  • Seems like there's a number of things wrong with this Marantz 4230 so I'm hesitant to try and fix it. Never-the-less, I take a shot at it. Glad I did.
Note: I've sped up sections of this video.

Jim. I had a Marantz 4400. Bought new in 1977 it was almost $1100. It developed the same problem with one of the push buttons. Oddly enough, it was a button that was hardly ever used. The 4400 was 150w x 2 and 50w x 4. Hooked up to a pair of Klipsh Heresy and a pair of Jennings Research speakers, it rattled windows four houses away. I seem to remember that Superscope had bought out Marantz around that time. The receiver was a real mixed bag, but even as one by one the lights burned out and even after a Coke was spilled into it, The darn thing kept right on going. The only ill effects from the Coke was it blew the fuse for the oscilloscope. Easy fix. Thanks for the blast into the past Jim. You can't go wrong if you buy it.

I have this exact model receiver sitting on the shelf in the garage. Bought it new in 1974 while in the Navy. Best sounding system I've ever owned. Quad was a thing back in the early 70s that never really caught on. Even the sales person tried to talk me into buying a 2-channel system that had twice the power for the same cost. Don't think I'll ever be able to sell it. Over the years I had to do some maintenance on mine too. If you search the internet you may find an old magazine ad showing a Marantz turned on after surviving a house fire. It was a beast during it's time.

I remember as a teen in the 70’s going in the stereo store where they had closed glass rooms with my friend and cranking those up!

That is just amazing. Not sure if I would have taken the front panel off myself when troubleshooting but it certainly paid off. You never know what you are going to run into. Definitely something to keep in mind. I sometimes get so focused on what I think is wrong that it takes longer to find the real problem. Congrats Jim.

Those, if working,,, go for between 400 to 600 dollars US. Just the parts units go for $125 and up. That is a valuable stereo. If you can get it from those people cheap,,, I'd grab it Jim.

I can't watch this one, the thought of WD40 going in a Marantz, is just to much for me

Two more things. The schematic looked like a New York City street map, including the suburbs. And the panel on the bottom was for a demodulator for a quad enabled turntable. Oh, and bonus thing. The panel lights are these weird looking things that look like fuses. Even when my 4400 was relatively new, they were practically unobtanium.

I just got one of these free
    No power at all
Fuse looks brand new. No signs of blow up parts inside. Have not tested the power switch yet. In your experience with this unit. Chances are good my power switch needs a dexoit?

There is one Service engineer I used to watch until her friend did something I didn't agree with so I unsubscribed from her but she did actually service HI-FI equipment besides other things, but her living room was coming down with units like the unit you have there I think she lives in Santa Rosa near to or in Nevada

It is filed inside the contacts you need to take the switch apart more than likely it's repairable? And that's why you're having the problem with the speaker output.
The contact has jammed itself inside the switch? You could try flicking the switch might release it
Why does it need to disconnect the speakers? Prevent crackling on your speakers when the capacitors discharge.
Easy repair old glue is failing why they need those rubber rings anyway I don't know
