Fastest sub to a new channel in a long while, absolutely love Owen's vibe!! Also, I would be so here for making all the content live, even if I will probably end up being team replay because of timezones. You nail the casual live vibes 🤩
One time I was looking for booktube channels in a french reddit thread (cause I speak french), and someone recommended "the network of the fantastic nutt", it took me sometime to realize that it was a word-to-word translation. Anyway, I propose "the fantastic nuttwork" for the rebranding.
Hey Jimmy I’ve been watching Owen for maybe 18 months now and he truly is an underrated gem! Thanks for having him on!! Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend. For what it’s worth you’re one of few booktubers who actually makes me put my phone away and read more and anything that has me less on my phone is a huge win. So thank you very much for that!! 🫡
Apropos Nora Roberts. Janny Wurts was asked about good romance books and she recommended Carnal Innocence by Nora Roberts. She said it's extremely well written. I love off the wall recs like that by people I trust (you included oc :)) Planning on reading it soon. Sounds kind of spicy, too :D
I read Urth after rereading the first four. Really enjoyed that approach. So I had the satisfaction of figuring out some stuff I missed by myself. Because he explains some mysteries in Urth, but at the end of it you're still as mystified as after 1-4 ;D which I like! I'd definitely recommend reading Urth, though, it's great and makes the whole story even better imo.
Congrats on visiting Europe. It has been intresting to note people suprised at the amount of bookstores. I have never been to the US so I cannot compare. However it is such a cool image to see crowds of people waiting outside the doors to a 4 story library and once the doors open they are storming in excited to read. Also Owen is right poetry was an olympic event Spoken word also was one
Glad you enjoyed your time in Dublin, Jimmy! I’ve got family there and love it every time. I love the Irish culture, particularly the humour. They don’t take themselves too seriously and I’ve found are very welcoming. I’ve never gone book shopping in Dublin though, where would you recommend?
On ASOIAF being Jimmy’s favourite series (same here!), it makes a lot of sense that people’s #1s tend to be Tolkien, Martin, Sanderson, etc: There is just so much more content and community around these megahits that smaller authors don’t have much of a chance. You can read Stormlight and then go deep on 17th Shard podcasts, or read Malazan and binge every Erikson interview. If you’re into some random fantasy series-even if it’s just as good as these big names-it’s so much harder to get to that deeper level of fandom. Maybe there’s a few BookTube reviews and a theorycrafting Reddit post from six years ago, but if you want to dive deep you’ll have to do the hard work yourself. That’s not to say this is a bad thing. The communities around big series are incredible, it’s just (if you’re a BookTube watcher and online person, at least) that they’re also inextricable from the reading experience itself.
Another great episode! Though I can't approve of the unsanctioned Joyce slander in the beginning. One day Jimmy will become Joyce-pilled, it's just a matter of time.
I completely forget to add this but I think your idea of taking your content entirely live and then clipping it might actually be a great idea especially if it allows you talk more about things. John Campea, who does mostly film/tv content, does this. You could do a weekly live stream but it alternates: Chatting with Nutts one week and then alternate weeks are you going live to review what you read.
Re: hate reviews, I think one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to is Shrieking Shack, a re-read of Harry Potter by two "lapsed fans." The hosts were huge fans around 2000-2010, sort of fell by the wayside, and came back to them and they perfectly balance humor with some increasingly smart critique; because each episode is only 2 chapters of each book they're able to praise and tear apart and they never feel like they're FORCING themselves to be mad because they're able to be funny anyway. They're actually pretty positive on book 1 and 3, for instance. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for something that's not just a Hate Read to fill the day as they've done literally everything including the play and movies.
Steinbeck also wrote a King Arthur book if you want something closer to fantasy.
