    I love this series because it constantly reminds me to go into my supplies and play with neglected goodies. This then makes me to evaluate the purchase, and keep or pass it on. Thanks, I think we all need this on a regular basis or we just became artist horders 🤣

    Thanks for this! I am exploring oil pastels. Peter's Art in Berlin is a wonderful, family run shop. If you are ever in Berlin, they are worth a visit. So glad you found them! I am currently enjoying the Jaxon oil pastels (made by Mungyo in South Korea, equivalent to the Mungyo Gallery MOV artist grade sets) which come in very affordable sets (less than €20 for 48 colours) and are available open stock. I am still learning to use oil pastels, and wanted something not too expensive but good quality still. I was glad to see you combine oil pastels with watercolours, which I had not considered doing. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Oil pastels are one of my favorite mediums, and has been since I was young. Like Crayola crayons, I would get a new box of oil pastels for Christmas.
    I haven't tried layering with watercolour, but I do use then like oil paint sticks with a touch of alkyd medium to help them dry completely. I also apply them like traditional soft pastels, without the need of the special boards or papers. Oil pastels are a convenient and responsive field sketching tool as well.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! Could you explain how you mix then with acrylic medium?

    • @andrewabney2129
      @andrewabney2129 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iritlandgraf Alkyd medium. Alkyd is a resin based medium that is solvent and oil soluble and typically used to modify oil paint to make them faster drying. Alkyds are dry to touch in a few hours, dry within a few days, and typically cured thoroughly within 7 to 10 days. Alkyd mediums come in a gel for (Lukas Painting Butter and Webber Res-n-Gel are my favorites), or as a clear to amber liquid. You can also get pre-mixed alkyd paints, but I find that problematic if you don't paint routinely. It doesn't take much exposure to start the hardening of the resin.
      For oil pastels, wax crayons, and oil sticks, I will either brush a thin coat of the medium on the support and draw into it, or lay the work flat and add a thin layer on top with a soft brush, and let capillary action draw the medium into the pastel.
      With the gel medium, it is more like painting, the gel medium gets mixed into the pastel with a painting knife or bristle brush either on the support or the palette.

      Interesting! Thank you for sharing! I love oil pastels but don't use them as much as I would like because I struggle to cure/fix them. Thanks again!

      I have some oil pastel drawings that are years old and never fixed. It is a durable medium, but like wax crayons gets a bad rap as being a child's art material.

    Peters Art is a great resource for Holbein products, I recently picked up some gouache. They also have the new Daniel Smith Master Sets in stock and you can find the Roman Szmal watercolors there.
    It is fun to see the stamp in action, I might pick it up in the future.
    Sennelier oil pastels are really soft, like a lipstick. The Caran d ache ones are good quality as well, I like oil pastels for mindless mark making. Cheaper brands don‘t have such a good color pay off.
    I tried the Paul Rubens oil pastels and they have pretty colors, they are really soft, but the pigment load isn’t as good as Sennelier/Caran d ache.

      Hi Irit- I’ve got a Tracy Lebenzon Wangi orange synthetic brush in medium with 1 inch long bristle in my shopping cart. This brush comes in 3 bristle sizes. May I ask which size bristle you recommend? No hurry with responding. Whenever it’s a good time for you.
      So exciting! Thanks so much for the discount!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Susan, just for future reference, the best way to make sure your questions are answered are either to post a new comment or of course email me. I don't see when there are new responses to older comments unless I scroll down my comments feed, so most times I will sadly miss those.
      My Wangi brush has 4cm bristles, so around one and a half inches? The length combined with the slightly stiff bristles works really well for me. If you are in doubt just contact Tracy, he knows which brushes he sent me and is extremely helpful. Also, don't forget to use my code irit for 20% off!

    Great video irit! The Jane Davenport colorsticks should be water-soluble. The reason they have that outer casing is because she was trying to mimic lipstick. The dramasticks are her version of wax pastels and they mimic eye liner or lip liner...not sure which but they are water resistant. The product line was called 'making faces' i believe. Personally i have the whole line but i never use it and im not sure why that is but thanks to you i might just reflect on it and figure out why! You never fail to inspire me, Irit! Im sending so much love your way! Lol go

    I have recently gotten into oil pastels. I bought the same set of Sennelier that you have and also bought a small set of Shiva Oil Sticks, artist quality, that are simply traditional oil paint in a stick and are not like oil pastels and will dry more quickly than oil pastels. They are simply oils dried out enough to be molded into stick form but with some medium they are nice and buttery and vivid...very high quality. And now, more companies are making non-solvent thinners and mediums for oils as well as water mixable oils, that seem to be just as good as traditional oils.. The the swatches I’ve done with the oil pastels, I just sprayed a fixative to them and that seems to stop the sticky and soft surface, but for serious art that I would keep or sell, I would spray fix a couple or 3 layers and then also spray on a light lacquer. I also have Gelatos and Marabu gel sticks and some others that I bought when I was doing more just paper crafting. But I have to say, I recently did a beautiful layered background with just Gelatos and if I didn’t know, I’d think it was done with something “artist quality.” If Faber-Castell make a gel-based pastel that was also lightfast, they would have a huge hit on their hands. I also just bought a beautiful set of Paul Rubens and Mungyo oil pastel sets on Amazon. Paul Rubens is a Chinese company who make the well-regarded Paul Rubens watercolors, also said to be very good “artist quality” as is the same for Mungyo. Thanks Irit!

      Thanks for sharing Nancy! I suspect oil paint sticks may work better for me than oil pastels, so may try them in the future. My issue with the ones I've seen is that the colors range is so much more limited than oil pastels, and I'm all about color! I'm familiar with Paul Rubens, have reviews some of their products on my channel but haven't tried the oil pastels.

    Really adore your color choices! 😍 Always so inspiring and this video is so helpful as I’m curious about oil pastels 🙏🏽💖
    But I did want to mention one thing about the Jane Davenport set in case you don’t know… be careful letting kiddos use them - EVERY product by Jane Davenport that I’ve looked into has a cancer warning 😐. Though I love Jane’s creativity & style, I got fed up with the CA Prop. 65 warning on everything, even things you wouldn’t think it would apply to 😕
    She does say on her website that the warning is mostly there for the packaging of her products & not the products themselves, but to me this is kind of a grey area since the products touch the packaging for a long amount of time & I’m not sure how much of the chemicals leach into the product with heat (common with plastic) or in other ways . This is especially worrisome when you consider that companies aren’t required to disclose just how much of the chemicals are in something 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄. I’d just rather not have to worry about it, personally. I purchased several of her books but left the rest.

    I totally agree with you on the higher quality products being the most fun. I don't mind playing around with less expesnive materials, there are actually quite a few that I like, but overall, there is a reason why artist grade is called artist grade.
    I am currently using the Mungyo Gallery extra soft oil pastels, which I really like and can recommend, and also a bunch of cheaper oil pastels like Jaxon, Faber Castell, an the Mungyo standard oil pastels. I want to get a set of Sennelier, and I have been wanting to get it for a while, but I keep forgetting about it, and when I do remember, the set that I want is always sold out. Someday I'm sure to remember it while it's in stock - hopefully. And I saw that they have a transparent blending stick, and I really want that one, I think that would be extremely useful. Also, I have seen on Amazon that Paul Rubens has a set of candy colored oil pastels, called Macaron Colors, and I think those look super nice. I actually thought about you when I saw those colors.
    I think oil pastels are great, I enjoy them a lot. I like using them on their own as well as combined with other mediums, mostly watercolors and colored pencils.

    Yay, oil pastels! I love them so much. I haven't figured out how I want to mix them with watercolors yet, but I know I'm going to mix them at some point.
    I've only got the Mungyo Gallery oil pastels for now, they're much more affordable than Sennelier or Caran D'Ache - definitely more appropriate for the size of my wallet 😅 I'm going to get a white Sennelier one though, I've seen that one especially recommended a lot. I know they're significantly softer than the Mungyo ones, so I do wonder how they'll hold up come summer when my crazy apartment with no AC gets almost 30°C on a bad day. Might have to store them in the fridge or basement 😅
    Also! There are pastel holders! I had the exact same issue as you and someone in the comments on a Frugal Crafter video (I think the big comparison on soft pastels) told me they exist and it kinda blew my mind. They're basically clutch pencils but for larger diameters. Jackson's has a bunch of different ones, but I haven't gotten any yet. So far I find I do pretty ok... For now... I'm sure that'll change quite drastically once I start peeling pack the paper wrappers though 😂

    • @iritlandgraf

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't use any oil pastels in a sketchbook. For hard and soft pastels a fixative is necessary for sketchbooks but with oil pastels I'd stay away. They are thick and oily and I doubt they would work

      Maybe student grade oil pastels? There are many that are a lot more waxy and harder than artists oil pastels, and I have used those in a sketchbook and then just put some baking paper between the pages afterwards. Maybe that would be something for your sketchbook? They are quite different from artist's oil pastels though, but maybe this would be kind of a good compromise if it's important to you that you can use them in a sketchbook.

      Hi! I answered on IG as well, I don't use oil pastels often so don't have essentials. I also don't believe there's such a thing as must have colors. Pick colors you love! Most basic I would say are white, transparent and gold if you like. I don't like dark colors so black is not essential for me, but may be for others.
