Sylvia Sydney was hit by a car. Burton didn't want to recast her, so he had her character in a wheelchair. She was amazing. ❤🌹🙏🏽🕯

Fun Fact: The executive producers gave Tim Burton orders not to kill off Jack Nicholson's character, so Tim Burton made a second character for Jack Nicholson just so he could kill him twice.
Also, that one line of Jack Nicholson's gets me every time. "Tell the people they've still got two outta three branches of the government working for them, and that ain't bad!"

It's a mediocre film
I think it plays better these days, but I've always loved the humor
That reaction when the disguised alien is sneaking up on Martin Short's character is exactly how my mom reacted when we watched this years ago. So, I learned to mimic the movements of the alien and would occasionally do that coming up to my mom. Same reaction as that, every freaking time. It was hilarious.

Mars Attacks is based on a 1962 Topps trading card series that featured aliens attacking and experimenting on humans and just destroying everything. Of course kids loved it, parents hated it and eventually Topps was pressured and stopped making them.
One of the most famous cards was of a Martian vaporizing a dog in front of his young owner called "Destroying a dog".
There are TH-cam videos that give you slideshows of the card series.
I still remember the one of the alien giant dogs just chewing on people. Gruesome :D

As someone who enjoys Slim Whitman (non ironically), I love that it's his voice that saves the human race. A true hero. Also, I heard there was a rumor that some at NASA wanted the Mars rover to play "Indian Love Call" while moving around on the Martian surface "just in case". Probably not true but it's fun to think someone might of considered it.
This movie made me a Slim Whitman fan.
So that's it... We haven't seen any life on Mars because the rover plays it over and over like a demented ice cream truck...

Independence Day came out the same year, everyone welcomed the alien visitors and look how well that turned out.

I always liked how those two kids, who liked playing at the arcades, were the most competent when it came to killing the martians in the white house and saving Jack Nicholson
they were amazing with that total "we trained for this" moment and courageously stepped up
lol that "What are you guys gawking at? Get that president outta here!" line always gets me too - short and to the point like they're completing an escort mission and moving on to the next stage/level

Jack Nicholson said he would do the movie but didn't want his character to die, so they created a second character for him just so they could kill him twice in the movie.
I honestly quite like how the humans didn't do anything wrong diplomatically. This is one of the few movies where the humans were more than accommodating, way beyond what they needed to be, and it perfectly set up the aliens as being irredeemable assholes.

With apologies to The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, this is the best movie based on trading cards that you'll ever find.

Oddly enough, not the last time Natalie Portman would give out medals after fighting off an alien invasion.
I love every Jack Nicholson scene particularly the scene between him and Rod Steiger when they are arguing over whether they should launch their nuclear missiles or not.
One of my all time favorites. I could see first contact going down like this. Absolute madness.😂😂

Oh hell yeah. About time you guys reacted this classic. The first 5 minutes alone is still memorable to this day. Used it all the time on VHS back in the day. This movie never gets old. It was a fun all star cast movie with an amazing musical score by Danny Elfman. Its one of the hightlights for me in fact. The Martians were such fun but dark villains. They almost always roast everyone and laugh at their own sick jokes. Such little bastards. Also pretty crazy that most of the cast ended up dying in the most messed up but interestingly funny and unique ways too.
I always thought it should had a bigger following than it got at the time. I blame Independence Day for this reason. In fact, fuck that movie! Mars Attacks should had gotten the awards instead!
Mars Attacks was way more badass, funny and awesome than Independence Day ever will be. Glad you guys enjoyed Mars Attacks. I'm glad people having been giving this movie the respect it deserved! By the way, the movie was also based on these badass trading cards from back in the 60's.
I absolutely love this movie! Great cast, hits most stereotypes, completely outrageous and ridiculous but fun. BTW, you sounded like Ninja Turtles yelling "PIZZA!!" Oh, and I love Grandma!
Funny as hell, and probably my favorite Burton movie (can’t top Beetlejuice; I grew up with it). Perfectly captured those 1950’s B-movies with star-studded casts.

The movie is based on an old bubblegum card series called, Mars Attacks. A lot of the scenes in the movie like the burning cows and blasting the birds are based on cards from the series.
I loved the Topps card series that this movie was based on. Topps also did a sister card set titled Dinosaurs Attack! I always hoped that Tim Burton would be involved in making that into a movie! They had a card titled "Crushing a Canine" which was akin to the MA card title "Destroying a Dog" -- yep, they went there. DA and MA card sets were known for the dark humor and gruesomeness of the art. I highly recommend looking up the card sets online to view them.

Ever after, we occasionally would 'Ack-Ack' at each other out of pure silliness.
Sometimes we had whole conversations, like about breakfast, with hand gestures communicating actual meaning more than the deadpan 'Ack-Acks'.

One the most underrated and one of my favorite Tim Burton films! The wacky b-movie classic 50’s Sci Fi meta humor fits so well in this. Love Danny Elfman’s Sci Fi score as well. Not to mention the crazy epic mega ensemble of a cast of A-listers that are in this film, crazy! A cult classic. Also Fun Fact: The Martians were originally going to be done entirely in Stop Motion Animation but decided to do full CGI instead.
Also another fun fact: You’ll recognize a couple of actors that were in other Tim Burton films like Nicholson or DeVito, but one you’ll probably won’t recognize right away is that the grandma in the wheelchair is played by the same woman who played Juno the Caseworker in Beetlejuice.

I always assumed their hatred of birds was related to their weakness to frequencies. 😂
The look on Ya'll's faces when Lisa Marie Presley does that shimmy. Certain scenes were creepy. When the Robot starts to chase the pickup truck, it reminded me of childhood dreams of being chased by giant things. As the audience left the theater, people were commenting on how some of the SFX scenes were cheesy while other were really good. That was the whole point. Recreate the look of 50's SciFi. It took several viewings before I realized Jack Nicholson plays two roles in Mars Attacks.
This movie was released at the same time as Independence Day. Quite a bit of contrast.
The burning cattle at the start of the film is a reference to Tim Burton’s amazing Ed Wood and its source material, the not so amazing Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Love this movie! Based on Topps trading cards. Great cast. And the Martian doing the “donut” sign(think it was actually their sign) is why the military guy greeted them with that and doves are symbols of peace but it scared the martians(although I think they wanted to take us over anyway lol). And the kids were good at blasting aliens because of video games lol
