The same price it costs for brokerage and authority is what you will be paying the carrier and broker if not more so it is always profitable to DIY if possible
Ok so I'm getting my own truck and authority so are you saying I should become a broker as well is it possible for one person to do all that or are you saying when you start growing the business and hiring employees to be the broker? Thanks
Henry Miller it's almost impossible bto broker and drive along with deal with the back office work of having your authority. So yes, once the business grows, hire staff. You can be the broker but have agents under you that do all of the leg work. This isn't an over night or one year goal. However, it is definitely the end game you know ? Start out with what you can handle and go from there. The more you cut out the middle man, the more money you make.
So I have a brokerage which I just started AND I am in the process of getting my own truck and actually leasing on to a o/o company such as greatwide or jones motor as the driver, dont I have to keep these 2 business separate as far as creating another LLC seperate from my brokerage for my truck? Mind you I haven't done any load moving with my brokerage and am thinking about putting it on hold actually for the time being, to focus more on what I know, which is driving. So can I use my LLC ein that my brokerage is under and also use my truck under that same LLC and ein or should I keep the 2 separate. If this makes sense, lol. I have a dot and mc number and authority for my brokerage, but I dont have anything but a truck on the other side no authority on that side, I'll be using whatever company I lease it on to dot/mc/authority/insurance for my truck.
Steven Wilson they are two separate entities. So they should have separate names. If you think of it in the long run if you ever decide to get a trucking authority, you would have to have two separate authorities for the trucking business and the brokerage. Also, when it comes to taxes and business expenses you want to keep record of the two separately. Use two different eins just to cover yourself. Both are your businesses. However, hypothetically, if the brokerage is making a profit, but your truck requires a lot of maintainence and is taking most of the profit, you don't want the money from the brokerage paying shop bills. If that makes sense. So basically, don't hinder both business by trying to keep the same name. Run them separately so one doesn't effect the other. Also, you may not have time to drive while also making 100 calls a day. Lease on new agents and have them work on commission. If they move something. They get paid. What shippers they bring in, are under your brokerage, you will build a book of business while driving. Congrats on that also'
@@keyalashay preciate it lady this the exact answer I was looking for. And yea that's exactly why I put it on hold because I cant drive and do 100+ calls aday right now. And to be honest the training I went through was horrible so I just opened the brokerage just to have it open right now but I'll try to do something with it later down the road but right now I'm going to keep focusing on what I know which is driving and trucking. But I will definitely separate the 2 entities, I appreciate that!
Good Insight... I'm currently in employee with that ex express in Indy but I'm looking to possibly one day be my own driver independent driver that is I will subscribe to your site. Thank you.
Can't speak for greatwide, but landstar has contract freight, (also brokered loads too, but those load normally get sent out the DAT load board unless the rate is really good). Plus fuel discounts cut yearly fuel cost by atleast 10 percent. When you pay 20,000 per year for insurance and rates fall through the floor, you'll wish you were pulling landstar loads. Imo
Randolph Privott they get a percentage of the discounted fuel rates as every company should. Every time you fuel, they get a cut. Landstar is known for double brokering but I'm sure they have some great agents to who actually go out and find their own freight. Having your authority paying for plates and insurance is affordable when you go directly to the shipper to negotiate your own rates that aren't cut which is the point of this video. No one wishes to pull landstars loads truly. And as I've stated in the video, the rate is still being cut by their brokerage and by their trucking authority before the owner operator gets it. Greatwide agents so get their own freight as well. Either way, they all operate the same
@@keyalashay I would need to see actual data. Right now it just sounds like fluff. I just got 4 drive tires that should have been 2400 four 1300. There's perks to dealing with the carrier. What's the insurance rates for your authority. What kinds of rates and loads are you getting from the shipper with just 1 truck. Last I checked shippers low ball carriers because the market is over saturated with trucks. Example: I get 65 percent plus 100 percent of fuel surcharge running hazmat from Laredo to Illinois. You get 100 percent of a 1 dollar per mile load from a over saturated market. Because you are a nobody with no capacity of your own doing what millions of more experienced people have already perfected. To procure shippers you will have to undercut other brokers, which will drive rates down even further than the non contract freight market has experienced for the past year. I'll subscribe and click the bell, maybe in your next video you'll cover how you are going to get these shippers to work with you over landstar without offering to move the freight for cheap. Is it better to have 65 percent of a 1000 or 100 percent of 500?
@@keyalashay I pray that you are successful. I am not saying these things to discourage but to sincerely ask that you share the numbers to show how this model is profitable when you are just starting out.
If you're just starting out, do what works for you! I said it's a good start! A lot of shippers like to deal with direct carriers and direct carriers are more likely to get a higher rate bevause they have the asset. They can garuantee to have a truck in the dock vs having to find a truck! Whether you have a one man operation or 100. The perks you get are because landstar as any other trucking company ustilizes residuals such as the tire discounts, the fuel discounts, factoring percentages. Those are more streams of income made off of the drivers. I'm not saying it's wrong but I'm speaking on the "perks" you're referring to. It's not just to benefit you as a driver but the overall company. It's not about you. The owner operators are the one getting the watered down rates . Have you ever negotiated and spoke directly to your shipper? Do you know what the starting rate for that load you dedicate your truck to? It's so much easier for a trucker with his own authority to get contracted freight through a shipper than it is for a broker with no assets. Carriers and brokers don't have to compete bevause they're in their own lane. If all the brokers decided to sell freight for $1 a mile then the carriers who have no clue how to find their own freight and depend on agents for the company they are leased on to will take the fall. The freight only looks saturated to you because you're seeing them second hand. Negotiatibg your own terms means you make your own numbers. No one depicts what you want to run a load for but you when you have the authority to do so.
"last you checked" but have you tried? Shippers aren't very hard to get, just tedious. And when you have the capacity, they will give you a chance but you have to have the proper documents to send to them in order to begin to negotiate with them. Landstar is safe which I understand but remember, you're never going to get all of what a load is worth and so far all you seem to care about is taking the pay cut for a couple of perks that is residual income to the multi million dollar company you work for.
Richard Fakhrai it depends on how much experience you have. I wouldn't recommend spending hundreds because majority of what you will learn will come from experience. However, if you're an o/o and operate under your own authority. You already have the tools. Your carrier packet and rate cons are gold when starting. ! Your rate cons have the shippers listed. you'll call them up, and send them your carrier packet. If you want the basics, try taking a udemy course that is on sale for $11. That's what I did.
Hey guys she knows what shes talking about I have my own truck and though i run through a company like i landstar i do real estate. The big thing with life is to make enough money to become self sufficient. If you all want all your money to come from trucking. I highly advise you listen to her
Neshaun Walker your truck has to be dot legal so it has to be ran under a trucking authority. Basically, you're asking if you can run it under a brokerage authority, you can't. Great question though 🤗
Nakeya Welch mind blowning 🤯 how would you give the loads that you can’t run to other carriers ? And if a shipper gives me tons of loads and I can only run one at a time because I’m a one man band would they be upset how does that work ?
If you have a contract with that shipper, yes they would be upset. If you have spot freight. Then no. The shipments you can't run, you'll put them on the loadboards so other carriers can bid on your freight and perhaps, transport it. But your brokerage will be responsible for that freight. You'll be the middle man and that's how you get paid
She is not telling you that you will have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on insurance to get your own authority and a lot of brokers will not load a new carrier
@@keyalashay wow good l am so happy happy friend thank you so your video message amazing so continues your videos i am watching your video God bless you friend
The best thing you can do when leased to a carrier, since you can't get a direct shipper working under someone else's authority, is to get in good and build a good relationship with a broker who has the lane and rate you want. I know it's not good right now. It's affecting the drivers who depend on the loadboards the most
robert j no you're inspiring.! 17 years is a third of my lifetime! That's amazing. However yes. You can make extra money with the brokerage by giving those loads to other carriers and keeping a commission for finder's fee and back-office fee 🤗
Landstar doesn’t work like this, I bet my insurance is half your cost, my fuel right now is 1.00 off pump price, what’s your discount. Who do you pay to take care of all your road tax stuff, who collects your money with no recourse, are your tires national account?that’s about a 30 % discount? There is a lot more to look at than you present, it’s a complicated business these days!
Leon S of course some people just want to drive and there is not a problem with that. But being a woman of child bearing age, driving isn't forever for me. So I like to consider the alternatives for my future you know ? 🙃 Thanks for commenting 😘
In another month or two me and my wife gonna start our on trucking authority. We wanna know how we get paid from the shipper and receiver fast and how do we keep loads coming. My wife gonna be the broker and im gonna be the driver.
Grant Pace Ohkay sounds great! Remember you'll need a broker authority and trucking authority to do both. However, when starting, just do trucking authority and get direct shippers with just the trucking authority. You can do that . As you grow, you can obtain the brokerage down the line once the shipments increase
I understand what you're talking about I'm currently working for one of your mega carrier's have been for a longgggg time. They are making over a Billion Dollars a Quarter with just over 8,000 drivers!!! Think about that for a second 8,000 trucks and 1 Billion Dollars in 3 months !!!!! So how much money are they taking off the top !!! They don't own a single truck or trailer and making a Billion Dollars in 3 months I can't stop saying that !!!!!!! I mean I couldn't tell you 10 other drivers names from the company that I'm leased on too, but they can pull us all together and make it work for. them . WHY CAN'T WE LEARN TO MAKE IT WORK FOR OURSELVES. Which is exactly what your talking about this is the information age Owner Operator should be able to do the same as these Mega Carriers and put together a company and make their own money.
Ty Bandy EXACTLY!! They realized so many drivers go and buy trucks and not authorities. So they figured if they supply the authority and the brokerage as a way to control the pool of drivers that only go and buy trucks! Exactly ty! Thanks for this comment 💜

Nakeya Welch yeah I actually started the process to get my own authority. Me and another one of my friends that drive are gonna do a venture together. I’ve been doing some research on brokering. That definitely seems like the way to go, less hands in the cookie jar..
Right. That's the best way to win is to eliminate as many people involved as possible! You guys will do great! It's so much to learn but so worth learning !
Michael Armstrong no that's where you're so wrong!! Shippers love direct carriers just as much as you love direct shippers. I run into them all the time. It doesn't matter how many trucks you have !

@@keyalashay Raynaud's Several guys who are leased onto Mercer and landstar report making really good money and liking what they do. They've got freedom for sure! I surely do not want to be a company driver for much longer and getting my own authority is not in the game plan right now. Having your own authority brings on a ton of responsibility along with high cost of insurance and constant paperwork, etc ! If you keep $20,000 in a maintenance account you should be able to do just fine. l know a guy that started out with no maintenance account and made it. He took 50% of every paycheck and put it in his maintenance account as he went along.
Yes they have freedom but the point is, buying a truck is one thing, but finding the freight is another. If you want to go buy a truck and lease it on, the money is going to pass through so many hands before it reaches yours. Everyone has their own idea of what "good money" is. All I'm saying is, buying a truck is just a really small piece of the puzzle. It's more money than a company driver and more freedom but that's about it.
And running strictly off of the loadboard just isn't going to cut it. You can't get any contracts (by being leased on) so you have to depend on brokers and the load board to make it. It's not much freedom as you think.
Thanks for the breakdown. But not many of us can go from company driver straight to having your own authority and brokerage. You need a lot of money saved and good credit. That's why some of us go the lease route.
Bishop it takes time which is why I said it's a start. However it's not where you finish. Oohhh trust me I know it takes money. I'm just saying it's something to think about ! That's all

Thanks for the advice I am all about cutting out the middle man and getting out from under big companies!!
Best thing is to get you own authority and accounts directly with the shipper 😁
Easier said than done!
Definitely not the best thing you can do.
Shipper direct is great... but they want you to have a lot more than just 1 truck and 1 trailer..
Steven Wilson you're very welcome ! Good luck ! You got this !
Good Insight... I'm currently in employee with that ex express in Indy but I'm looking to possibly one day be my own driver independent driver that is I will subscribe to your site. Thank you.
This video is Gold 💯
Thank u Queen 👸🏾 🙏🏾
Go ahead sister im so proud right now!!
Do you recommend taking a freight broker class or is it better to self educate?
Richard Fakhrai it depends on how much experience you have. I wouldn't recommend spending hundreds because majority of what you will learn will come from experience. However, if you're an o/o and operate under your own authority. You already have the tools. Your carrier packet and rate cons are gold when starting. ! Your rate cons have the shippers listed. you'll call them up, and send them your carrier packet. If you want the basics, try taking a udemy course that is on sale for $11. That's what I did.
Question, I have my own truck, and would like a contract with a shipper. Can you help me establish this?
Norman Walters next video❤️ I just made one about this a few days ago

Great video and thanks for info
Can you own a brokage and book loads for your personal truck without having a authority or being leased on to a company ?
Neshaun Walker your truck has to be dot legal so it has to be ran under a trucking authority. Basically, you're asking if you can run it under a brokerage authority, you can't. Great question though 🤗
Nakeya Welch so by having my own brokage and having my own authority I can essentially cut the middle man 👨 out and receive all the funds for a load ?
Yes and you would be able to give the loads that come through your brokerage to other carriers for more profit
Right. What I didn't say is it's not going to be easy.
Great content, are you still in trucking? You would make a great Mentor.. I’m in the middle I guess, New O/O.. ??

How much is it to get your brokerage license
Success orr It varies. From authority, insurance and Surety bond. Your surety bond will be the determining factor since it's based on credit
Do u book power only loads for o/o?
Damn he is a blessed man.
Do u book power only loads for o/o!
Dtownbound 1 only load outs right now. If you run those I can give you that info
Great vid.
Very true,
Thanks I’m leased to Mercer. Last year was good..this year not!! rates bad how do we contact someone to help?
The best thing you can do when leased to a carrier, since you can't get a direct shipper working under someone else's authority, is to get in good and build a good relationship with a broker who has the lane and rate you want. I know it's not good right now. It's affecting the drivers who depend on the loadboards the most
Speaking of that, I have some lumber loads. What areas are you running ?
Nakeya Welch I pull a van.
Randy cotterman where do you run Currently? All 48 or southeast?
I have van loads to. Currently just vented van load. Seasonal getting ready for halloween 🙃🙃
We left landstar 5 months ago
Your inspiring. 17 years independent, 1 truck. Should add broker authority to my MC and partner with someone like you to run it (4:57).
robert j no you're inspiring.! 17 years is a third of my lifetime! That's amazing. However yes. You can make extra money with the brokerage by giving those loads to other carriers and keeping a commission for finder's fee and back-office fee 🤗

Can I ask u a ? If u don’t mind.... does your truck payment if u have one and insurance payment make like through the roof
No my truck payment is 995. I went to lone mountain
Excellent video
Landstar doesn’t work like this, I bet my insurance is half your cost, my fuel right now is 1.00 off pump price, what’s your discount. Who do you pay to take care of all your road tax stuff, who collects your money with no recourse, are your tires national account?that’s about a 30 % discount? There is a lot more to look at than you present, it’s a complicated business these days!

Grant Pace so what are you needed info on?

Very interesting info. I work for Mercer
Stay tuned for next week's vid. I was at greatwide but the plan is to become greatwide! Mercer, such as Greatwide, is a start! Glad you've made it thus far! So hang in there 🙃
Nakeya Welch yeah I actually started the process to get my own authority.
Nakeya Welch yeah my only regret is waiting 5yrs to step out there.
5 years is better than never ! And there is no telling what could have happened if you would have stepped out five years or even three years ago! 🙃
Great video but Landstar bco rates are much higher then they give to outside contractors
Mr Christopher Henry
And yet Landstar has 6000 owner ops each telling you they make more than if they were an independent owner operator... lol
Aahh yes! Never fails !
Because that's what Landstar tells THEM.
So we're gonna ignore the fact that 90% of the most desirable, high paying freight will never go to a 1,2,10 truck company?
Michael Armstrong no that's where you're so wrong!! Shippers love direct carriers just as much as you love direct shippers. I run into them all the time. It doesn't matter how many trucks you have !
Have you even tried?
I even gave you a pumpkin shipper that is eager to sign on Carriers. I helped a one truck carrier sign on to them two weeks ago. You really don't need to think that. Your statement is absolutely Wrong
How long will those pumpkin loads last? And, how heavy? Very heavy!
L. A. Draper right now they're scheduled up until mid October

What if you don't care to have your own authority? I want to lease on to a company and I've considered Landstar or Mercer.
I tried getting a hold of Shaggy and never returned my message.
Trucker Ron shaggy is super busy. What if your one truck breaks down and you're out of business. Back to a company driver.? When you lease on, your money goes through sooo many hands that it's kinda not worth it but you can do what ever makes you happy. I'm not here to stop you, I'm just sharing this video to inform you so the decision is still yours. If you're ohkay with it, by all means, go ahead.
@J Bar And Now what are you doing?
Thank you so much! I was going to jump off the roof and go to landstar!.....after this video....hell no!
Lol good luck on what you decide🤗🤗
Thanks for the breakdown. But not many of us can go from company driver straight to having your own authority and brokerage. You need a lot of money saved and good credit. That's why some of us go the lease route.
Bishop it takes time which is why I said it's a start. However it's not where you finish. Oohhh trust me I know it takes money. I'm just saying it's something to think about ! That's all
You go head with your head fine self 😍😍😍
If you see that double broker loads or find out stay away you are fucked in this game.
