the main target where the tunnels and underground bunkers. before there was 3-4 houses that is buried to the ground. and the hills that had sniper and RPG Bunkers and tunnels. every single one of them terrorist was buried and burned alive.
When I was in Vietnam, the USAF used a similar bomb to make an instant landing zone for helicopters. I think they were 10,000 lb bombs. You don't want to be anywhere close to it when they drop.
Project Commando Vault developed the BLU-82, nicknamed Daisy Cutter. It was a 15,000 lb bomb that dropped out the ass of a C-130, but was also deployed by the Sky Crane. The last combat use of the Daisy Cutter was during the Battle of Tora Bora in Afghanistan, 2001. The last Daisy Cutter was dropped at Utah Test and Training Range in 2008.
It's about a 25,000 lb penetrator, with 5,000 lbs of explosives. Its not really a huge blast, and it's not designed for a huge blast. It's designedbd penetrate like 50 feet in to solid rock, then explode to collapse a whole cave system. The MOAB is the big explosion one.
Yes and no. originally these types of weapons were used to clear landing sites for helicopters (BLU-82) and the primary target is still soft to medium targets on surface. BUT....... if that shock wave hits a cave complex it will pretty much take out anything in the area. Penetrators or bunker busters are made to go into the earth and explode wrecking whatever is there, the MOAB is an air burst though and lets the shockwave crush you (so to speak).
I'd be curious to know what the kill radius is on that explosion. Like how far away from the center of the blast does that shockwave still kill you? How well does the lethality of the blast follow terrain?
You could easily notice the ground from hundred meters away were shaken down or have collapsed. That is one terrifying scene from the enemy's (ISIS) point of view.
@@asifali653 No point fighting for people who wont fight for themselves. So much more suffering coming for the people there once our forces are gone. It's a crying shame for all parties.
The original bomb that gave rise to the US’s and Russia’s bombs, was the Grand Slam, which GB made in WWII. And this was known as the first Earthquake bomb. It was 22,000lbs, and was very successfully used a number of times. Including sinking the Tirpitz and taking out U-Boat pens, Etc...
Grand Slam was a penetrator bomb, it buried itself underground and detonated creating massive earth tremors and hollowing out the ground beneath structures causing them to collapse (it's called a camouflet). The same effects were created in water hence the use of Grand Slam against Tirpitz. MOAB is a totally different weapon using a totally different method of destruction delivery. It's an air blast weapon designed to kill everything above ground with massive overpressure; no crater, no earth tremors just pure blast pressure in the air. The USAF uses massive penetrators today against deep bunkers and tunnels, they're just not MOABs which owe their design more to nukes.
There's a tunnel complex under the former buildings there. I'd like to see what that looks like now. We should have struck the openings with high penetration munitions after the MOAB strike. Could be weapons caches there.
By watching the camera and what its operator is filming we can say that there use to be a number of buildings there. One gun found and no body to go with it. Must have been one blast that was felt around the camp fires.
So they just dropped it on some random mountain? Or was it some sort of underground facility there?(If so, why not use the bunker-buster bomb instead?)

Exactly. Most of the damage is underground. Anyone in that cave system was either vaporized or buried alive. I like to lean toward the latter, thinking they died terrified while screaming for their lives. Just my Opinion.😁
I mean damn, after watching that it can't help but make you think about how we believe IEDs being placed in a fight by people who don't even have body armor is cowardly and cheating.
For they guys out of reach of the blast zone, yes thermoberic effects burned up the air in the tunnels. But certainly, some fellas were definitely eliminated, vaporized by the direct blast . See the AK-47 that was disintegrated by the blast partially vaporized essentially. A stain is all that's left of the guy that must've been holding it . The moab turned the mountain side inside out .
Not nearly as big as you might think... A 2,000lb JDAM holds about 1,000 pounds of explosives and has a claimed blast radius of something like 27 feet, so about 50 feet across. Due to something called inverse square law you need a bomb 4 times larger to double the actual blast radius, so despite the MOAB being about 20 times bigger the blast wouldn't be anywhere near 20 times wider.
