I purposely started with a cheap kayak (12' sun dolphin angler for 299). I did this to make sure I like fishing from a kayak and to get hands on experience to understand what features as important to me. 4 months later, I sold the first kayak for $225, and bought a Native Slayer Propel 10. I look at the $75 I lost on the first kayak as a great investment that led me to getting the right kayak from me.

Omg Alex you are so right!!! I took my nucanoe frontier out this morning with trolling motor and I spent more time removing grass from my prop and trying to paddle with all 100lbs of hydrilla on my prop sucks. So this evening i said screw it and grabbed my sea ghost 110 and went out. Lighter easier to paddle didn’t have to deal with trolling motor batteries and weight.
I spent over a year watching videos on what kayak would be best for me before I bought one. I did it all from searching videos on how to get into and out of one lol. It helped me a lot

That is so true, while I really like the stability of my Hobie Pro-Anger 14. Its a killer to transport(HEAVY) and I am sore for days following the fishing trip. I now have a Hobie Outback which is stable but not as comfortable but easy to transport on the back of the F-150. Weight is a HUGE consideration when you fish by yourself.
the outback is so light, so easy to transport, compare to the pa14 it is a baby
I have a big fish 120 which is about 100 lbs by itself. I got a strap-on cart for it for transport to and from the car/truck and it makes it so much easier. The cart I got also folds up quite nicely and ban be strapped on to the kayak when you are done with it. It really is a back saver.
I spent two years reading and demoing kayaks. My number one changed a few times during my thinking time and demo time. You learn a lot doing the demo thing which, where I live is not easy. I had to travel 150 miles to do the demos. I ended up with the Hobie 2019 Outback and have no regrets. Now that Old Town has come out with their sportsmen line they would be high on my list today but do not buy before you try,
After thinking about it for a long time and lots of research, I've finally bought a fishing kayak. I've been fishing from boats for 30 years, all sizes from tiny dinghies up to fast fishers, so I'm at ease on the water. I'm 6' 2'' and around 240lbs and the dealer told me not to make the mistake of buying something too small, so with his advice I finally settled on an Old Town Predator 13. I've seen this boat described as very heavy, I've tried loading and unloading it onto the roof of my car and it was no big deal, seems easy enough to me. I have'nt taken it on the water yet but I will soon, I hope it all works out ok.
did you take it out? when you hear "it is heavy" ' it is too big" look at who is saying that if it is a little guy under 180 yes that it is true but for you at #240 this is nothing
I had it out for the first time today Aliex. It's not too heavy for loading and unloading from the car, just a bit awkward but I've already figured out a few things to make it easier, I can load it and have it strapped on now in just a few minutes. On the water I had no problems at all. My friend came out with his boat "just in case", but everything was fine. I'm just using the seat in the low position for now. It's more stable than I thought it would be and I think you would have to do something really stupid to fall out. I'm really looking forward to catching some fish from it. I actually just got my first kayak, I went with a Feel Free Moken 10 v2. It was hard for me to find a decent kayak to fit my needs. I plan on fishing rivers and small lakes so I wanted a 10ft boat and but I'm 6ft 250lbs so I needed a good weight capacity and the moken 10 v2 has a 440lbs capacity so it fit my needs. I also went with the best paddle I could afford, a Bending Branches Angler pro plus. Watched countless videos from you and other youtubers before making my decision, researched for about 2 years.

Aliex, you did a good job on outlining some mistakes people make when buying a kayak.
The cost of a kayak is not the total cost of owning a kayak. Depending upon the kayak you buy and it's intended usage dictates the equipment you need. If you buy a big fishing kayak, you may want a cart for transporting the kayak from the vehicle to the water. Or, you may want to invest in a fishfinder/GPS unit, a back up handheld GPS, 2 way VHF GPS radio with DSC, 3 Day/Night flares, a good paddle, a good PFD, a light, extra rod holders, a white light visible 360° for 2 nautical miles, a battery, a fish kill cold bag, a safety flag, a whistle or a small klaxon air horn, a tow rope, flex seal tape, a bilge pump, and you may find it easier to purchase a kayak trailer for a big kayak. Know your budget and know what you can realistically fit into it.
Even if you are looking for a throw and go type kayak, there are other expenses to consider. A good paddle is always a must, a good comfortable PFD is a must. And like Aliex said, you must get a kayak that can support your weight.
Weight ratings on a kayak include the weight of the kayak itself. So, if the kayak is rated to hold 350 LBS and the kayak is 50 Lbs, the kayak will hold 300 lbs (in theory). You want to have a little extra cushion and not push it to its capacity. So if you weigh 270 lbs and want to bring 20 lbs of gear, get a bigger boat.
Comfort is king. An uncomfortable seat will make you hate the kayak. Seat position while paddling is important. You do not want to recline, believe me on that. Look for a kayak that has adjustable foot rests. Molded in foot rests can be uncomfortable and may or may not work for you as the reliefs may just not be in the right place for you and can actually be downright painful. If you get a sit inside kayak, invest in a spray skirt. Take a course that teaches you how to flip back over if you capsize without exiting the kayak.
If you have a sit inside kayak and you want a cheap flotation device, look no further than that soda bottle you just drained. Put the cap back on tight and chuck it in the bilge. Obviously it's not a one time event and it depends upon the size. Or, pool noodles work also, instead of those pricey flotation bags.
Do lots of research. I have a small fortune invested in my kayak. I figured it out beforehand. Get the highest quality gear that you can afford, your life may depend upon it.

I started with the Tamarack 110. I added a Pescador Pro 10 foot 3 years later. I battled the 10, 12 foot idea before my purchase. I assessed my need. I like the through the hill transducer mount and the quality. I enjoy paddling for fishing as well as exercise. This yak fits my size and need. I'm happy. I also realized I only need 2 to 4 rods and a small tackle bag. I replaced my anchor with a wind chute. Don't over think this kayak thing. Meet your needs and have fun. I got the 3 waters big fish 120 and couldn't be happier with it. I am a large person (about 380 lbs) and needed a big kayak. I got my big fish kayak and set out for my first time ever on a kayak last year. It was fantastic, and I couldn't be happier. The people at the shop we bought it from were very helpful in picking it out and knowing what would serve us best. The stability is exceptional and fishing is great. Though I am near the weight limit it is extremely stable and easy to use. I would have to work pretty hard at it to get it to flip or dump me. My mistake was not getting a strap on cart to help haul it from vehicle to water and back. It weighs about 100 lbs so carrying it without a cart requires a lot of energy and time that would be better used on the water. Once I got a cart moving it around was a breeze. Do yourself and your back a favor and get a cart if you need a large/heavy kayak.

I still have my Perception Stryker 11.5 that I bought from Dicks Sporting Goods for $500. 4 years later, I’m finally going to upgrade. A lot of my buddies upgraded to a peddle kayak a few years ago but I was still out fishing them from my Stryker. The only advantage they had was covering more water but I know how to read the water in the shallows from fishing from a boat.

I was caught between the Topwater PDL and the Outback. I fish mostly shallows and the Hobie flippers seem to work a lot better for my style, especially with the kick up fins. Keep being awesome Aliex! You’re the best.

Great video, my biggest mistake when i first went kayak fishing was after watching all the pros on you tube i kitted my self outnthe same way . Too much unesssesary stuff and all tethered to the yak. Well i didnt expect to get hit hard side on by a big spring swell and tip me while i had a big bass in the net on my lap with the lure tangled in the net and rod across the front of me . As i tipped i got tangled in all the leashes . You can imagine the fright and i had to prroper fight to survive , now i keep minimum essentials only . Safety first . I learnt the hard way

Great advice Aliex - I started with a Hobie Outfitter tandem so my son could come fishing with me. He has only gone out with me a handful of times so I was left to struggle with transporting a heavy Yak on my own. Could have purchased an Ocean Kayak Prowler demo for a fraction of the price which would have been much better for me.
My advice is start with a good quality second hand paddle kayak. They are cheaper and easier to transport than pedal drives. If you are looking at surf launching then a paddle kayak may be the best option.
Bought a cracked kayak for $100 and plastic welded it back together. Never had a problem past that but the kayak itself was only 9’3 and 34 inches wide complete barge and can’t be paddled. Didn’t fit my application with offshore like condition a mile or two from shore.(yes I know I was pushing the limits of the boat and it probably wasn’t safe.) bought it to get on the water but wasn’t smart about what I needed. Looking into a Revo 11 now with outriggers hopefully that will work.
I didn't make a mistake. But I want to share, I badly wanted a sit-on-top kayak for fishing on a very tight budget. After weeks of searching I managed to find a Point 65 Tequila Tandem that sat within my budget and fit my criteria. Because this kayak is in 3 parts, I was able to convert it to solo by simply leaving the second seat section off. To ready it for salt water fishing all I had to do was add a couple of rod holders and build a box for my gear. I built some pontoons too, but thus far have not used them yet. My best bit of advice for a beginner would be, buy a used kayak first. Customising it is a lot of fun and you can make drilling mistakes without too much stress. Repairs are fairly easy too. Finally, "GO LIGHT" on the fishing tackle. You DON'T need a massive tackle box behind you with tons of lures, spinners, etc. Unless you are Pro, then 1 heavy rod and 1 light rod are all you need. Always use a PFD and have a bottle of drinking water. Done!
great tips Aliex. i may have made all the mistakes. I did do some research - i bought a used kayak ( spent 400.00) and about another 200 in accessories) i didn't really have a budget, but i also didn't want to spend over 1,000 if it turns out i suck at it or don't like it. if all goes well, i will sell the used and buy a nicer one. and watch all your videos!
It took me several kayaks before I purchased a sit on top Kayak. I love the open cockpit and ability to move more. Not to mention, they don't fill up with water when you flip.

Aliex, love finding some vids I may have missed. But this was a great video.I learned all of this when I subscribed to your channel. I received my 1st ever kayak July 2021. I researched for a year while I saved. I do have a pacemaker, and a heart condition. So I'm actually disabled, but work 2 days a week by my state. So me weighing 151 lbs and 5ft 7. I knew I wanted a 125 by atlest 34" wide. And I knew I needed a kayak that would take a bixpy, and my trolling motor, made to factory fit my kayak. So this was my 1st season off the bank. Love my kayak, my bixpy, and trolling motor. I saved $800 by going with the paddle version so I could buy my motors. I do paddle only around my spots, or to exercise and for an emergency if all my electronics go out, or my bixpy dies, etc. And all your testing and what your channel is about many other things, makes me enjoy every trip. You hit on all of the major points I’ve learned. Probably the number one thing I learned is to take into account the way you will use it. If you have to pack everything up and go to a launch area, how hard is it to get it there and get it in the water? I really wanted a 14 foot kayak, but when I demoed the kayak and tried to unload it myself, it was clear to me there was no way I could handle it by myself.
Hey bud, I made the same mistake as you did in your story. I bought a vibe sea ghost 130 and it’s a great kayak but not the best for fishing in high current. My wife and I both bought the same boat different colors. She used hers twice in three years. I should have just invested in a nice pedal fishing kayak.

Did my research for the last 6 months....fished in a cheap perception and like it a lot better than hauling my bass boat around....so I just purchased a old town 106 pdl angler...it'll be another month before delivery...cant wait

I missed up getting an inflatable kayak even though it been great kayak but I need hardshell so I got piont 65 do better accommodate my paddling style because im strong all 18 people we kayak with has one I feel in love with it and got a second hand one and trading my inflatable
Once again another great vid. I wouldn’t say it was a mistake but I started with a cheap sun dolphin to see if I would like kayaking. When winter hit in Iowa I made the decision to upgrade to a pungo and loved yakking even more because of the comfort. A few years went by and after a cramped camping trip I got a kayak with more storage for gear but kept the pungo. Now I have ordered a hobie for fishing and can’t wait for it to arrive so I can hit the water and hopefully land some good fish. Every time I hear someone talk about their first kayak I tell them to start cheap but keep in mind the seats get better and you can upgrade later when you know if it’s for you.
My first purchase was a used Ascend 12t for $300. Loved it. Stable and open layout. I love large kayaks since I do a lot of bay and flats fishing (saltwater) and most times carry extra gear, like a grill. Lol. I was leaning towards a pedal kayak (BigFish108) but I also wanted that iPilot. So I ended up pulling the trigger on the new Ascend 133x and will be mounting a bowmount iPilot MinnKota trolling motor on it. All for around $2400.

I like my Brooklyn Kayak Company ra-220 but wish I had done more fishing before getting it. I like all the storage but wish I had more deck space. Would probably have gone with something like the Vibe Shearwater or the Seastream Angler 120.

My biggest mistake was buying my first kayak on black Friday and not having a way to travel with it. Getting roof racks on my van wasn't cheap. I should've budgeted that expense in before I made my impulse buy.

I had a good experience with my first yak, I bought a Big Fish 105. Overall still really like it but after fishing it for a year I realized that I hate not moving while fishing so I want a pedal yak. I researched a year for my big fish and I did about 3 months of research back early 2020 looking at the big fish 108 but knew i didn't have the money for it so put it off, now im looking at the 108 and the new old towns, still trying to find someone to let my try their yak, got a few people who have the old town top water on my local fb page but nobody seems to have the big fish

@@golforfishing no I ended up getting an old town sportsman pdl. I wanted something I could pick up at a store and I couldn't find one for the 108 in Minnesota. That and the old town is lighter.
@@Nozomivamp Great choice on the Sportsman PDL, I might get it too. But the reason why I was looking at the Big Fish 108 is because boy oh boy when the winds pick up and the water gets choppy it's even scary in a 14ft aluminum with a 10hp motor. I'm in southern Ontario 1.5hours north of Toronto so I fish the Muskokas mainly. I wish there were places with a large selection that I could test kayaks.

Yep, so true! I bought a hobie tandem island for the family. They went on it once and that was it. I ended up selling it because it was too big and heavy. I ended up buying an old town top water pdl 120 after watching your videos.

One thing I am guilty of. I have a bigger kayak. So I have a habit of taking everything up to and including the kitchen sink with me. I am making a conscious effort to pare down what I take on the water. For example, I don't need the whole tackle box. I normally use a selection of soft plastics and maybe one or two plugs. So that huge tackle box stays at home now.

I just got my Jackson Bite FD today and took it right to my hood lake to try out. I decided to actually flip myself off it to see where the tolerances were and to get all my adjustments right. My mistake was that I didn't tether everything. One thing I do NOT like about the Jackson is that I have to have the seat all the way up to pedal right.... and the seat blocks the door from popping open if the drive is retracted. My other mistake was that I forgot to tighten the seat lol and I flipped backwards off it.
Wow what an experience, I remember I flipped on the big fish 108 on the surf because I was looking at the drive.. Didnt pay attention to the waves.. Did you recover the seat and your stuff?
@@AliexFolgueira Yea got the seat and everything. I did this in about 3ft of water so I could get back on and play it off like I never fell in case someone was watching. I will say...that flex drive is fast!!

I am watching your videos occasionaly from the time you had 1-2 thousands subscribers. I didn't like the channel a lot, but somehow it was nice to see you turning those kayaks in your swimming pool😄. Today I subscribed to the channel, because in the last couple weeks I have seen a lot of videos on your channel and they answered 90% of the questions I had about kayak fishing. I think you deserve to have a lot more of subscribers and views because you are honest and yourself (you are not attractive to watch, but you are holding your ground-respect for that) while preaching some pure quality informations. You may not know how much you are helping us (who wants to start the kayak fishing), but I want you to know that I appreciate your effort.
I would like to ask you for advice on which kayak should I choose. There is a lot of info on your channel, but I am in a very specific situation, and it is hard for me to decide. I live in Norway, and kayak fishing is not a big thing here. My guess is because of the cold water (from 40 to 60 degrees max) and the dry suit would be mandatory. It is much easier to fish from the boat here, but I really want to do kayak fishing. In addition, I don't have a lot of kayak experience, but I had one kayak fishing trip and it was amazing.

I wanted to support s local small shop that had been in business 30 yrs so i did and i didn’t drive an hour or two to compare. Big mistake. After i bought i found out he sells whatever he has in the store instead of place an order or sending me to a competitor. I thought since he was in business a long time he would be honest.
Third mistake was my mistake. I bought a 12’ kayak, big mistake. Too big for me and heavy. I thought it’d be easy compared to my ten’. It sat for a awhile then I finally sold it.

Recently purchased my first kayak old Town predator PDL... Do not feel like it was a mistake at all I love my kayak... But it was barely within my budget and I didn't quite realize how expensive everything else was going to be. That! Was my mistake. Like I just now ordered my wetsuit online and I live in Oregon so even that's not going to be adequate to be able to fish year round
this is an easy mistake, to forget about the other THINGS we are going to need, thats how many companies make their money, on accessories

Just to add: the biggest mistake I see is people buying the WRONG size kayak for the type of water they want to fish. Guys get 10’ yaks and want to go out on the Great Lakes or offshore. So dangerous. Bigger is better for big water. Good vid cause I agree with your points.

I'm 250 lb and want a kayak that's stable for fishing, easy to paddle or pedal, and light enough for me to handle by myself. Does such exist? I have a Jackson Big Tuna but it seems a little more difficult to paddle as it's 14' and a real wide tandem kayak. It's awesome on the water for fishing but difficult for me to carry by myself. Not impossible but almost. Any single person kayaks that would be highly recommended you've personally tried that can survive river fishing?
1st thing I consider before getting any fishing kayak, was how good of a swimmer I’m I. Then look at PFD’s and then all the dangers that came with fishing kayak, drowning, getting tangled in fishing line, with hooks, not knowing how to get back without a paddle, so on and so on. Then I watched videos, like Aliex for about 6 months I researched and researched like Aliex said. At the end of it all it came down to the 3waters big fish 🐠 105, why. Stability. like Aliex says any kayak can be flip, For me I’m 5’6” 150 lb it’s a great fit. My budget 1500$ that includes PFD Paddle And fish finder. Ok I went over budget lol. But your right Aliex Research it. Tight Lines!

I bought the ascend FS128T for 200 bucks couldn’t pass it up I’ve used it a couple times I think I’m gonna upgrade to the old town sportsman 120 PDL

it seems like the pole holders and a paddle holder clips are all in the wrong spot on my ascend so time to upgrade.

I want kayak 27-18 inches wide and 15.x feet long, fast and stable, such as old Ocean Kayak Prowler 15 hull design. For me, it is perfect design but just need the cockpit improved.
Ty Do, look also into a Jackson Kraken 13.5 or the one I have which is the 15.5 model. These are no longer made. But. They are a quality ocean kayak. Forgot to mention the 15.5 is 29.5" wide.
Man i started with a nolimit kayak 10footer sit in found out it had all kinds of limits. If you fart in that thing youll flip.

It's funny, I made the same mistake as you. My first kayak was lifetime manta that I made into a fishing kayak. I thought I was gonna take my family and only took them once

you always hear something, if you use spinning gear, you will hear the ruunnnn, even if the fish is not big enough you will notice something. sometimes you dont lol

My first kayak was bought for the same reason as you.. how do I reach that spot.. then I got it and found the smallmouth bass.. (insert deep bell tone sound effect) it was a field and stream blade 9'6" sit inside v bottom.. not a fishing kayak. Eventually I cut the seat out and put a tacklebox/seat in. Drilled put holes for rods🤣 Put a board on the floor and gave it a name #USS_SMALLIESQUATCHER
Now it's time to retire that lil feller and step up.. I'm gonna learn the hard way. Time to channel my inner electrician.
So if you made it this far I have 1 question.. what battery do you recommend for a full day 10hs of using a trolling motor? And what charger do you use?
Kayak v. Pontoon
Kayak: lose stability you rock left and right. Can be a fix but it wont be perfect. Nothings perfect. You risk another stress for a stress
Pontoon: you lose leverages, you now, rock front or back aka, rock from bow to stern, now you have to accommodate for the weight distribution or your going to drown yourself. Short story in a nut shell, if it were me i go kayak for all the inconveniences

New subscriber here but I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. Also been researching kayaks for quite some time. I’m a pretty big guy at 6’1” and about 270ish. I just don’t know which one I want or need. My plans are to fish the inland waters for reds in south Louisiana as well as the basin for bass & bream. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheap uncomfortable seat actually just too cheap a kayak I have enjoyed it but I would advise someone to get the best they can afford not skimp letting one I couldn’t stand on also my back gets super tight so get one you can stand up on first

I upgraded to a Hobie from a cheap Pelican. I thought I could easily rotate the kayak off the side of my RAV4. The weight of the kayak slid off the front and broke my sideview mirror. Embarrassing.

Hey Aliex I have a question, did you have any problem with the rutter control on the pelican 130 HDII? My cable keeps on coming undone. Any tips on how to fix it?
funny thing is i just dropped my the other day and it felt on the rudder, and i think the cables pop, i'll have to look into it. you can open the rudder handle box and look inside, even replace them... contact pelican if you need replacement

I’m trying to decide between a yellowfin 100 and 120 for my first kayak..i have a 2 door Jeep weigh 160lbs and fish freshwater lakes and creeks but possibly want to fish salt water flats. Any suggestions? I almost spent 3k on a hobie compass with all the bells but it’s my first kayak.

Aliex I gotta question I am really interested in getting into a kayak. Im land locked so just have lakes and rivers I live ten minutes from a reasonable size lake but not huge lol. I have one leg cut off below knee so I can paddle , I was looking at the pelicain 130 hd . their is one a hour away from me. Or should I get a cheaper kayak that you paddle , mode the crap out of it example put trolling motor twin batteries and just have oars as back up ? What would your recommend ?
I think the last option is better in this case, get a yak and motorized it, have a spare battery and paddle, boom

Hi, I'm not familiar with it, from the looks of it it has a paddling hull, should be easy to paddle, standing up on it will require some training, does not look bad you have plenty of cargo space and flush mounted rod holders

Hey. Just so ya know. I just bought a 10’ pelican angler. It’s a kayak but I highly recommend you look around. There are better kayaks for a little more. You can’t return a kayak so if you don’t like it you’re stuck with it.
@@chrisfederoff1047 they sell really fast where I am. I've considered buying one used but they go extremely fast, like less than a day. I'm definitely going with a pedal drive and I do not want a typical propeller I want the fins and I am not paying for a hobie. I have heard from several people that the new pelican hydryve II is much better than the original. Hobie has a cheaper pedal version but it's far from ideal to fish out of. I plan to put about 1000 into just accessories, not including all of my fishing gear.
Can I ask what you didn't like about the pelican? I had an old town 12' paddle and I didn't like the flex in it and I thought the pelican would not have the flex since they are made differently.

No kayak but a canoe. Too big and flat. Didn’t track and hard to handle with just one person. Not nimble enough and no tracking equals a long day paddling.
