When Joan Jett recorded the title track to I Love Rock ’N’ Roll, which was a cover version of a song originally released in 1975 by the British band the Arrows, little did she know that this pagan battle cry would in time earn her status as one of rock’s most iconic figures.
Upon its release in 1982, the song stayed at Number One on the Top 100 chart for seven weeks and has since been named Billboard’s 56th greatest rock song of all time.
Now, more than three decades later, Joan is still rockin’ hard, and rock and roll is still alive and well. In this extended edition of In Deep, we’ll examine the roots of true rock and roll guitar and its essential, foundational elements that were chiseled into stone by the style’s founding father-the immortal Chuck Berry-the man whose playing would inspire and inform many of the world’s greatest rock bands, from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to AC/DC.
One of the small handful of records regarded as the “first” rock and roll song is “Rocket 88,” recorded in March 1951 by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats. Brenston was actually a horn player and singer in guitarist/keyboardist Ike Turner’s band, the Kings of Rhythm, and he is credited with writing “Rocket 88.”
roduced by Sam Phillips in Memphis and released on the Chess label, “Rocket 88” went straight to Number One and it’s incredible success enabled Phillips to launch Sun Records.

Rocket 88 is certainly early rock and roll but Goree Carter recorded Rock Awhile in 1949 which has Chuch Berry type playing six years before Berry's earliest recordings. Goree Carter even had a bit of distortion going compared to T Bone Walker who played some pre-rock and roll kind of licks.
Goree Carter's Rock Awhile is probably the best candidate for "first ever" rock and roll song.

Tooo BaD the world couldn't just learn how to sit around playing guitar or some sort of instrument and dance play some music and like smoke weed and stop al this rioting and burning and covid 19 and hating on each other. The world needs to get high!! like the whole world. But like the songs says, "Everybody wants to rule the world" The "rulers" decimate all the regular folk out of a normal existence! whew!!! Anyhow Double A.A. has great guitar lessons. People need to learn interest, knowledge, and TRUE virtue and a fuckn hobbie. No escape from daily frustrations leads to an angered society.

Nightmonkey13 It's the Jimi Hendrix guitar that had just came out. Notice the different position of the bridge pick up as it would be on a right handed guitar that was flipped over to play left handed.

Long live Rock and Roll, Andy gives you the foundation that it was all built on. If Elvis was the King, then Chuck was the Emperor or Godfather. He sang ,wrote, and played with great showmanship and broke many barriers. Almost every great guitar song or solo has a Chuck Berry style riff in it somewhere!
