispose of the harmful chemicals or use them?
I love the k-cup, i have the previous one and took it with me in-flight so I don't need to use plastic or paper cups.
That deodorant sounds almost exactly like the one I make. Mine has bentonite clay in it in addition. I don’t use the wax. The only advantage of the wax is it means it won’t melt as easily. For travel I buy one that is almost identical to that one you bought. It doesn’t make a mess in my suitcase. Otherwise I totally love mine.
Hi Immy. I am binge watching all your old videos and loving every one of them. I wanted to ask you about the loo roll. I keep seeing it advertised now and was wondering how much cheaper it is compared to UK supermarket loo roll and is it a good option? I am a Surrey girl so not far from you I think.
With the safety razor blade, how do you dispose it when you can't use it anymore. Aren't some of them bio- degradable? Thanks & love your channel!
Maya Dunbar The razor itself will last you forever if you keep them clean. The blades you send them somewhere...idk.
What type of things can you put compost in? Sorry if that is a given question I just started wanting to do this
Not having a coffee is not fine! Ha ha just joking 😂
Just have a coffee at home. If you want anther coffee later sit in a nice bar and drink it in a porcelain mug. Idk why people want to have their coffee on the go.
I tried swapping to the Lush deodorant bar in an attempt to reduce waste. Now I'm trialing coconut oil as it always leaves me dry and itchy. So far a combination is proving nice but I'm hoping to take the next step. Also my university gives out free travel cups every year made from recycled gum. A bit gross but the top screws and its really handy.
I travel a lot and wonder if I could put the safety razor into my hand luggage when taking a flight, are they going to take away in the security control? Thanks! Loved your video, like always :)
I think I need to change my plastic razors soon! I really want to change it for a metal one. Could you tell me where you bought yours ? It seems really good quality 😊
Can you do a video on how to take care of the plants?
Will you show us what sugar thing you are referring to? Thank you! Love your channel!!
Definitely! Thanks for watching xx
What are the brands of the razor & the travel mug?
I haven't either found candelilla wax in bulk - I am gonna test using it to make vegan 'beeswax' wraps with (and I will post a video about it in the near future) I only found it for a decent price in really bad packaging so if anyone knows where you can order it in better packaging (and for an affordable price) let me know.
This is how we keep going back to buying the natural deos haha - hopefully without the wax my deo will still work!! I am going to also look for alternatives xx
Haha.. yes.. I have one with beeswax currently but the same brand makes vegan ones too will check what they have in their ingredient list. Also I have found this article really helpful in finding alternatives to beeswax and maybe also giving you some options to candelilla wax: www.vildamagazine.com/2016/05/vegan-beeswax-alternatives/
My favourite vegan one they have is called Sexy Sadie, and it seems like different butters (shea, cocoa) and clays would be doing the trick of candelilla/beeswax: www.routinecream.com/product-page/sexy-sadie-vegan-no-beeswax-1
If you live zero waste can you still buy things that are recyclable?
Yes of course! The ultimate goal is to buy nothing that comes in any packaging but it is a journey and recycling materials that can be fully recycled is a really great step ! x
I just purchased a KeepCup from Amazon and took it to class today. My instructor was literally DRAWN to it. I told him and everyone in the class, "Yes, I got this cup so I can eliminate my use of those coffee cups we get from the hotel." So someone goes, "OH but those are paper cups..." and then it was EDUCATION TIME! Needless to say, I think about 4 people in class purchased a KeepCup after class. #zerowaste #sharingiscaring
I really want to try Who Gives a Crap toilet paper, however, they don't ship to Hawaii. Talk about being bummed out! I really wish they would ship to Hawaii, especially since Hawaii beaches are the insanely oversaturated with trash and plastic and waste. :(
If you are interested in making your own eco-friendly zero waste deodorant check this recipe!
th-cam.com/video/-BUYRsLjdd8/w-d-xo.html
you only need two ingredients and is super cheap!
Thanks so much!!
If you want to fill up a bottle and put it next to the toilet (a glass bottle ofc)
From the channel AUTHENTIC AND HAPPY gives a Amazon link for water system for a replacement for toilet paper
How is the deodorant packaging zero waste? What is the lid made of?
I would like to switch to a bidet but I am worried about reviews that talk about the systems leaking or damaging the floor. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I have been using the “who gives a crap” toilet paper and I have found the basic one is a little bit harsh so personally I don’t mind paying a bit extra for the premium one. If anyone was interested just a review on it .
Is the razor open or closed comb?
could you tell me the ingredients of the natural deodorant, i'm also interesting in making some for myself!
is the razor an open or closed comb one? : )
Could you please please please make a video on the sugaring hair removal thing? I have a morbid fear of razors so any other method of hair removal is much welcomed
would you consider making a video about plants please? I have some (invalid) succulents and would like to purchase an aloe vera but it would be great to get some basic tips so that I do not kill it. Thanks.
Just found your channel and wanted to say hi 👋 I’m also vegan and trying to be as low waste as possible. I’m on a mission to get other people to cut out single use plastics. Your videos look great!
What was the glass thing with the cork??
Where did you buy your safety razor?
Here's a video about family cloths by The Fairly Local Vegan as well! th-cam.com/video/QyKnnioHtWw/w-d-xo.html
:( wheres the subtitles ?
Hey! Thank you for sharing. I would like to know more about that sugar method for shaving, never heart about it before. Thanks!! :)
you've got a cute little totoro buddy! thanks for these tips. I've been interested in some new deoderant, too. does it bother you to apply it with your hands? and iv been really thinking about switching to that razor! I hate disposable and plastic razors.
Absolutely not - after all its my body and I love my body :)
I tried a lot of them but unfortunately was smelling 🙈 Try to use Alum, it's natural salt stone and it last for like 5 years. But most important it really works. X
For those that sweat a lot, does natural deodorant really work?
Which shop in London do you go to?
I'm hoping one day I can move onto making my own beauty products (tooth pate, deodorant, moisturiser etc) and also planting my own fruit and veg. But for now its just not doable, so I'm getting all my beauty stuff from Lush. x
Question what do you mean by water system for the bathroom
would you be so kind to tell us where you bought the razor or by what company it is?
instagram.com/muehle_rasurkultur/?hl=en
thanks! funny story. I just found out that my boyfriends grandfather already used this brand decades ago. so you can be sure that this company will last and you can get their blades for years to come 👍👍
That's awesome!!
Beginner with these..do you want a closed comb or open for legs and armpits?
Those razor blades can be re sharpened. And used many more times. Its a skill to sharpen tools but absolutly worth while!
