I believe that the prototype of the locomotive was built by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway in 1874. Its original number was 68 (later renumbered to 668) and it was originally named "Clapham". It seems to have been sold to the LSWR in 1903. Must admit that I don't know what the Terriers the LSWR bought were used for.
