This has probably got to be one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. The bomb scene, the riddlers riddles, the outfits, the Jokers moustache. Everything about this movie was so much fun and honestly, I want more movies like this!!!!
Thanks for watching! Have a bat-tastic day!

Check out the actual TV series. I think series one is better than the movie and series 2 was just as good. Series 3 was just OK.

In the USA (and other North American markets), we call them 'seasons' not 'series' (because the word 'series', here in the US, refers to entire different show). The 1966 TV series ran for 3 seasons before being cancelled, while in the 90s we also had 'Batman: The Animated Series'...😉
This is to clear up the wording confusion for other people, especially in the USA/North American markets....

Catwoman in the TV series (Julie Newmar) was the best of all time. It’s a drag that she didn’t appear in the movie.

To give you some context... originally this movie was supposed to be the pilot film for the TV show (introducing all the major characters and several villains featured in the film) BUT at the time, the ABC TV network needed to fill an open empty time slot, so they rushed the TV show into production putting the movie idea on hold for some time later (the movie was used as a pilot in other markets throughout the world that has not aired the TV show yet). After season/series 1 was a huge hit, the producers spoke with 20th Century Fox about making a feature length movie based on the TV show which they did (and which the movie also became a moderate hit as well because of the popularity of TV show in various parts of the world). The movie fits in between the end of season/series 1 and the beginning of season/series 2 of the Batman TV show and the various gadgets/vehicles used in the film (other than the batmobile which was made for the TV show first) were saved & used in many of later episodes (saving on production costs of having to make new ones)...Now there were plans to do a 2nd Batman film based on the TV show featuring Batgirl and other villians (Mr. Freeze, Egghead, The Mad Hatter & King Tut, etc), however the 2nd movie was scrapped/cancelled when ratings for the TV show started to slip between the 2nd & 3rd seasons/series...also the Batman TV show was going to be renewed for a 4th season/series by NBC (but in the time after ABC cancelled the show and before NBC could do so, it was discovered that hundreds of thousands of dollars of the Batman TV sets had been dismantled and destroyed. Rather than to spend thousands of more dollars to rebuild all the sets, NBC dropped the renewal idea sadly). ☹️

"Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb!"
This was made along with the 1966 TV show, in between season one and two. This was when superheroes was taken really seriously.
Fun Fact: Scenes shot in the arch-criminals' headquarters lair were filmed in a dutch angle. This was intentional and was meant to show that the four villains (Catwoman, Penguin, Joker, and Riddler) were crooked.
Bonus Fact: Julie Newmar (Catwoman in the TV series) does not appear in this film because she did not know about it and had signed to film the racy comedy Monsieur Lecoq in the U.K. By the time she was informed, she could not get out of the other commitment in time to do this movie. Monsieur Lecoq was subsequently abandoned and left unfinished.

When Adam West and Burt Ward were rehearsing their roles, they spent a lot of time discussing how to go about it. They decided that the only way to play them was serious with an over dramatic touch, (paraphrasing), because if they were as "campy" as the Villains it wouldn't work. What we get is a new form of camp from Adam and Burt that __seems_ serious, at first, while really it's as campy as everyone else; it just doesn't match. So, Batman and Robin's performance stands out. I remember Adam West saying once that if they were going to be running around Los Angeles in leotards, no one expects "high drama", but to not care and make a joke of it would sour the audience. They were amazing actors to pull off what they did, because _Batman and Robin_ was *Huge,* back then. It also helped that all the "Bat items" were straight out of the comics, and looked amazing. The _George Barris_ Batmobile is THEE Batmobile. It's still the best, and Adam West will always be the best Batman, because he worked so hard to keep audiences from "hating" his performance. No one, but Adam could say lines like, "send down the Shark Repellent Bat spray." or "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb." and have audiences on the edge of their seats. lol
Also, Robin's "answers" are straight out of the way popular "joke books" were written then. Sample: What's green and says, "Hi Yo, Silver?" The Lone Pickle...I'll show myself out now

Glad to see you're getting the humor of this series. The producer and writers intentionally made it in a way that the kiddies would take it seriously(and we did!We were convinced Batman and Robin were going to drown in a giant cake made of quicksand at the end of one cliffhanger!),while their parents and older siblings would snicker at the jokes and over-the-top silliness. It's one of the few things from my childhood that I get more out of as I get older. And more important,it saved the Batman comics from cancellation with soaring sales!

24:48 'You think these are just random people and they're looking at these two running around in Batman costumes..'
    Perfect assessment.
You just described Producer William Dozier's concept behind this version Batman.
Some folks hate on this series because it is "silly" and unrealistic.
But the Producer simply said what "WOULD" be the realistic reaction of our ordinary world to two goofballs running around in costumes and capes.
Your wrap up was also a reason why I prefer Batman '66 to many of the newer, darker, interpretations: it was a lot of fun and you could be 5 years old and enjoy it or you could be 55 and still enjoy watching the film.

Unquestionably, "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb," is the most-quoted moment of this film. For good reason. The weird comedy worked on TV, but nobody was going to pay a ticket to watch this on the big screen, especially after having seen basically the same gags on television already.
The TV show was an oddity. D.C. Comics in the Silver Age were played straight (though with some very silly ideas like The Legion of Super-Pets), but the TV show went for 'camp' (and indeed was the first time many people had heard that term), unexpectedly and very successfully. Part of its charm was that as silly as it got, there was no laugh track (a late decision), and the humor was, as you see, delivered deadpan. And grade-school kids and pre-teens even took the stories at face value as engaging adventures. Before long, all sorts of actors were eager to be 'special guest villains' in the show.
The Brits, according to a slang dictionary, use the phrase 'good thinking' ONLY ironically, and the full phrase is 'good thinking, Batman'. Along with 'Holy [whatever]', this show influenced language for a while.

Boy, this sure brings back some childhood memories. LOL! The actors playing the villains here played the same roles in the TV show, with the exception of Catwoman. With all due respect to Lee Meriwether, who was a fine actress, she just didn't bring the same flair to the role that Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt did. Newmar is the actress most identified with 1960s' Catwoman. She played the role in Seasons 1 and 2, and she was great and a lot of fun. But Kitt, who took over in Season 3, was my favorite by far. There are some brief clips of them in the role on TH-cam. You should check one out for each on your own, just so you can also say you've seen all the various Catwomen. 😂
There was a trend in the 1960s to parody/spoof serious movies-spy movies, in particular. (Get Smart was a popular spy spoof that aired on TV around the same time as Batman.) Both this movie and the TV show were intentionally cheesy and campy. So, yeah, at no time in this movie were they ever trying to be serious or develop the characters. Glad you had fun with it!

No this was always intended as a comedy even back then but as a Batman fan I like to think of this as a serious version of Batman as a comical version of 60s Batman come to life I've always considered Adam West a canon Batman and one of my personal favourites as well as Michael Keaton those two are the definitive Batmen. This movie is a spin off of the TV Series that ran for 3 seasons from 1966 to 1968. Caesar Romero who plays The Joker in this refused to shave his moustache because that was his signature look as an actor so they had to paint over it as best they can but it is very noticeable.

The 1960's comic book Batman wasn't particularly goofy. Aimed at pre-adolescents, it had simplistic stories and character motivations and was heavy on action and gimmicks (like cool gadgets for the heroes and villains and fantastical characters and scenarios right out of sci-fi and fantasy). The TV show was a brilliant spoof of the comic that kids could enjoy for the adventure, and adults could enjoy for the parody and social satire.

90% of the villains in the series were legendary character actors, many of whom had been blacklisted and found career revivals in the show. Burgess Meredith (Penguin, and yes, Mickey from the "Rocky" movies) was a magnificently versatile actor. One of his notable movie roles is George in "Of Mice and Men", and he made several appearances in "The Twilight Zone", especially in "Time Enough At Last". Frank Gorshin, who was Riddler, was a comedian and impersonator (th-cam.com/video/eP-cCgXLxiQ/w-d-xo.html). In the series, Catwoman was played by two other actresses, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt. Neither was available for the movie.

If you are amused by 60's Batman, another amazing farcical epic of the period is The Great Race (1965). A movie that no one has ever reacted to, and it's a legend with an amazing cast: Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Peter Falk, etc. It's a cult classic and a tour de force homage to the previous 50 years of comedy cinema. It also still holds the record for the most expensive pie fight in film history.

Oh, BTW, Ollie... Look, you can't try to make sense of anything that came out between 1965 and 1975. It's one of those, "you kinda had to be there" things. I was born in '67, but I remember watching this show as a small child. Many of the riddles used were actually kids jokes. When people talk about "The 60s", they are actually talking about the late 60s and early 70s. If you look at music from the time period, you'll see a distinct shift around 1965 from the "clean cut, lighter rock and roll" to the more "Psychedelic" stuff with the "long haired freaky people" (aka "Hippies"). The Psychedelic influence lasted until the mid 1970s, and it even trickled down to children's programing. I can list some shows that we watched as kids, that would blow your mind. Let me know if you're interested. I'd love to see you do some of those things.
Also, yes, the "Campiness" of this movie (and the TV show) were well intended. Because back then, you could only get away with a certain level of violence (unless it was "News" broadcast in the dinner hour about Vietnam) in daily programming, especially when it was likely to be viewed by children. It had to be a more "cartoonish" violence, where no one actually got hurt. Knocked out briefly, you can get away with. But no blood, and they had to recover to normal. You'll notice, when the "bad guys" were rehydrated with the Hard water, they simply vanished. No blood, no nothing. So, it fit with the standards of the time.
Ooooh... 15:19 - Oh, there was to be NO overt sexual references back then. Hell, women couldn't even show their belly button on TV back then. Which is kinda funny, if you think about it, because in Planet of the Apes (the original 1968 movie), they showed the astronauts bare butts on screen, and had some level of blood, and all of that was not only Rated G at the time, but it was allowed to be shown on television without an edit. I mean, everyone has a belly button, and a butt... what's the difference? Except that one was on a female, and one was on a male. Female, "Nope. Not allowed." Male, "Yeah, okay. Nobody will be turned on by that."
22:10 - Imagine, if you will, being exposed to this movie at the age of 5. I mean, granted, the message there IS a good one. "They may be drinkers, but they are still human beings." It tells you that even though they may not live up to your standards, they are each still a person, just like you. You shouldn't judge them too harshly, no matter their flaws. We could use more of that kind of message these days.
23:33 - Remember, kids: Never take drugs from strangers. But if it's someone you know, it's A-Oh-Kay!
26:28 - Oh, while I think of it. The Robin costume that Burt Ward had to wear, originally didn't fly with the censors. They demanded that his groin piece be "stuffed" so that you couldn't tell that he was a male, if you know what I mean. Burt has said over the years that it was really uncomfortable to wear, and he really grew to hate it. I can't really blame him, though. Also, I noticed that you failed to notice the "Bat-phone" in the Bat Mobile. This was absolutely unheard of at the time. Cell phones were decades away at the time. Yet Batman had one.
29:55 - Lyndon B. Johnson was President of the US at the time of this movie. He would be replaced by Richard Nixon in the 1968 election.

Batman was a dark, usettling character for the first 30 years or so of his life in the comics.
This, and the accompanying TV series, changed his image. For a while.
The new movies, starting in 1988, slowly took him back to his roots. More or less.

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The Batman stories from the first year of his existance (1939) are very dark and unsettling. But once Robin is introduced in 1940, and the rogues' gallery begins to develop, the tone changes. There are still stories that feel dark and noirish, but many stories include colorful, fantastic elements, and above all, there's a sense of fun in the interplay between the caped crusaders that I find disturbingly absent from modern Batman stories both on film and in print. This was the Batman that lasted 30 years -- not a lone vengeful, angry guy with a bad attitude, but a skilled crimefighter who enjoyed his work in collaberation with a boy who was also a skilled crimefighter and an equal, competant partner in their joint crusade. Things changed in 1954 with the introduction of the Comics Code, and for ten years Batman stories got goofy and weird, including many science fiction elements and introducing characters like Bat-Mite and Ace, the Bat-Hound -- far goofier stuff than ever made it into the 1960's tv series. But by 1964 with the introduction of the "new look," there was already an attempt to make Batman and Robin more serious again, two years before the tv show premiered in 1966. By 1970 (only two years after the show's cancellation), Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams had re-introduced a darker, more unsettling depiction of Batman, and with Robin depicted as going off to college, many stories began to feature Batman working solo for the first time in 30 years. That was 19 years before Tim Burton's *Batman,* for the record.

Actually, you might be surprised to know that even in the very first issue he appeared in, Batman was a very serious character. I believe one criminal even died hanging from under the Batplane. The 60s Batman series is a loving satire, and it has aged quite well.

It's said that entertainment in the sixties was defined by the three B's -- the Beatles, Bond, and Batman.
I was 7 when I saw this in the theater... young enough to (at least somewhat) take it seriously. I had discovered Batman comic books a year earlier. The Batman TV show began 6 months before the movie, and Batmania was sweeping the nation.
Adam West and Burt Ward made personal appearances, in costume, at many movie theaters, and I did get to see them. It was an exciting time.

This genuinely is my favorite Batman movie. I guess for me I always thought comic book heroes were meant to be fun and silly. And I think this movie just captures that so perfectly. Not only is this movie genuinely funny but when you think about it this is by far the most creative Batman movie out of any Batman movie and what's so cool about it is that it's not afraid to go all the way with the most absurd and out there ideas. There are other good Batman movies of course, but would any of them have the guts to have the imagination this movie has? I feel like no other Batman movie would do what this movie does. And really this should be appreciated because realistically we will never ever get another Batman like this again. This movie is special and in my opinion the very best Batman movie ever made.

I got to see this in the theater in 1970 during a Saturday matinee re-release. The TV show was going through a 2nd life at that point in syndication and elementary school boys all over the country and were watching it every afternoon after school and me and my gang were huge fans. All the humor went right over our heads and you would have thought we had gone to see the Dark Knight we took it so seriously. However, walking out of the theater we all agreed the shark looked pretty fake.

Yeah, I never meant watch the TV series for the channel, but now that you know the general flavor of it, by all means hit some of them in your spare time, they're a blast. Fantastic, iconic opening and closing credits sequence. Watch the episodes with Julie Newmar as Catwoman, she is beyond brilliant in that role.

Nice to know Batman acknowledges me as a human being even though i drink lol. I love this film. In the late 80's in England they showed the series on weekday mornings before school, and about the same time i first saw and videoed this too. At 10 i didn't appreciate a lot of the comedy in the same way i do now, but i have always loved this, just now for comedy reasons. Just before Adam West died, he Burt Ward and the regular Catwoman from the series, Julie Newmar did two animated sequels to this, the first again primarily involved the same 4 villains, Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders, it was watchable. The follow-up was Batman vs Two Face, okish but as it was Adam West's last film i guess it made it special.

Because the show existed before the film, character development wasn't necessarily. The one noteness was how villians were written back in the day. I enjoy the classic blue/grey suit from the comics. The campyness is classic. I love this for what it is and enjoy the new stuff too.

  • @DCFCfanatic

Before this the only thing that existed in film from Batman were the two serials from the 40s. The first one was Batman (1943). it was a 15 part series and you had make your way to whatever theater was showing it. Every week there was a new chapter. They were short episodes and often times had nothing but filler where nothing interesting even happened. but they were made to get people to go to the theater every week. then came the 1949 serial 'Batman and Robin'. which was in 15 parts too. after this came the 1960s series with Adam West and this movie.

Other villains you got in the series you don't often see on film if ever include Mr Freeze (okay once in Batman and Robin), Book Worm, Clock King, King Tut, The Mad Hatter, and Egghead. It is rumoured that if there had been a sequel to Batman and Robin, Egghead was a strong contender as the main villain.

    • @jonbolton3376

In season 3 there was a fun episode where Dr. Cassandra organised a jailbreak of Penguin, Riddler, Joker, Catwoman, Egghead and King Tut. Obviously they couldn't afford all the guest actors so used stand ins in their make up and voice footage from previous episodes

    • @bobbuethe1477

Mr. Freeze first appeared in a 1959 comic book, under the name Mr. Zero. The Mad Hatter fought Batman a few times in the 1950s. Clock King was also from the comics, but he was a Green Arrow villain, not one of Batman's. The others that you named were created for the TV show.

Now you have to do the real grand-daddy of ALL superhero movies: "Superman" (1978). That's the movie that put superhero movies on the map. This "Batman" movie tanked and had a bad reputation, and it was with that in mind that we went into the '78 "Superman". It is so widely imitated - the origin story loop that they're even doing with villains now, it all goes back to "Superman" 'from '78. I remember thinking, "oh.....we're going to get Superman's back story?" I was almost disappointed at first! lol. DEFINITELY watch "Superman", you'll love it! Christopher Reeve IS Superman.

I like for most of the Batman/Catwoman times on screen they have that frenemy relationship "I know who you are but won't arrest you". Notice how Catwoman tripped vs. getting hit by a good guy? I think that was partly why they created Batgirl (should be Commissioner Gordon's daughter) - so you could have a woman take out another woman

Neal Adams provided the artwork, but Denny O'Neil wrote the stories that changed Batman's image in the early 1970's. O'Neil also worked frequently with artist Irv Novick during this period, and both Adams' and Novick's stories were often inked by Dick Giordano, providing stylistic unity to their combined output.

This is pretty comic acurate to the 1950s and 1960s the flying umbrellas is straight from the comics. Also fumny thing is the villains were mostly serious actors, the joker was cesar romero who was a member of the ratpack and a famous stage actor and was in many movies, frank gorshin-the riddler was an pretty famous impressionist- comedian, and burgess Meredith played in rocky, twilight zone lots of plays and was in alot of movie in the 40s. Lee merriweather replaced the series catwoman(julie newmar) was on a ton of tv shows. And caesar refused to shauve his mustache as it was his trademark.

I will add my vote to watching the Batman TV series from 1966. The episodes were basically 2-parts; first, Batman and Robin get into some kind of fix, in Part 2, they find some crazy way of getting out of it. These guys would put McGuyver to shame. Sure, it's campy. But as a kid, I loved it. Sometimes I steal Robin's line, "Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed," when I fire up MY black convertible and go save lives.
