    And it seems in many schools, teachers suffice themselves with teaching you how to solve a problem without telling you why that works. And I personally believe retention is better attaned when one nows why something works just as much as when they learn how to do the something.

    We have to prove that except that we also have to prove the triangles similar.

      Heres a typical math textbook answer: The triangles similarity is trivial/easy to see/obvious/immediate. So the proof wasn't mentioned

    how did you know to add a² = cd and b² = ce? adding those two equations seems totally arbitrary to me and i don't understand why.

    • @mrosty8930
      @mrosty8930 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Simple answer is: we want to prove a² + b² = c² . So it makes sense to sum a² and b² to see what it equals to. But what if you dont know the formula already? Part of the mathematician's job is to notice certain patterns, and then *conjecture* a general statement to then try to prove it. In the case of the pythagorean theorem. The relationship a² +b² = c² was known to work for a lot right triangles, and sure enough it was proven to be true for *all* of them

  • @anyarendahl9958

      Given: ABC is an arbitrary right triangle, with sides a b, and c being the opposite side of the right angle. What was proven: a² + b² = c²

    this is not a prove this is a example that shows the assumption is correct. prove should be showing how it is possible and why is it . Pythagorean theorem is still one theory that has no prove just like PI.

    • @thenawabgaming

      Let there be a right triangle with sides of length a, b and c with c being the hypotenuse, then it holds that a^2 + b^2 = c^2.
      Proof.
      The one in the video since it can be applied to any right triangle.
      I think you don't understand the way mathematical proofs work
