I literally had to slow down the video to count his 7, 4, 5 note phrasing. He nails it.
You must listen to Quennel Gaskin, one of the greatest gospel\jazz pianists in nowdays with crazy skills like Cory Henry. He can play any style he want, he can play stride like crazy with fastest 10th in the left hand, he can play bebop lines easely, crazy reharms, his chord technics are dope, he can play organ like crazy, funky stuff, he plays all gospel styles like a god, musically and technically at the same time with dope speed in both hands. And he is humble guy.
The jazz world should know this guy. He's very underrated.
Agree. I love Quennel.
This is the first young musician of the social media age, who has a sense of space, relaxation, suspense and the first one who doesn't show off all the time. Very good.
'... and the first one who doesn't show off all the time ' Sorry, Jesus Molina.

Well said
Peter and Adam, I have had the pleasure of hearing Jahari on many occasions at MSM. He was a wonder to behold! I also attended the Herbie Hancock International Jazz Piano Competition semi-finals. I saw all eleven pianists. There was not a bad one in the bunch . I believe what made Jahari different was he did Jahari. The other semifinalists gave the judges what they thought the judges wanted. Jahari presented Jahari and a glimpse of what is to come in the future of Jazz piano. Peter, please drop in on live streams from MSM, Juilliard, NYU, Frost, WMU and perhaps Temple University as a way of keeping current or perhaps at the crest of the wave of what is to come .
I love this!!! Jahari is a phenomenal musician and beautiful human!!! We are sooooo proud of you dear heart!!!
Great jazz pianists at that Hancock competition included Joe Block, Caelan Cardello, Esteban Castro, Dabin Ryu, and Jenny Xu. Check them all out as well as Connor Rohrer and Paul Cornish.
I hear that Micah Thomas was just unable to leave tour to participate. His presence would have been amazing too.
I saw Jahari live in Oakland and he's awesome. Such a nice guy and an incredible musician. Can't wait to hear more of what he creates!
I just checked out Jahari’s album upon seeing this podcast. His music is beautiful!
Me too! Just checked out this:

I just love it!
7 notes on each chord, then change chord, 4 notes on the next chord, 5 on the next. with that as the time signature as well. ie., 7 notes over the EM7, 4 over the G#m9, 5 over the Bsus. Try your own patterns. whoa. Thanks for sharing.
He plays on derrick hodge last lp..the color of noise.... love him...
man.. I love this Jahari, thank you for introducing him
The production values on the intro: Gold
16:30, left hand 11th, you almost never see that .....
Jahari shouldn’t have even been in the contest. Absolutely no disrespect to the other great musicians but if you’ve listened to this kid enough, you understand he’s a genius, it’s almost autistic like. I personally think he’s light years ahead. If you have time take a listen to his interview w/ Sean Wilson where he talks about one day becoming obsessed with the piano and how it worked-He first referred to piano keys as “buttons”. This kid is truly on another planet.
Good episode. I didn't know who this was. Jahari Stampley? Did I get that right? If not, I'll come back and change this. Thanks for bringing his playing to our attention.
27:15 Me, too, buddy... me, too
31:15 that's on the list now too
I just realized, in the thumbnail for this vid, he's wearing a baja and holding a melodica and a campfire shawarma, and seems to have a lamb in a headlock. If he was a Hindu deity, then what would this collection represent? The mantra is "DAMN"... maybe it's a seed syllable.
Don't change it - it's perfect. Im not being sarcastic about that.
I want to see videos of him performing at the competition
Sounds like Sun Ra!
Next video: Is Oscar Peterson the LeBron James of Jazz?
Yes. And Tatum is Michael Jordan.
Jazz fan 1: "Dude, Peterson had a much longer career, made far more records with far more collaborators, won more awards, won wider recognition, and was probably more well-rounded as a player."
Jazz fan 2: "All that's true, but Tatum still had a greater mastery of the instrument. And Peterson is the first to admit that."
Peterson is still the only one you can compare to Tatum. And that, is quite an accomplissement.
I heard Larry Bird is starting a young jazz pianist dunk contest.
🤣
This dude Anatole Muster is wild 🧙♂️ peep his stuff
Yep
I look forward to the Downbeat awards to see people I haven’t heard about and look them up on TH-cam or the internet.
Chicago musician influences
Honestly this is the typical good church musician. We do this all the time lol. It's funny to see you all studying it. It is advanced though when you try to break it down. Honestly this is common amongst church musicians though. Much love. Yall are some beast. lol
The first stuff wasn't quite my cup of tea, but the Amazing Grace... yes, I liked that very much.
I want to see jahari and cory play together
Adam Neely who? 10:08
Chicago
Half these self taught geniuses can’t teach for toffee. They are truly amazing but can’t create a curriculum or explain their genius.
Often berklee basically let them run a mock running through halls oozing notes. The music professors have to take a different approach to getting the best out of em. There are some exceptions. Oscar Peterson a taught genius though. Errol garner another one who couldn’t teach. Theres a very thin line in free jazz from being fooled to truly authentic harmony understanding of chords and music telepathy to enter herbie jazz competitions. Clearly jahari has done his 10,000 hours by virtue of natural genius shortcuts seeing music as buttons or colours, its other worldly.😂
Downtown manhattan scene is what the people want.
please make these an hour
Quick trip to space lmao
Is he really a "self-taught" pianist? It seems like he's got a strong gospel influence which is transmitted through traditional pedagogical methods; sitting in, mentorship etc.

as self-taught as you can be growing up in a musical household lol
How about guys like Christian Sands, Emmet Cohen, Kris Bowers?

fun fact, the 2nd highest wave of the covid pandemic was in jan 2024
That 7-4-5 explanation was kind of nonsensical tbh despite his obviously fast and effective gospel-style chops.
yeah, that is way too idiosyncratic to be pedagogical. ha.
There is something about these players that seem 'off' to me. And I cant quite put my finger on it. Its like.... They sound great, but something very important is missing with these gen x players. I'm feeling like the touch is too robotic or much like old roland & yamaha built-in keyboard demos.. I dunno..
Jahari Stampley musician ? Bullshit, I went to listen thinking I was going to listen to something really good and all I heard was an hysterical kid, who's musical narrative is completely incongruent. I can't see the merit and I think the musicians are "loosin' it" by the reality of having no live and no audiences. Amazing unoriginal grace, so many wrong choices and notes, again, if he approached it, say, like Keith Jarret solo playing "Over the Rainbow", it would still be worthy, but this ? give me a break. I am waiting to see the day, when you guys pay homage, to a real monster of an artist like Cecil Taylor, or Nina Simone, true originals.
Can't think of a more annoying song than Amazing Grace outside of the Birthday song
There's nothing annoying about God's amazing grace.
