The first time I saw this film was in 1975 on Armed Forces TV when I was stationed in the Philippines. The film is simply riveting. The end is so well done...."I steal"..and then the dramatic fade to black. Awesome...
For my own part, I think this movie showed a lot of what life was like in the early 20th century. From the lack of jobs for returning WW I veterans. To the abject racism - I'm free, white and 21 - and the most important aspect....the existence of chain gangs and the duplicity of prison officials in the south. And finally, the man who finds himself without any place to go. The ending was truly sad to see.

Without question, fugitive from a chain gang is my personal favorite #1 movie of all time. It is a timeless classic.
Excellent film. They don’t make movies as well today as they did back then.
