  • Most Horrifying Piano Music - Liszt "Der Doppelgänger"
    Franz Schubert / Franz Liszt "Der Doppelgänger" from the Schwanengesang
    Still ist die Nacht, es ruhen die Gassen,
    In diesem Hause wohnte mein Schatz;
    Sie hat schon längst die Stadt verlassen,
    Doch steht noch das Haus auf demselben Platz.
    Da steht auch ein Mensch und starrt in die Höhe,
    Und ringt die Hände, vor Schmerzensgewalt;
    Mir graust es, wenn ich sein Antlitz sehe, -
    Der Mond zeigt mir meine eigne Gestalt.
    Du Doppelgänger! du bleicher Geselle!
    Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
    Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle,
    So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?
    Heinrich Heine's Buch der Lieder (1827)

      "The night is quiet, the streets are calm,
      In this house my beloved once lived:
      She has long since left the town,
      But the house still stands, here in the same place.
      A man stands there also and looks to the sky,
      And wrings his hands, overwhelmed by pain:
      I am terrified - when I see his face,
      The moon shows me my own form!
      O you Doppelgänger! you pale comrade!
      Why do you ape the pain of my love
      Which tormented me upon this spot
      So many a night, so long ago?"
      Now you know what the piece is about

    Doppelgänger means “double walker” in German. Old legends from the country tell of an eerie phenomenon where a person who is about to die will see an exact replica of themselves from a distance away of perhaps behind a wall or shop window. Their identical reflection would often in the legends be scowling or sneering. In some legends the Doppelgänger will proceed to stalk its victim for an undetermined period of time from afar until their living self perished, often from illness, tragic accidents, or being murdered at the hands of people they pissed off earlier in the story, spurred on by the sinister magic of the Doppelgänger. In this way the Doppelgänger was a symbol of the inescapable clutches of death and fate.

    this feels like a piece on losing a loved one. there are moments when the tone lifts a bit which makes me feel like the composer was thinking about happy memories with this person. then, it fades into utter sadness and helplessness, the feeling that they cant make anymore memories together. then the part where the pace picks up and becomes incredibly intimidating, anger and fear, the feelings they get when a loved one is snatched away from them. and then.....it drifts back into the bitter sweet sound.

      I’ve sung this piece before- you’re very close in the interpretation. The story follows the speaker as he is walking through a town he used to live in with his now lost loved one. Eventually he finds himself in front of his old house he used to live in with his love. In the climax of the piece, he sees his doppelgänger in the window, seemingly taunting him. In anguish the speaker asks the doppelgänger why he taunts him with these memories as he remembers back to the times he had with his love which are now long gone. It is a very interesting piece of lied

    It actually makes sense to call this piece scary, unlike the fury of the Queen of Night's aria or the prosaic, academic B-horror Tocatta and Fugue in D minor. This is the more cosmic type of horror embodied in Scriabin's Sixth Sonata or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

    This reminds me of a young child. They were never allowed to be a child, they were always forced to be mature. As they get older, this has affected their mentality in a bad way, and then they become more irritable and negative during adolescence. Near the end, they grieve for their lost childhood and realize that anger won't do them anything, and come to terms with the fact that this is their life now. Given up.

By the way, these cords bear an uncanny resemblance with the main theme in Nathalie Cardone’s song ’Hasta siempre’, no? or the other way around, rather ̂..

    I don't feel the "horrifying" part. There is a fear but I hear it as more of a fear of what's to come. It's more melancholic i feel like.
    The way I visualize this is I see a man in the dysropic ruins of his home city, seeing all of what he knew is now but dust and rubble. He walks through the decrepit memories of the lost past, but than he stops and puts himself back together and he rises from his tragedy, looking forward he walks on, ready to face what destiny has in store.
    Now that I typed this down I see that it's indeed very horrifying. Horrifying, melancholic and determines. But that's just my way of seeing things.
    Great great piece of music.
