    Lesson: • Irish Fiddle Lesson - ...
Tam Lin Jig, a slightly easier version to play: • Tam Lin Jig - Celtic F...
Tam LIn of Carterhaugh melodic slower version: • Tam Lin of Carterhaugh...
    Notation:yt3.ggpht.com/...
Tam-Lin Reel/Glasgow Reel is associated with Davey Arthur who used to play with the Fureys. It is probably based around a traditional melody as the style of flipping between strings is reminiscent of many fiddle tunes.
Having said that, it is a great tune by any standard and so much fun to play.
It gets played a lot in the sessions and sounds great when loads of instruments join in.

    Hey, PeakFiddler!
    Im an African-American male.
Im 66 years old, and I've just now taken up learning how to fiddle!
Your "Cooley's Reel" video ( and your 2 instructional videos on how to play C. R.) has inspired me to learn how to fiddle!
I know its gonna take me awhile to master C.R.
I've already memorized and can play the first line of C.R., but my timing is waaaaay off, and needs serious practice🤣.
Once I've learned "Cooley's Reel", "Tam Lin" is next.
    Stay tuned!!
    ~Ken B.

    • @amberhawke
      @amberhawke 3 ปีที่แล้ว

First time I heard this tune was at the Michigan Renaissance Festival, played by a duo called Brollywacker, the main melody was played on a hammered dulcimer and their version started off quite relaxed, but with each repeat picked up the pace and it ended up quite the scorcher! This tune has been a favorite of mine now for over 30 years. I think this is the first time I've heard the tune expertly played on a fiddle.

I don't know how to put this, but this is probably my preferred reel and I have to say that your interpretation is by far the one that moved me the most, despite the fact I've been spending far too much time listening to it, interpreted by various musicians. I discovered your channel a few days ago and I'm still amazed by your work. I've been raised in a family where Irish folk songs accompanied our growth, and what I'm hearing right now sounds to me like the soul of Ireland asking me to pick my fiddle and start playing, though I'm not Irish at all. I started learning violin with classical music and almost gave up. That's when I started fiddling and few are the things able to put a smile on my face like struggling while learning a reel, or playing in a pub during a session can. Your videos just remind me of theses times and what I missed while not playing for years, and I finally started playing again. Thank you and keep the hard work, through your tutorials and interpretations you really are giving people both motivation and joy

Gorgeously played. Full of musical tension, rhythmic anticipation and swing. Nice tempo, allowing (were it session play) other players to assimilate the tune. Guitar nicely in the offbeat, matching Irish dancer's downweighting.

One of the best versions of this great tune I've come across - I always return to it from time to time. Other versions might be more 'polished', but this one simply has an excitement, drive and 'feel' (from great authentically 'folk' ornamentation, slides, bowing and everything else) that are perfect. Great backing too.

Only started playing fiddle going on 6 years ago (at age 68) with some missed lessons and practice because of illness. Love your videos and such a variety of tunes. • @peakfiddler

Yes, there is no doubt that playing the fiddle/violin is certainly a lot more strenuous than many instruments. Particularly, if you stand up to play. However, the plus side is the fact that it is also very good exercise and helpful as one grows older.
Don't forget, that you can always slow down the videos using that little wheel symbol underneath the video window and there is nothing wrong with playing at a more sedate pace, I know I do it most of the time, well that's my excuse anyway, haha

1:49 EPIC key change (A to E) really shows off the high range of the fiddle

It's actually from D minor to A minor. You just play a string up. Cool little fiddle "trick" one can do.

actually better to think modal rather than key - D Dorian to A Dorian

Its also cool to sit back and say wow! this cat has skills. the way he draws that note at the top of the A part. And, feel that right before the key change? when he settled into the tune He was vibrating at just the right frequency. he has other moments where the feel is so real, but one stands out to me as the moment of the song . right about 1:25 through the whole turnaround and pegs a beautiful note at 1:35. I don't know the tech terms for his movements but, I love that shit man!

Thank you so much for this beautiful tune. It's been in my short list of looped songs that I am learning for the flute and concertina. It is so fast and so perfectly satisfying - until I start trying to play along. Just based on the numbers, at first, by chance I hit about every 10th note. I decided to not take the easy way out and just gently drone a single low 'D' for the entire tune. I am slowly getting it. Very slowly. Today I discovered the Tam LIn of Carterhaugh melodic slower version which is also beautiful. More my speed, then I listened to the Jig version. Like that too! So my short list includes all three tunes. I'm also learning the violin but I'm not even ready to try the melodic version on that instrument. By the way... once you listen to Tam Lin; it's almost impossible for me to stop trying to silently sing it in my head. It's not even individual notes after a while, just one unbroken note sliding all over the place. How does he do that ?

This is amazing! I dance and play, and this is true artistry on both fronts. Thank you for sharing! You've brought such a smile to my face and cheer to my heart, I'll probably be replaying this for the rest of the evening.

Interesting modulation to the A-minor. Lightens the dark a bit. Fantastic!
