  • Fleeing from a gruesome crime in 1850s Melbourne, at the height of the Australian gold rush, Mr and Mrs Jackson take passage on a clipper bound for England. But as the ship reaches the stormy seas off Cape Horn they find the past isn't so easily left behind...
James Edward Preston Muddock (1843-1934) was an incredibly prolific author who published stories of horror and mystery under several pseudonyms, including as 'Dick Donovan', the name of his most popular fictional detective. Although largely forgotten today, at his peak in the 1890s his stories rivalled those of Conan Doyle in popularity, and were frequently published in The Strand Magazine (where the character of Dick Donovan was one of the most successful contemporary "rivals" of Sherlock Holmes).
The original publication history of 'A Ghost from the Sea' is lost in the mists of time, but it almost certainly originally appeared in a periodical at some point in the early 1880s. It was later published in book form as part of the collection 'Stories Weird and Wonderful' in 1889.

Thank you. Yes, I always think it's interesting to see what the authors looked like... this chap actually was one of the hardest to find, I think this may be the only known image of him. Which is interesting given how prolific and popular he was in his lifetime

Please unearth more of Preston Muddock's tales? He was prolific, but his works are not easy to find today. As to the "complexity" of his prose, it suits his upbringing in Victorian times (born in 1843), and his language is no more complex than, for example, language of Henry James or Dickens. I enjoy his style. He puts us in the scenes with skill.

What a terrific story. Start leisurely with the history lesson on gold discovery touching on its effects on human nature and then the pace starts building up to reach the momentum with the murder and finally the cresendo with the death of the murderer. The words used to narrate the sea voyage is so descriptive like "ebony vault". No crime goes unpunished if only we have cognisance of this before we take this path that only leads to damnation.

Normally I don't get out much, but know I'm going nuts. Nothing has changed so much, just our concept. Nevertheless Holidaze is there. 😊to

I have to admit this author's style can be hard work and isn't the easiest to narrate, one of the reasons I've not returned to him for a while, although he was hugely popular in his day; I do still have a couple of his detective tales on my possibles list for the future due to the originality of the plot more than for stylistic reasons...

She waited a while! I wonder what the ghost was doing all the while the Jacksons stayed in Australia, but then maybe "sonambulistically commanded to jump into the sea" was more comprehensable a fate to the English public than "sonnambulistically commanded to walk into the bush/approach a kangaroo standing in water" (never look up nature facts about kangaroos. There is nothing that is not horrifying about kangaroos).

I tend to agree. His profound yet long and wearisome, turgid yet exciting, detailed and contextual, embryonic, illuminating, satisfying but testing, stimulating, solid, florid, changing, bedraggled, sweet, rambunctious, pestilent, bedazzled, bulldozing descriptions were occasionally interesting when I managed to get to the end of them.
