      The traditional lakers always look better in my opinion. Especially lakers like the Arthur M Anderson, William A Irvin (a museum ship) and Edward L Reyerson, which is considered by many the most beautiful laker to ever sail. If only the Reyerson was put into service again…

    Man she's such a beauty and almost perfect lighting for her too. Beautiful job!

      @1Long2Short  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1Long2Short that's the perfect way to describe it ha! Especially since she is, in a way. I guess letting the residents know she's still around. She sounds a bit sharper and louder, too, than she has in past ones.
      I didn't either, then again, I only noticed it when I was coming back to listen again for a second time! I also had my volume way way up (not the best for my ears, but, hey, it's the Alpena!). This ones' up there with my favorite salutes, along with the 'Cort in the Fog' and one of the longer Lullaby like James R Barkers last year. She may not be a frequent visitor but I love her!

      Inland Lakes clearly must see a bright future for the Alpena. She’s a busy little ship if you track her movements! Her paint wasn’t in bad shape, but she’s getting a fresh coat to keep her looking spiffy. You don’t paint a ship whose days are numbered. 🙂

      @@1Long2Short I love 10 hours from Duluth so I’m lucky if I get to go there once a year. I was able to go there twice this year, and on one of them I saw the Kaye E Barker enter port. She’s the first (and currently only) traditional laker I can vividly remember seeing. Although I know there were more because I would draw pictures of the lakers and they had unloading booms. I wouldn’t have known about the booms if the only traditional laker I had seen was the William Irvin. But I hope I can get there next year, and maybe even see another traditional laker. Hopefully the Anderson (my favorite laker) or Alpena

    Alpena, like Michipicotin, is on a mission. Only this time, the cargo is cement. Lots of things to be built, and cement, like iron ore, is a vital component. So I wonder who's faster: Alpena, or Michipicotin?

    • @1Long2Short

      They are pretty evenly matched. The Alpena has a top speed of 14.1 mph while the Michipicoten has a top speed of 14.0 mph (according to Know Your Ships). Having said that, no ship moves faster through the harbor than the Michipicoten from my observations!

      The Alpena was very busy delivering cement to Green Bay this year, so I don't know if she was too busy to haul to Superior as well... or if Lafarge decided to use their own barges whenever possible. They've had their barges for some years now, but they've tended to keep them off of Lake Superior in the past. Hard to say what brought on the change!
