- Another short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, set at sea, in the Atlantic following a great storm. There's possible salvage on that Brazilian flagged brig yonder! What could possibly go wrong?
First published in Pearson's Magazine in July, 1897, as A Tale of the High Seas.
Read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

Having discovered this magical storyteller has been the highlight of the year!
I still don't get it. What was inside the chest?
Greg has the perfect voice for these stories. Crisp, precise diction to match the descriptive prose. Great company for my evening walks.
Thanks, Mac.
I liked this story, it was an interesting variation, especially when the culprit is discovered. I usually don’t comment my opinion of these stories because it’s difficult to accurately do so without giving things away to anyone! But I found this one relaxing and fun to listen to, not dark or morbid. Very well read, as per usual :). Another thankful listener, from 🇨🇦.
Truly a special treasure for us, your faithful listeners, thank you Greg!
Thanks as per Scotticus, for you kind words and support!
Love this one. You're the man, Greg! Thanks. I've listened to your readings SO many times. Never get bored. Just wish there were several hundred more. :-)
Mr Wagland hits the spot again. I had to re-listen as I fell asleep, not from boredom but due to his lilting tones. Excellent story, to the point, no padding and a nice twist. ACD is very consistent as is the narrator. Thank you.
Cheers pes nevim. Yes, you're right, he simply gets on with it!
Mr. Wagland is the narrator, but I know what you mean.
My favorite reader! Thank you for another masterpiece and carrying on a great writer's work beyond the grave
Thank you, Mark.
@4:40 pm preparing dinner and listening to you. Absolutely wonderful, thanks.💙🎠💙
Thanks Nancy. Glad you liked it!
Great story, and wonderful clear narration. Was a beautiful journey I hoped would lull me to sleep, but instead I remained awake and captivated.
Glad you liked it, Jacob.
Cheers
Same here. No lulling to sleep here either! Too good a mystery!
Greg my man. No one sends me to sleep as you do. Fabulous.. Thank you love.
I do my best Tracey!
Love this story! I felt that I was there! Thank you again Mr. Greg😍
Thanks Jeaninne.
Thank you. Tonight's going to windy and extra dark . Fireplace on and a dram of the good stuff with The Striped Chest...perfecto mundo
Man I need to proofread
Thank you Greg, always a pleasure to hear your smooth voice!
Ha!
I discovered your narrations mid summer 2021 and I am enjoying each new experience more than the last.
Another great story, masterfully told, Mr Wagland! Thank you!
Thanks virginia!
Once again a fantastic reading. Many thanks sir.
Thanks Sallyb1022
This is one of my favourites, Greg. Brilliantly narrated and so atmospheric. Thanks.
Ha, forgotten I'd already championed it! Must be good.
I’m spraying Lysol and listening to you! Thank you sooo much You are wonderful! Cheers 🍻
Cheers Ringpop. Go easy on the Lysol - a stout bar of soap and a bit of elbow grease should see you right.
Great narration! Thanks for your stories!!
Thanks impunitythebagpuss. Great name btw.
Excellent...as usual. Thank you so much
Another euphonic reading by Mr Wagland. Like another listener I fell asleep (very late, nothing to do with the narrator!), and woke up listening to The Devil's Foot which led to quite a bit of semi-conscious befuddlement in the wee hours. Great stuff!
Cheers Greg. Euphonic - great word!
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Thank the Greeks!
A Superbly narrated tale seasoned with a bit of olde English and "ol salt. I was plunged into the ocean of atmosphere, complete with foreboding and goosebumps. A work I have thoroughly enjoyed, and one I will gladly listen to again. Thank you my friend, four paw's up!! ((Hugs)) from across the pond. ♡♡♡♡
Lovely words, Greg, no doubt would be very happy to hear.... cheers.
Thanks Crazy for your kind words. It's not a bad little tale, and pretty atmospheric too. Glad you liked it.
I was and I am, JMF.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio excellent reading excellent stories thank you
and here I was thinking it would be full of striped pajamas. Thank you for another great read.
Ha!
Yay! Just laying down. Once again, impeccable timing. Thank you.
I do me best! Cheers Karen!
I would have bet my bottom dollar that the narrator of this story was the late Dudley Sutton ( Tinker from the Lovejoy series)
It sounds just like his voice
Greg Wagland is such a good voice actor that he can completely change his voice sounding so unlike any previous character hes just narrated.
Not Dudley, I'm afraid.
Thank you for another great read. Mr. Wagland is wonderful!!
Kind of you, Michael.
This was intriguing as per usual , your narration is superb .
Thank you Hana. Comment appreciated as per.
Thank you again Greg, your narration again took me somewhere, some time other than my own. Engaging.
Cheers Charles.
another great reading. thanks much. and the guy below is right. sometimes falling asleep is a darn pain and your voice keeps one company and calm. :) ✨🐱
Thanks Alexa, although I was trying to be a bit less smooth and calm and more 'gruff old sea dog' in this one.
Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio LOL you were, but still your voice just calms me. who knows? :}
Great! Thanks, Greg! Greetings from France ❤️
Thanks Ann. Hope you enjoy!
G'day Greg, good onya m8, this is another 6 over the fence, such a bloody awesome narrator are you Wagz..
Cheers my friend, from Melbourne Australia. 😎🏆🥇🥇🥇
Glad you liked it, JMF! Those bushfires all out now?
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Worst is over now i think, i live in Melbourne, the fires were mostly South N.S.W, a good 5 to 6 hrs away, was really devastating to see footage/pic everyday though, God Bless em'....
"You've been hitting the booth a bit lately, bloody awesomeness from Mic to Me, cheers n thanks again Greg..

Thanks Morgan.
The reader makes the story fantastic
Thanks Kenneth!
Had to start over from my dozing off 3 times but enjoyed...finally.. every description and every gorgeous syllable! I am just discovering the ACD and W Team.. just love you two talented fellows! Btw I lived in Rio for 5 years... The name of the ship in case it helps... OUR LADY OF VICTORY.
Sail on into more of your lovely ACD finds! Thank you!
thanks Marcia. Dozing is very easily done with these I fear. Glad you enjoyed! Cheers
Walking in the park listening to this, coincidentally also standing on the poop.
Thanks, dog owners..
Now that's funny!
Congratulations. Another fine and amazing reading.
Thank you!!! I think I have heard almost all the stores you have read. You sir, have a great talent and a wonderful voice. Bless you.
So nice of you, Sloan!
YES! A new story, and ACD at that. Hell yeah.
Yes, back to ACD, Frank!
Great story, well read. Thank you!
A sea tale by the great Sir Arthur no way!
My husband is in the hospital with COVID. These stories are solace
Sorry to hear that, cynthia.
The treasure was the chest being made of gold
Oh! And HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU! Looking forward to those new ACD stories you alluded to in a recent post 😍
Same to you, Felene! Have a good 2021.
I liked this story.
You’re a Treasure
Really good. I don't remember this one.
Great story we'll narrated as usual
Nice.
Great work! Your audiobooks are a much needed distraction :)
I feel like a Tumultuous Brazilian right now Ya know?
Well, go easy. You know what happened last time.
Curiosity killed the cat
Because the curse will take thee
I've always wondered where the "low" seas are.
👌💕
I need one of these chests but not as "sharp" 😉
What are you using it for? Short back and sides? Topiary? Food processor?
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio LOL! It will scare off nosy family members who open every lid and door in my apartment when they visit... Dad.
** My father will think twice.
Archie Doyle can't tell a sea tale worth of his sea salt even if he were to be "married to the captain's daughter" on the "poop deck"!
For a tale of sails worth the Trades, give me an Old Tar like Sir Joe Conrad.
Yes, you're 100% right about Joe for the sea tales. Don't know if I should do some here or not!! Cheers Kenny.
mmmmmhh
Cutting down Trees 🌲🌲🌲🌲around are world from forests 🌳 to woodlands 🌳are releasing Toxins that the trees 🌲 have collect for years back into the Atmosphere and logging is cutting far quicker than planting around the world and adult trees 🌲 that take 45 years to grow store more toxins and carbon than just new planted trees does .
If the logging continues to carry on then the weathers around are world will become a lot hotter and very aggressive storms will become life threatening for humans just because humans can’t stop eating massive amounts meat 🥩 just because jobs and money are more important than life itself .
