    It has been a long time coming to make tactical guides. I am planning some collaborations between myself and people who have been making these sorts of FM tactic videos for years, so that is something to look forward to, but for now I was determined to find Pep’s exact tactic in Football Manager 2022. I played matches over and over and over trying to get those Man City boys playing the right way and I think we finally got it for FM22.
    The trick is slowing down too much can be a problem and creating the right kind of fluidity on FM tactics that Pep Guardiola is able to bring to his teams. This is not a tactic that would work with every team, you need intelligent, technical players to execute the fluidity to your advantage and not to the other team’s. There’s nothing more appealing in Football Manager than a team that is moving out of your way and inviting your attack in. So, make sure you’re not that team, but if you think you have the guys for it, go dominate FM with this tactic.
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

    Interesting vid, if I had one criticism it would be that Kyle Walker doesn't overlap or get down the wing really that often. He plays inverted and tucks in basically to the right of Rodri. He'd be IWB-De I reckon.
    His job is to recycle possession and stops counters.
    Cancelo is the full back with lots of freedom.

  • @tajj7
    @tajj7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

    I think that is more older school Pep so probably more what he did initially with City and for a long term with Barcelona. Currently City (and most of last season) are playing with actual Wingers IMO, with a double no.8 pivot that tries to get into the box, with basically a false 9, so that is why you have the likes of Silva and last year Gundogan scoring lots of goals. So you play wide with attacking wingers (who also will still get into the box, and obviously IRL Mahrez when he plays there still comes inside a lot, but he starts very wide) and then have runners from deep in midfield, with a midfielder holding (so could be DLP or Half back, one of the 'hold position' DMs), and then two inverted wing-backs. So what you get then is in possession the wingers very wide, two no.8s bursting into the box past the 'false 9' (could use CF on support, DLP, false 9, treq etc. depending on your striker) and then essentially in possession a 3 in the middle holding things, with the two inverted wingbacks who basically go sit next to the DLP. In this years FM inverted wingbacks seem to basically sit more in midfield like proper midfielders. I also have one of the inverted wingbacks on attack, to try to create the 'Cancelo' of real life City, so you can actually end up with a 3rd deep runner midfielder who breaks the lines, which then leaves a 'box' of the DLP, the other inverted wingbacks and the two centre-backs. That box should protect you from counter-attacks and help you recycle the ball keeping possession, with obviously the forward line all working hard to counter press as well.

      I agree that their wide players are wingers. He said they've been playing a 442 recently which is slightly wrong. They defend in a 442 but when they attack it's more like a 235 with the 2 central defenders, 2 inverted fullbacks and the holding midfielder and the 5 is made up of the f9, 2 wingers and midfielders surging forward

    • @tajj7
      @tajj7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jur1_00 Yeh especially with Cancelo, who is very aggressive in his inverted role often breaking forward to get shots in from the edge of the box and running past the midfielders. Walker tends to sit more conservatively near Rodri so like I said you have that defensive box in the middle of the CBs, DM and right IWB, which protects them on the counter.

    • @messigoh6061

      Not exactly traditional wingers. The wingers usually hug the touchline but when they get on the ball the cut inside and run at the defense they dont try to take it to the byline like traditional wingers. Great examples would be grealish or mahrez

      I completely agree. Whenever I use "distribute quickly", my goalie just kicks it all the way to the opponent's half 8 times out of 10. "Distribute slowly" allows the team to settle down and correct their shape which in turns helps the goalie to play the instructed pass.

    Zealand, City's wingers play really high and wide and the full backs stay inside and don't overlap at all. The Full-backs should be IWB's, the wingers should have instructions to stay wide. Rodri being a Halfback is spot-on though

    • @Jack-kz1qi
      @Jack-kz1qi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think Zealand was trying to replicate the philosophy more so than the exact execution. I do agree though, perhaps walker as a FB or even WCB to recreate that 3 back feel with cancelo as an IWB so he supports rodri in that DM role while KDB and silva join the attack.

      In the tactical breakdown videos I watched they would do this sometimes, kind of alternating (the fullbacks I mean) that’s why I tested it out but found for a basic formula having them set the width that pep loves to switch too was better for FM

    • @MrGBags66
      @MrGBags66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've watched a few Pep recreations or tactical analysis and they have said that last season Pep deployed IWB, but not this season. I think the reason why Pep is so good is because he can quickly find a system that is highly successful and then adapt it later to counter managers getting a bead on him and be able to beat the team.

    • @Archie-th7qh
      @Archie-th7qh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cancelo doesn't do that though, he's usually the wide player on the left with Bernardo Silva dropping into the double pivot. This is new for this season.

    • @shawngillogly6873
      @shawngillogly6873 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something Pep has done in different ways based on who he has. I would personally have this done asymmetrically, with an IWB on one side with a winger in front, and the attacking CM play on the same side so the IWB has space to move into. And then a traditional wingback with the supporting CM and the playmaking/scoring inside forward (choose your preferred flavor) on this side.
      That would replicate his Bayern and Barca versions. And the patterns he has when injuries aren't limiting choices, imho.

    Love this style of video! For a 442, i'd almost be tempted to go strikerless 442 for what Pep has been playing this season. I'd have the wide mids stay wide and have inverted fullbacks though. I think with this, you'd be more able to keep the balance and have that front 4 pressing you wanted

    to get more out of high pressing, dont use prevent short GK kicks.
    when pressing high you want the opposition to play out of defence and in my experience it works better when you lower the line of engagement to high and use very high backline to keep the team compact, and of course the highest setting on press.

    Excellent video Zealand. I have watched a number of tactic recreations from other contributors and yours has the added bonus of explaining how the various roles work and why you chose them. I have found though that replaying matches the results are rarely the same if you don't change the tactic. For example, I won a difficult match and the computer crashed before I could save my progress. When I played the match again, I didn't do so well. As I was rather irritated that I was robbed of a good victory, I replayed the match until I got the result I wanted. It took about 4 replays to win. So, you may have found that if you had left your tactic and roles as they were, you may have had different results anyway. So, if you lost against Brentford in your first play through, you may have beaten them 5 times if you replayed it unchanged. I hope you are encouraged to do more of these types of videos.

    You can also somewhat overcome roles with PPMs, so for example the half back, you want him to like you say drop in between the centre-backs, which is the only role that does it, BUT you also want someone who is progressive with their passes so will take a few more risks at times, dictate the tempo, switch play etc. a bit like a playmaker, so you can achieve those by making sure the person has those sort of PPMS to do the other stuff you want them to do with the ball, with the 'role' more dictating their positional play. Like really in an aggressive pressing/passing tactic a regista or DLP support works really well IMO how you want them to be on the ball, and threading those passes through to the deep runners or the wingers in the channel, but that role tends to have them push too far forward or get out of position. Shame we don't get carte blanche to edit roles completely.

      I adjust passing tempo and risk to game state. I'll move the ball quicker early to try to get the 1st goal and unsettle the opposition. Once we have a lead, or if we're not keeping the ball well, I'll drop tempo. If we're losing, I'll increase risk via mentality.

    Toughest thing to recreate in a Pep tactic in FM is the pressing and your attacking wingers staying wide. The match engine just doesn't allow players to stay out wide and only way to have width higher up the pitch is with your fb's, but this then makes you fragile. Best way I've managed to recreate a Pep 'style tactic is using IWB's with the left on support as Cancelo role and the right on defend in the Walker role. With fb's too high you're far too fragile. I just try look to overload early and win the 2nd ball. Have the left CM pushed up as a SS on roam and wide, marking the CM on his side, other CM on support with get forward and get in channels and DM on anchorman. As you say, so difficult to replicate Pep in the ME but that's how I recreate it.

    would love to see your take at tuchels tactics! i find them really interesting, but at the moment the midfield feels kind of broken on FM22 when i try to replicate. All tactics are learnt "fluid" but CMs are always awkward in terms of positioning and duty. And this is after 3 seasons of training it

    About your problem with the keeper distributing the ball anywhere and taking to many long kicks.
    The distribution type says who the keeper is allowed to distribute the ball to while "distribute to position" tells the keeper which players he should prefer from all the options he is allowed to play the ball to. So telling the keeper to distribute the ball to the centerbacks marks them as his first option but with "take short kicks" he is still allowed to distribute the ball anywhere except for to the Target Man and playing long balls over the opposing defense line.
    So you should always chose "roll it out" if you want your keeper to distribute the ball short because with that option the only players he is allowed to play the ball to are the centerbacks, the wingbacks and the defensive/zentral midfielders.
    Im playing a Sweeper Keeper on defend with the PI less risky passes plus the TI to roll the ball out and its working great.

    In my career, I put my GK to roll it out so we play from the centre backs or full backs, but sometimes when he doesn't have another option he just kicks it

    I hope they’ll be able to bring in a much more advanced pressing system at some point in the future - it’s too basic as it is at the moment, particularly relative to how advanced the rest of the game is getting. At least be able to set up proper pressing chains and determine whether particular players are pressing the ball or pressing the passing lanes. It’s such an important part of football now that I think we need more flexibility than what is basically how fast they do something resembling pressing as it is now.

    I really hope this becomes a series, Z. I know you've been unsure about it, but the way you describe your thought processes AND how that translates to the roles you've used is a tactical class all on its own. So even you _don't_ fully represent tactics in FM, you're teaching us all how to think our way through creating the tactics we want.

    Oh god this is working wonders for my Barça team. I got Messi back for free in my save. My midfield is Bellingham on the left cm (support), Messi cm (attack) and Nico/De Jong behind them as a a Regista. Messi is so good as a CM it’s ridiculous.

    The keeper is ‘sending it’ is because you probably have distribute quickly on, take it off and he’ll take his time, not sure if any one has said this yet but there you go.

    Idk why iwb and mez was a problem, maybe because in tests you used Mez on s. I tried to tweak the Pep tactic from one if the best SI forums article ive seen that tried to emulate Pep in 21 and it had iwbs and double mez at and it still works in 22 for me. Interestignly Poacher works insanely well with those tactics with strikers that are fast and like to break a line for example Victor Osmihen, Ben Sesko.
    This year though my goal will be trying my damnest to try and emulate the Pep 442 that looks like one of hardest tasks because that front 6 rotates everywhere 😭😭😭

    • @JackoVX
      @JackoVX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZealandonYT thats fair. Its prob due to my wingers being quite different to yours. I ran double IWs on stay wider and because i run double look for underlap they behave more like classic wingers and also drop quite deep to give space to mezzalas runs. With my Napoli and later Rennes save guys like Eljif Elmas, Piotr Zielinski, Lovro Majer and tailored to that role Pedro Goncalves performed good to Serie A POTY level (for Pote) often abusing rcm run forward due to opening created by the left side overload.

    I enjoy trying to make lower ability and lower level teams play possession and attacking based play as it is satisfying to see it at the smaller clubs but at some point I expect I’ll try to play less that way at a club someday. So in short Zealand, I will play this at a low level team in spite of what you say lol
