Don't use any oil paint on an unprepared canvas. You get absorption issues (as seen above) and the canvas will literally rot. You can use water mixable on regular acrylic gesso with no problem. Been doing it for years. I often use WM oil paints over acrylic underpaintings as well. Golden has done a bunch of research into the subject. You don't need an oil based primer, although it is technically the best way to prep a canvas for oil painting.

Thanks for that info, I've just got these wm oils and was hoping I can use over my acrylics and not have to buy a crate load of other materials 😊

What about over an acrylic base gesso?

So, I went and bought this oil primer (2 liters for big canvases) -- but I have questions that this video does not answer.... like how to apply this oil primer... there are several videos out there... some say you need to "size" it which entails coating it with some horrifying base called rabbit skin something... or apparently you can apply some sort of acrylic mixture as a base... and then apply the oil pimer, which apparently takes at least 2 weeks to dry for one coat and a month for 2 coats... this video is completely inadequate and needs to provide all the facts and how to actually DO this oil priming... the pros and cons and other options... I feel I have wasted my money and will probably try to return the oil primer ... or simply use regular oils on a gesso primed canvas

Not sure if it’s too late but you can apply oil primer over an acrylic primer, so if you’re using store bought canvas or canvas panels that are already acrylic primed you can simply brush on one or two thing coats of oil primer and when it’s been dry for a week you can paint on it. Hope this helps.

Is this just normal primer or some special solvent- free one?

I THINK U NEED A PRIMER (GESSO) WITH OIL IN IT INSTEAD OF ACRYLIC....I PERSONALLY WOULD TRY PAINTING A THIN LAYER OF OIL PAINT OVER MY ACRYLIC GESSO ....AS ITS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND OIL GESSO THSES DAYS
