Thank you for posting this video! This has helped me understand a lot about optic nerve atrophy and what test to perform depending on whether or not patient really does have optic nerves atrophy. As I am a thirty-year-old with retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma and a cataract in my left eye, in the year of 2021 I had a then stand plays unfortunately it became blocked with scar tissue a month later then because of my glaucoma was not responding that well to Max treatment I had to have my cataract removed and a trabectome performed to keep my pressure lower which has worked well but now my doctor suspected optic nerve atrophy at my last doctor's appointment. This video has helped me understand about optic nerve atrophy and how to tell whether or not I'll take care of it. Your fee is really occurring or my optic nerves just looks atrophied due to optic nerve inflammation. I love medical and learning more about the body definitions and also knowing medical terminology for diagnosing and also treatments and causes of certain eye problems so thank you very much for posting this video! Thas taught me something new today in regards to optic nerve atrophy.

Dr. Lee explains well. He diagnosed me a couple of years ago with bilateral optic atrophy. My vison has been stable but I get where I have an episode of darkness 1 eye at a time but not at the same time... and top of head will hurt bad...about 15 minutes for an episode... then the vison changes. The episode has happened 2 times in 2 years. So I am having follow ups on progession. Over the last few years I no longer am a correctional Sgt. because I need to rely on my eyes in this field of work. I am in transition and its a life changer. All I can say is if you are like me and have been diagnosed keep following up to check for changes and start learning some new things about being vision impaired so you will be prepared when it hits. I have been decluttering and I have a ton of lamps to give me extra light for at night it is really hard to see. Wishing you all the best and keep up on those progression followups.

Thank you for a clear explanation. My daughter had an eye exam this morning and the doctor saw pale optic nerve. She is 7 months corrected age and was born at week 24. What additional tests should we do to understand the impact on full vision? Thank you.

You forgot to mention the Traumatic Optic Atrophy (Secondary Glaucoma or eye trauma etc...) since it can happen Unilateral and Bilateral

is it possible to have relatively normal RNFL OCT but marked thinning in ganglion cell layer in optic atrophy? will this indicate a retinal cause leading to optic atrophy?

I don’t think that it’s reversible. I lost a lot of my eyesight because of a brain tumor, and the doctors told me that optic atrophy is irreversible. I’m sorry.

my kid (16 years old) got diagnosed with this recently and has a opa1 gene mutation , his vision now is 20/40. how fast does this progress? how bad will it get? the doctor recomended he studied and got a job that didnt rely on vision as much, and that he probarbly wouldnt be able to read at all in aproxemately 10 years time, whats your thoughts about this?

I have the gene. I have 20/50 with contacts and 20/800 without. I can read and can still drive a car during the day. Many people in my family this.
