Also wished Nutshell would have went mainstream, it’s a hidden gem both the studio and unplugged version. Someone said it’s Lane singing at his own funeral and Jerry’s guitar solo at the end is his last goodbye
I Remember buying "Jar Of Flies" and all my Alice In Chains CD's at a record store in Brooklyn. I remember thinking my favorite band is so far away in Seattle...So it warmed my heart in 1996 when Alice In Chains recorded one of their final Albums (AIC Unplugged) only 2 blocks from where I 1st bought Facelift right in Brooklyn...I could have never imagined they would end up in my neighborhood to do any recording or even be in Brooklyn at all! It was and still is magical!!
Indeed they were. Cut short in SO many ways. I've said many times, Jerry was a bull: he wanted to continue the band, constantly perfecting their sound, and riding off into the sunset like _his_ favorite bands; whereas Layne was a butterfly: very artistic, introspective, flitting from flower to flower, whichever tasted sweetest to him. He got bored easily, and by "Tripod," he was already more than halfway out the door, as Mad Season proved (as well as his other artistic pursuits like drawing and mixed media art). Jerry and Layne were oil and water by that point. AIC were an amazing monster of a band. But they were on the road to implosion even if Layne hadn't died.
The atmosphere, the depth, the tones, the overall sound, for me their best effort. Sometimes I have to be in a certain mood to listen to their self titled album or Dirt or even Facelift, but this album I can always listen to anytime.
I`ve been listening to this brilliant album on a regular basis, for over 25 years....this shit never gets old..it`s as fresh in 2021, as it was back in 1994, and I know, that when I listen to this beautiful nostalgig Masterpiece in 2058..........when I`m 90..........I`ll still love it........and it`ll still bring tears to my eyes. R.I.P. Layne Staley
Jar of Flies is great!! Rotten Apple is amazing!! Nutshell is a total classic .... Unplugged version rocks!! Layne’s voice is unbelievable. RIP Layne 💔
The greatest ep of all time. Every song is perfect. Dirt is the best, and jar of flies is literally right behind it. If you don’t know this album, I bet my life on anyone loving it. Perfect music
I believe that "Rotten Apple" is an AIC MASTERPIECE!!! I absolutely love the song. I remember sitting in my room underneath my black-lights, enjoying the music while in a semi-coherent state, blitzed on smack. The blurry warmth of opiates goes right along with the vibe and sparkle of these songs. This EP is a work of ART, and we are lucky to have been graced by the presence of Lane Staley for the few years he was with us on Earth. Rest in Peace, Lane Staley
I've always wanted to get Layne's shoulder tattoo it's not often I get so hyped about a band but I can remember pawning off some cds so I could buy facelift and here I am still wanting to learn more half a lifetime later...
I always thought that when pronouncing the name of the album "Jar Of Flies", I had a play on words according to the content of the lyrics and the life they lead with drugs, since when pronouncing the name of the album, it sounds like "Jar Of Lies". It's just my interpretation, and I share it with you. It's a great album, one of my favorites of all time !!! I love Alice In Chains.
I often wonder if Mike was not fired would it have stopped them pretty much breaking up. Jerry had Sèan to lean on and layne had Mike. Touring and gigs pretty much came to a halt. Mike and Layne still hung together till the end...I think once that happened ruined dynamic of the band...
I agree. I also wonder how much being fired from AIC affected Mike Starr. His life continued to go down hill he never recovered from it. Just my opinion RIP Layne&Mike❤
@@debby631 soul destroying for him and for Layne... I'd say Mike spend his time waiting to be invited back ....they were so so young when they "made it" and all dealt or tried to cope in their own way.. there was very little help or guidance back than..it was keep up keeping on. Imo.also 🥰
Yeah, idk. I’m thinking it’s unlikely. It seemed to me like Mike & Layne were close at least in part bc they used together. And although this comradery would give them both someone within the band to lean on, I’m sure it could have also created an “us vs them” paradigm that might have ripped the band apart even sooner…that is, if Mike & Layne’s drug use didn’t take them out first. Bottom line is drugs destroy EVERYTHING. The only way forward is when that shit’s left in the past.
@@evancain4906 yeah, I hope so too. It is confirmed to be a boy so that narrows it down by 50%. I'm guessing he lives or lived in Seattle so that narrows it down more, we will probably sadly never know.
Swing On This is the only song on their that I would say is bad. No Excuses is a little overrated, but it is still better than Swing On This. The rest of the songs on that EP are all fantastic. Nutshell, Don’t Follow, Rotten Apple, and Whale & Wasp are in my top 10 favorite Alice In Chains songs. I Stay Away is great as well.
@@evancain4906 The only part of Swing On This that I like is the ending bluesy section. The rest of it is not that great in my opinion. Swing On This is one of my least favorite songs by Alice In Chains and they are my favorite band. I think Don’t Follow is a much better finishing song to the album. The overall album is awesome, it just has a weak ending.
A year ago I'd agree but I've grown to like it though it wasn't a great track that matches the mood with the rest of the EP. Also it wasn't the best song to close Jar of Flies too. To me Swing on this is a bonus track much like Love Song from Sap
Also wished Nutshell would have went mainstream, it’s a hidden gem both the studio and unplugged version. Someone said it’s Lane singing at his own funeral and Jerry’s guitar solo at the end is his last goodbye
Most good songs don't go mainstream. It doesnt legitimize the art if a flock of sheep like it or not.

Whenever I'm having a rough time I go right into AIC mode. Something about this band that will always make life a little more bearable
I really feel AiC were a band cut short. They could've done so much more if Layne had been into it.

@@jekku4688 It's true, they would've broken up either way...
Black Gives Way To Blue was a great return album by them but I admit that the follow up albums were definitely not as strong at all
Honestly every album AIC recorded Layne era was LEGENDARY all quality no filler.❤RIP LAYNE AND MIKE
A-fucking-men!
This album was first time my Dad said "who's that?" Of all my music I was listening to in early-mid 90s. He bought the tape.
Haha your dad story reminded me of this - maybe you've seen it...

Dirt and Jar Of Flies are the best albums that came out of the 90s and definitely of all time. Every song is very well produced, and never gets old!
One of the best albums of all time

Really like your videos.... please do something covering the solo albums Jerry did
And Do one on Devil put dinosaurs here...I love that album
My favorite record alice ever did.
I listen to jar daily.
It's my home, my youth, and my cry fir serenity 😪💌❤️🩹🧠🤘
Wish that Alice would have played Rotten Apple, Stay Away,Swing on this at the MTV unplugged...
Mad Season/"above" is best album of 90s. Which means all-time
I never heard that version of No Excuses with only Jerry singing. He almost sounds like one of the Beatles here.
Awesome album
Got it the year i enterd highshcool I still listen weekly
Nutshell is such a good song, it's definitely my favourite AIC song!

Good content!
I was 16 when this dropped. Amazing
I was 15 have only recently gotten into it
Lol, that's pretty bad if you get fired fr AIC in early-mid 90s for doing drugs.
It was more than drugs tho
I v bought jar of flies in praga, just released, during a trip with my school.
hey Dudeman, what version(s) are those AIC songs that you interspersed in this video???

Interesting...although they were incredibly honest with their lyrics and what they were going through so it doesn't necessarily fit in my opinion.
My favorite loved rotten apples
Don't Follow is great
