The Top Gear sound recordists were my first mixing heroes. I've only ever managed to read a couple brief articles/interviews with Russ Edwards and a couple others. Thank you so much for putting this out, this is invaluable and unbelievably cool.
Hey Line Level Media - Thank you! Yes the team behind Top Gear & The Grand Tour have been remarkable dark horses about their work. Rarely giving interviews that go into the deep technical underbelly of the work & planning involved. We were really lucky to have been able to speak with Kiff about this & also his work on 'Boiling Point' in our previous video, it really was a privilege.
Kiff, thanks so much for generously sharing your experiences and Simon, thanks for putting this together! And I had to LOL at "...its not that I don't trust them...I just don't trust them."
URSA, please keep putting out content like this. It's great to hear from people who actually work in the industry (Simon Hayes etc) invaluable knowledge and experience to those starting out. Thanks.
Hey hey! I was just rewatching Top Gear last night and thinking about how it consistently sounds so good in all those crazy environments… Super enlightening!
Wow, this was a great watch! Very informative and entertaining. Looking forward to watching your other video with Kiff (Boiling Point). Thank you URSA Straps.
This is such a great video! Every time I watch Top Gear I wonder how are they able to get the sound in the middle of that craziness!! Thanks URSA Straps and Kiff McManus 🤗🤗
Thank you , I think this translates to "This is so blatantly nerdy, I love it. I'm not a sound professional, but I'm thrilled" !! haha! great. Unapologetically nerdy.
That was one wet episode I always wondered how they did that but in a way without realizing it because the audio was always so good I never thought about it too much. I love hearing the war stories through time how it was done and how it has changed.
Thanks imark! To be honest its still a mystery how they consistently manage to get such great audio. There is a dark art. Radio mics are not easy. There is so much nuance behind each rig that you cannot really just give the details and be able to re-create it. Takes so much time & experience so do this well
I absolutely love this ❤ great learning experience 👍. Just one thing though I found your second camera placement very irritating, please correct for the camera placement for interviews next time. Thanks 🙏
What about adding small inflators around the bag in a way that make it balanced and floating above water , pump it up with air before shooting and thats it ,Thanks for sharing , please keep that show going on ..
Love this channel! Dumb question: I film quite a few 1-2 person interviews. I use two wireless lavs and a boom. I want to blend the lavs with the boom to get the best of both worlds. However, they are always out of time with each other. I use a zoom F8n which has independent input delays but no matter how accurately I measure distances from source to mic I cannot sync the mics. I cannot imagine trying to sync plant mics with lavs for dailies. What am I missing?
fascinating. Thanks for sharing. So does this mean that all the "crew" people are contractors, and not salaried? Kiff sort of alluded to it around the 12 minute mark.
Hi Paul, thank you. It really was a pleasure to be able to sit with Kiff and pick into these scenes. We could have done it all day. It is a shame about the scratchy mic, we all make mistakes!

This was equally educational and entertaining! Thanks folks.

Das ist so krass nerdig, ich liebe es. Bin kein Soundprofi, aber bin begeistert

Thanks for the video Ursa and Kiff's solutions are pure genius!
By the thumbnail I thought this was a grand tour behind the scenes but now I'm very pleasantly surprised as I've been waiting.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing. So many good tips/tricks but most of all, it's about planning and trial and error.

Great vid thanks - could we get a list of the kit used for this vid/future similar videos?
Another good knowledge I learned from this video

A quick question, whipping the cap off the DPA in this video, can you do that with the much smaller 6060's? Is the design the same with them?
Amazing info thank you
"Jeremy, my arm's come off!" cccccccccc:

2009….you had the brilliant 788T SSD / CL8….and the rest of the 7 series !
This was a great interview. Do one like this with the Game of Thrones chap! That guy saw some shit through the years!
Great interview with a top recordist, wonderful insight into his technique's. Little bit of clothes rustle going on with his mic though!
Hi Paul, thank you. It really was a pleasure to be able to sit with Kiff and pick into these scenes. We could have done it all day. It is a shame about the scratchy mic, we all make mistakes!
Absolute legend. But, someone please send him some Fiskars non-stick detail scissors! 😁
We will get him some for Christmas!
@@URSAStraps 😁😁👍👍
RIP TOP GEAR / THE GRAND TOUR 2002 TO 2024
Nice
Thanks Paul :)
They touched upon how they rig the car then got distracted by Vietnam then moved on to bear grylls 😭
Yer thats sounds about right. It was a bit free wheeling
the camera angle on the ursa guy is so unnatural. great content tho
