Thailand Golden Triangle Motorbike Tour - Episode 4 - Karen Long Neck Tribe

  • On day four of my Golden Triangle Motorbike Tour, I visited the Karen Long Neck Tribe in Chaing Rai Thailand. Part of the Karen Tribe immigrated from Myanmar after political unrest and are given housing and education for their children. As of late, the Village has had some criticism being called a "human zoo". So I visited, learned about the situation, the people and am reporting my thoughts and opinions.

There's no shame in providing. I hate my job here in the USA but I do it because I provide. I feed and house my family. Thanks God, I'll retire next year. Sometimes i also feel like a monkey in a zoo.

I agree with you, people being judgmental about the village without seeing it from multiple angles.
As you say, being a “red light” lady is one of the oldest forms of earning a coin in the world, maybe these so called experts should think from the villagers point of view!!
Does Clint Eastwood not seem himself as an actor to an audience?? So why can’t the Long Neck villagers sell themselves to an audience?
    Great work Mr CB👍👍👍

Nice perspective on the Karen tribe.
I know the area (S.E.Asia) well I've been living in it since 1989.
I like your take on Backpackers, we have all been there done that in our 20's good thing we grow out of it and become Travellers or tourist interested in the people and land we travel to.
I just hope your videos don't bring more of the type of people that go to Pattaya.
I'll keep the places I know a secret.

I went to this village about 3 weeks before you posted this video. It's so crazy seeing all the same people I met on my trip, in your video. I didn't get the human zoo vibe either when I was there. I bought a bunch of their stuff for my friends back home. I will say, if anything they are being a little bit used by the Thai's that charge us to go in. They sell a lot of stuff that's obviously not hand made by them, and probably came from Indonesia for a quarter the price.

I applaud your comments at the end of this video. Most westerns look down at people that aren't blessed to be born in a western country. As you said these people are doing what they need to do to survive . People in the west have become too comfortable and don't realize how hard it is for the majority of the world just to live day to day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with this video. It makes one uncomfortable knowing that we have it so easy and others have to live like this to survive.

You ask people to think things trhough logically ? You are one optimist ! I do agree completely with you though. People always get offended but forget how 'good' we have it here in 'the west' If you look at it from the perspective of the people living in these villages and the options they have, you quickly realise this isn't the worse situation possible, far from it even.

What most people don't realize is that the Karen village is a forced settlement. The Karen, like the Hmong and the Shawn hill tribes are traditionally migrant people. In Thailand as in Laos and Vietnam the are considered stateless. You touched upon the fact that few in the village speak Thai. This is because outside of their village that are considered illegal immigrants.

Gotta agree. Nice content. Its always difficult to know what's right in such types of situations. Those people are refugees but don't get refugee status so are limited without proper papers. Even when they are born in Thailand they don't have proper papers. Its good that you thought it out and interacted with them. Are they free to move about outside of the village? Where were the men? Who did you pay the entrance fee to? Thanks for the cool video. You drive faster than me over here hehe.

I'm with you on your view of the Karen Long Neck Tribe. If you go there as some gawker just to stare and take pics, you have made it a zoo. If someone does not see them as people and treat them accordingly, then that person is a dick anyway. But I would totally go and visit with them. We are so spoiled in this country. Many people here cannot see beyond the circumstances that we are born into to even consider and understand the conditions that other people have to endure. I believe it is possible to observe and help people in need without reducing them to the equivalent of a freak show. I appreciate your perspective. Rock on Chad!

The phrase, wind your neck in Karen, takes on new meaning.
Some are unable to see past their own bias and view of white oppression over others, they have to complain as it makes them feel validated and virtuous, it is, in fact, short-sighted and tedious.
