I still have it, I often wondered if it was the only copy in Scotland. Watching more of the video, great to see other bands I loved at the time, Victims, GOD, Beasts of Bourbon and the band that started my love of Aussie bands.. The Saints. I bought that album in 1979, long after its release, but I played it to death, my copy is now very worn, but much loved.🎸

G Day Mike. Australia is the land of punk! A smorgasbord of punk delights for the ears I need to get something from GOD just so I can say it when I show it using the proper Aussie pronunciation. Slave Girl is such an incredible song. The first two Lime Spiders albums were awesome. The third made me move on. I have the first Stem album, it is a must for a proper 80s record collection. Thanks mate. Putting AC/DC on this list has put a few noses out of joint so I'm glad to hear you were on board. I'm not saying they're punk, but just that them Motorhead, early Iron Maiden & a few other heavy bands couldn't help but be directly or indirectly influenced by the raw no frills approach of punk and they made music oin line with that way of thinking. Love Mini Skirt, don't have any Stiff Richards (unfortunately) & C.O.F.F.I.N. as of yet I haven't been able to get into. Cheers...Ben
Great stuff, Ben! Urban Dictionary definition of Punk “You don't need a Misfits, Casualties, Sex Pistols or any band like that jacket to be punk. You don't need anything to be punk except for awareness, self respect, respect for others and an open mind.” On my all time favorite Punk songs doesn’t sound anything like the “Punk Rock” songs of those bands. Hi Ben. I'm one of the 'old fuckers' you referred to earlier. As X are one of my favourite bands, and I saw them many times over the years, I'd just like to correct you on one point you made. Ian Rilen isn't the main vocalist for the band. Steve Lucas, the guitarist, is the singer. You also mentioned Mick Blood's 'paint peeling' voice. I think Steve has him covered. Maybe not as melodic but I doubt many vocalists could match his power.. Injteresting post. Thanks.
Oh shit did I say that? I probably still had Ian Rilen on the brain because I brought up Rose Tattoo in one of these videos. I should have got that right sorry as I even saw a version of X in the 90's with Cathy Green and Steve was singing right in front of me🤦♂ We all hope to get to be old fuckers because it's better than being dead fuckers. Do you know if they'll ever do another? How did I not know the Bird Blobs? This stuff is hard to find, might have to track down Tim Evans, ha. I think the first self-titled Birthday Party album is underrated, still my fave. I guess you coulda picked I'm stranded, Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds as the three best full length albums, although the last branches out a bit.. But it is terrific! Here is my review of their debut from my article on the 15 beat punk albums. .I’m) Stranded: The Saints. Released February 27, 1977. The Saints first appeared in Brisbane, Australia in 1973. The four members were high school buddies living under a heavily conservative state government. There is a post on TH-cam with only fair sound of them playing a gig in 1974 in punk style. (The similarities between The Saints and Ramones are striking. Both were serving up punk in 1974 and both recorded three great albums in a row with their original line-ups before personnel changes.) After being rejected by every label in Australia they released "I'm Stranded" bw "No Time" on their own Fatal label in September 1976, the remarkable single actually reaching #96 on the Aussie charts. It was re-pressed on British labels and got rave reviews. Sounds magazine called it "Single of this and every week." Jon Savage wrote about the 45 "...the toughest, most brutal noise yet. The Saints' "(I'm) Stranded" sounded as though it had been recorded in a wind tunnel, with the singer and the rhythm section hanging as gusts of guitar noise rushed past them." For a very short time they were the darlings of the fledgling punk world and with the wind at their back they recorded their classic debut album, (I'm) Stranded, in just two days in Australia. Ten marvelous songs filled with surging waves of buzz-saw guitar and superb musicianship, "('m) Stranded" is a classic of the genre. What a racket they served up, much of the lyrics indecipherable under the noise. Singer Chris Bailey barks out songs filled with alienation. bitterness and resentment as in the title song. "Like a snake calling on the phone/I've got no time to be alone/There is someone coming at me all the time/Babe I think I'll lose my mind/'Cause I'm stranded on my own/Stranded far from home/I'm riding on a midnight train/And everybody looks just the same/A subway light it's dirty reflection/I'm lost I don't have a direction/Chorus/ Look at me looking at you/There ain't a thing that I can do/You are lost, your mind is a whirl/Baby such a stupid girl/Chorus/ Livin' in a world insane/They cut out some heart and some brain/'Been filling it up with dirt/Do you know how much it hurts?/Chorus". There's not a dud on the album. Plenty of fast punk as well as ballads like "Messin' With The Kid" and mid-tempo songs like "Story Of Love" are all beautifully rendered. Ed Kuepper, guitar, Kym Bradshaw, bass and Ivor Hay, drums, are one blitzing force. The Saints second album, Eternally Yours, adds horns on some songs and, no joke, is just as good as the debut. Their third LP, Prehistoric Sounds, finds them leaving punk for a more bluesy, jazzy sound, but believe me it is terrific too. None of these albums were big commercial successes; the lads did not fit in with the punk image. The snobby British press did not like their long hair, Bailey's sloppy appearance (he sometimes smoked a cigarette on stage) and the fact they did cover songs didn’t help. But Nick Cave has said, "They were kind of god-like to me and my colleagues. They were just always so much better than everybody else. It was extraordinary to go and see a band that was so anarchic and violent." And Sir Bob Geldof has stated " Rock music in the 70's was altered by three bands: Sex Pistols, The Ramones and The Saints."
@@willieluncheonette5843 I could’ve but I was trying to fit in more bands. Great review. That’s what I love about the early Saints they progressed & tried to incorporate different sounds. I’ve always wondered what a 4th album with that lineup would’ve been like. Cheers…Ben

Where to begin - awesome showcase, sir. The Beasts of Bourbon brought to mind another snakey, bluesy punk lp from that era that really needs a reissue (along with everything by BoB): Hugo Race & The True Spirit: Rue Morgue Blues. My favorite of his. Cosmic Psychos are gods. Custom Credit distills the wordage of Race's title track nicely: "you drove me up the wall: I ain't no spoy-dah!".
I have and also love Gold Street Sessions and Earl's World. I bought the one with Dope Fiends on it just for that song . After Rue Morgue blues he must have upped his tobacco intake to Leonard Cohen levels - his voice, like the later Cohen's went from energetic and, well normal, to all smoky and raspy - which suits him (as it did Cohen) well. And back to psychosis, and your Mudhoney/Knight ref: You may have seen this video, but just in case (not a Pearl Jam fan, but Eddie Vedder seens pretty cool and can tell a good story. Great to see the second part. Brings back mostly good memories.
Lubricated Goat, The Stems, Hard Ons, Lime Spiders, Beasts, Birthday Party, Scientists, Gurus all very much my era. LG played at my 21st along with a bunch of other bands.
Saw the Rifles a few times back then. And saw the Hitmen and quite possibly the Lipstick Killers at paddo town hall, when I was at school, but I was probably more into Ed’s Laughing Clowns and the Sydney Msquared records bands then , as well as newcomers like the Eastern Dark, Spy v Spy and the Allniters. There were just so many great bands to see as well as touring OS acts.
My sis saw the recent Birdman Tour and was well impressed
Good call I thought on Prayers on Fire, it deserves a place at the top. Great set of tunes. My poor mum, she put up with most of our music but those first 2 Birthday Party albums were a bit much for her.

G Day Mike. Australia is the land of punk! A smorgasbord of punk delights for the ears I need to get something from GOD just so I can say it when I show it using the proper Aussie pronunciation. Hi Ben. I'm one of the 'old fuckers' you referred to earlier. As X are one of my favourite bands, and I saw them many times over the years, I'd just like to correct you on one point you made.
The Saints' "(I'm) Stranded" sounded as though it had been recorded in a wind tunnel, with the singer and the rhythm section hanging as gusts of guitar noise rushed past them."
For a very short time they were the darlings of the fledgling punk world and with the wind at their back they recorded their classic debut album, (I'm) Stranded, in just two days in Australia.

@@benrankins4446 Wow, I have been warned about the Hard Ons and In the Raw. Oddly, i am curious now... I can't sell the records! Not Rush! Certain Genesis could go, but they are worth nothing 😔
@@EmbryonicRobot Don't say I didn't warn you 😂Keep Straightjacket fits and maybe just sell the Rush albums recorded before Geddy's voice broke.
@@benrankins4446 Still probably can't do it!
@@EmbryonicRobot Play Eddy Current back to back with Rush and let the spirit guide you.
So many great bands, but no VEEBEES. Sad!
@@shoeydoo8927 Can’t have ‘em all 👍
Why No Grong Grong????
@@MrNeiltonoman An easy question to answer…because I don’t have it 👍
@@benrankins4446 Fair enough. Have you heard it?
@@MrNeiltonoman I actually haven’t. I’m not sure why I missed them. I’ve had a lot of comments mentioning them. I’ve had a look on Discogs & their stuff seems hard to get & pricey!
cosmic psychos can't come in off the debut album fire!
I'm not sure what you mean, but I think you're basically saying Cosmic Psychos rule which I completely agree with 👍
Good to see that the Saints stand the test of time, without that bullshit attitude that makes so many bands into pariahs just because they become popular or well known. But we all know that punks have too much integrity for that silly mind game :-).
The first 3 Saints records all hold up to me. They were a bit different to the other punk bands which is part of the reason I love them so much. They were even outside of the outsiders 😂 Cheers...Ben
@@benrankins4446 Yup - My 14yr old son (better late than never) is currently in his first band, and most saturdays I pick up one of the lads too. I'm planning a dose of ""I'm Stranded" at the loudest I can set it without them complaining (poor Gen Z - they've taken seriously the lessons about too loud makes you deaf) I think I can get them At LEAST thru Stranded, One Way St and Wild about you. Today's lesson is about sharp ringing notes and constant squeal from the lead guitar.
Where did you place Ed? Laughing Clowns would have to be one of my all-time favourite aussie bands too - something about the "not-quite-finished" sound of so many Clowns tracks makes them so very special. Chris, on the other hand got soft and nearly wrote pop for a while there.
@@andrewclarke4902 Good to hear the youth are getting an earful of the good stuff 👍
I’m like you I followed Ed & not Chris. I have maybe 4 Chris Saints albums, but I reckon I’d have close to all of Ed’s solo, Laughing Clowns & Aints stuff. Ed & Rowland S Howard are probably my two favourite guitarist of all time. Cheers…Ben
Most of these are not a fun listen. Old mates not really into a chorus. Thanks for the video it's a good history lesson.
These are all fun listen or otherwise I'd be talking about the Beatles or Van Morrison. Don't what you're on about. Cheers...Ben
Ian Rilen didn't do the vocals on the X album. That was Steve Lucas. One of the only records I like out of your selection. When you called the Cosmic Psychos 'yob rock', you were closest to a definition for nearly all your 'taste'. X, the Saints, one or two others, might make my list. All too butch and stupid. You do realise there are songwriters who make interesting melodies and witty lyrics?
What a surprise that a person that doesn’t produce any content would troll someone. Go back to your mum’s house & beat off together over your AOR & MOR mediocre taste…BTW I know I made a mistake about X because I had someone who actually has some manners point it out to me in a constructive way. Fuck off or make a video to be judged Ike everyone else 🖕
