    Ahhh my favorite mono of all time. A wonderful and fun instrument. KORG really struck gold with this one, and somehow, it never aged. No matter the decade, the MS20 always sounds modern.

      You can't beat hardware! There's something about owning an instrument that keeps you interested. I really like tuning the oscillators a 5th or 7th apart, adjusting the cutoff and resonance to get some nice harmonics and running it through a big reverb.

    I bought this synth in 1996 and I never left it eversince . And there is something magic about it. All the people coming to my house were attracted, musicians or not: "what's that thing?" As soon as they started to play with its knobs, I remember a blues guitarist, a classic pianist, a heavy drummer, some fathers and mothers (mine inclusive) smile like kids! I don't know much about re-editions, but the original one is a pure gem, able to communicate with dolphins in a desert island!

    In my life I've sold 2 synths. First was a DX7, second was an MS20. I regret both more than if I'd chopped off one of my arms. My current favorite synth that I own (that no one seems to care about) is a Roland SH-1, followed closely by my Ensoniq ESQ-1 . The Roland is Fat with a capital P H. I can't believe it's not more popular. The Ensoniq is like the DX7's long lost cousin.

      Yep, comes into its own once you start messing with that stuff. Plane flybys, flying saucer takeoffs and landings, cars, motorbikes, animals, just so much fun... This was my first synth in the early 80's and I used to just sit there for hours at a time with a handful of patch leads just messing about and annoying the hell out of my parents and neighbours. Built a harmonics generator for it (ran off the oscillator(s) output) and that just added another layer of fun!

    My favorite (with my 800DV, bought in may 76). I have my MS20 since 1978 and I love it so much that I bought each and every iteration of it since then (midi, mini, kit, and even the Nintendo DS version for my grand-son!). Never failed me (and with time, I accompanied it with all his friends, M210, MS50, SQ10, MS02, MS03, MS04, MS2000...! and thinking that in the late 70s early 80s, I was snubbed by friends of mine who owned minimoogs or Odysseys (that I couldn't afford then :-)). I've always used extensively the patchbay (hope you make another video showing its features) and in the early 2010s, quite often with its processor to treat (and be triggered by) my Theremin!

    I had that lovely beast for a long time, it's really miracle synth. It amazed me with all sound possibilities and sonic nuances. It was never a Moog, but no Moog was ever MS20, so...
    Maybe you could once show us some patchbay possibilities - there lies a hidden treasure :) - delayed vibrato, random function (sample & hold), games with noise oscilators, you can add modulation to this or that, envelope generator to this or that, etc etc. And finally, there is probably the most wicked feature of that little gem - external signal processor :) It gave us opportunity to play MS20's synth sounds by using microphone, guitar or any other electronic instrument* (I must admit it was not easy at all, you must play monophonic and also sound source must be very stabile, or you will get headache..) but also you had chance to use some other instrument sound through and to add filters/envelope/filter oscillators/etc to it and to change original sound in many many interesting ways. Finally, it was really nice video, well done!!!

      You're in luck, and guess what...the laws of physics and chemistry are on your side. They remake is an identical circuit. Electronics is not an art, its an science. Empirical. The new version HAS to sound the same, because all the components have the same electrical qualities and shape electron flow no differently than the original. So take it from an electronics engineer...your purchase is safe and sound. The only complaint you will get is from some poor sucker who spent thousands on an old one, two weeks before the cheaper remake was released.
      Cheers.

      @@anthonybrett Hell yeah, I always knew that all those people complaining about remakes sounding like garbage were full f shit. I'm so stoked, only one more day. Also, how do you get into electric engineering. Or really just designing synths? I already know how to weld which I know really has little to do with it and I'm starting to learn how to solder, but I want to really start to learn how electricity works and how all these parts interact with each other and all of that good stuff, I've finally, after years struggling to find what I want to do with myself found what I want to spend my life doing :)

    • @anthonybrett
      @anthonybrett 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinkinter8651 Hey Justin. I started electronics way back in 1988 (christ Im getting old lol). Back when I started mate stuff was still repaired at component level (nowadays you just replace cards). I started with an apprenticeship as a Radio Mechanic (4 years tech college) then a few years later I done a degree in Electronic Engineering. I'm not sure where you are (I'm in Australia) but getting an apprenticeship in electronics is probably pretty hard these days. Here in Aus, there are two separate subjects, Electrical Engineering is more for high power stuff, and Electronic Engineering for small scale. Its amazing just how much you can learn online though. Audio is a great place to start because Audio electronics isn't overly complex (Say compared to Radio receivers/transmitters). Learn your basics, Ohms Law, Voltage Dividers etc in resistive DC circuits. Just understanding how Current, Voltage and Resistance all relate to each other gives you a huge leg up with Audio. Then get into AC, reactance stuff (capacitive/inductive). Once you get that down, THEN move onto transistors and later Op Amps etc. Keep practicing your soldering, and build as many DIY kits as you can. Try ModularAddict.com, they sell lots of great kits. Nothing teaches you more than building the stuff and experimenting.
      Try this site, it was run by the great Ray Wilson (passed a few years back from cancer fuck it) www.musicfromouterspace.com or syntherjack.net/how-to-start-synth-diy/ . I swear if I had the Web back when I started I would have never left the fuckin house lol. Take it easy and good luck mate. Hope that MS20s going ok, I love mine.

    • @anthonybrett
      @anthonybrett 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry dude forgot to say...use this vcvrack.com/ if you arent already.
      It can teach you shitloads!! about how to experiment with "virtual" modules (objects) hook them up and screw around, another great way to learn electronics in audio and its output is really no worse than any eurorack analog. I use it for external control (envelopes, triggers etc) in my setup all the time.
      Cheers

      Brett Anthony Thanks so much man! I suppose Im pretty lucky to be living in the Information Age haha. I will definitely check out those sites. I actually got super lucky recently and procured a Make Noise Black and Gold Shared System Plus from Guitar Center for only like a couple grand, I dont think the people there quite knew what it was haha. Ive been looking for a cheap way to score some new modules though and DIY seemed like the best route so those sites will definitely help me kill two birds with one stone. The MS-20 is better than I even thought it would be :) Love your profile pic btw, used to have the Criterion Collection Collectors version of that movie when I was in high school, spent years looking for it, but my mom despised it and she threw it away when I moved out, I forgot to bring it with me :( Anyway, thanks for the info once again man, hopefully when I finally get all my ambitions on track I can finally fulfill my dream of traveling to Australia and hire an airplane to write a vapor trail thank you in the sky for ya ;) lol

    KORG DS-10 is a music creation program for the Nintendo DS that emulates the Korg MS range of synthesizers. Frequently people refer to the Korg MS-10 but this is a single oscillator monosynth. The DS-10 adds sync which the MS-20 is lacking.

    Ms - 10 was my 1st synth. The thunder and wind sounds you can make with nothing but pink and white noise (and some filtering)are awesome itself . It could create all the Italo base sounds of the time . I hooked it up to a 3 head reeltape recorder that functioned as a tape echo ( 3 speeds...lol) I sold it and bought myself a Korg MonoPoly witch is one of the fatest sounding synth's you will ever hear ! Would love to see you play that syhnt Doctor Mix !

    I'm in love with this synth! I never tried the minimoog, but without that i do prefer the ms 20, the sounds and possibilities are incredible. Very good videos! Love from France!

    I loved so much the Korg MS-20. The first time I heard it, was with the duo Air, before with Röyksopp. And I felt MS-20 has many possibilities of sound and also being versatile with many styles of music!!!
    But i got impressed with its polyphony!
    Thank you, Doctor Mix!!!

    Back in the mid to early 2000's I ALMOST owned had one of those and I blame my job for taking it away from me. There was one in an eBay auction that no one really bid on that I managed to get that winning bid on and it stayed that way for days. I babysat that auction. But the auction was scheduled to end at exactly the time that I had to leave for work, so I couldn't babysit the very end of the auction. And I left for work. I drove to work, got there, checked ebay with my text-only flip cell phone, and of course, within the 15 minutes that it took me to get to work, some idiot had beat me for the auction for $1. I was LIVID!!!!!
