My Chippie responds to his name even from another room and when called by other of my family memebers. We keep consistent in calling him (with treats in the beginning) everyday. Now even without treats he comes as well. When we haven't had the treat ready, he just seats there and waits. If it takes longer, he would nudge our feet like asking: 'excuse me, you called me here!' He also responds to other words like 'come here' and 'no'. So, keep trying! Buns understand you!

My rabbits know their names! When I call the name of one of them that is the one that comes to me and then I call the other one and that one comes. They are of course not as responsive as dogs, and will only come when they feel safe. I just practised it by calling their name and giving them a treat when they were young.

Oh yes our bunny definitely knew his name but he never responds.
The only reason I know he knows, is because one time I gave him a blueberry and he was smitten with me for an hour.
He would come when called and would do zoomies in my room.
And yes he comes when he hears his name specifically since any other word doesn’t work.
He went back to normal after an hour when I didn’t give him more blueberries. (He has a really weak stomach so if he gets too many veggies it… won’t end well. Especially since he’s a white bunny)

I just learned about Pavlov’s theory in my phycology class. This is called classical condition. Bunnies are very very smart. Cinnabun will definitely learn to come when her name is called in no time 👍🏾 behavior is learned over time so she just needs a little more time :))

Actually, I have read that rabbits actually become more amenable to learning tricks and stuff as they get older, contrary to dogs. That's sorta been my experience too. None of my 3 rabbits have been super obedient or cuddly at young ages. My oldest one who would be 12 if he was still with us, he started to become a lot more cuddly and obedient around 4-5. I think the explanation was that young rabbits tend to be very ADHD and are impatient and not eager to learn. When they reach middle age they tend to chill out and become a bit more agreeable.

Oh, great! thanks! You have fully confirmed my assumptions. I thought it was because minilopes are often a little deaf.
My rabbits respond perfectly to gestures. For example, they are well trained to run up when I slap my shin with my palm or make a beckoning movement with my hand. But they completely ignore and do not differentiate voice commands. I also assumed that this was due to the fact that they communicate with each other only with body language.
When i call a rabbit in the same room with him, it seems that he is running to a voice command. But experiments with another room show that the voice command does not work.

Took me about 2 months for my baby to respond to her name. I firstly got her to respond to me tapping on the floor and then calling her name. I later started clicker training and calling her name. She evetually started to catch on her name because I always rewarded her with a treat whenever she came to me. I also did it at different distances and stuff too. Its so rewarding when you reach a point where they able to respond just by calling their name :D

I kinda started doing the same with Maisy. If I say, Maisy nummies, she will come running. Now, Maisy is also only 7 months old, so she's still a baby which might be working in my favor. Either way my bun is crazy smart so only time will tell if she truly knows her name but we're having fun and bonding more and more each day so that in itself makes me a very happy bun mom. Sending love and pets to Cinnabun. ❤

So I bred show and pet rabbits for almost 16 years and kept over 24 of them for myself as pets. Needless to say I had a very large pool of bunnies to learn from and test for intelligence. Out of the 24, 16 of them definitely knew their names. In fact, I could call them one by one even from around a corner and I never had treats (tho I think treats are a cool way to train them). Rabbits actually do communicate through sounds to each other, but as humans, we often can't hear the noises (kinda like high chirps of a bat), but other bunnies can hear them. When I was under the age of 17, I could hear all their noises. It may be because I had so many, and most all of them got along and interacted with each other that mine were more vocal, but they were very vocal, just you'd need a microphone to hear it. Haha. Rabbits also purr with their teeth chattering when they are happy. As for Rabbits training like a dog, out of my 24 Rabbits 18 of them were average rabbit intelligence, 2 were beyond unsmart (to put it kindly) and 4 of them were smarter than my current working breed ranch dogs! The smartest were 2 mini lops and 2 lionheads. My lion head Thorton was able to run agility courses jumping up to 3 feet, though he be but 6 inches himself. He loved it! I competed and won competitions with him. 40 jumps in 40 seconds. I also did agility with my dog and honestly I went to more competitions with the rabbit (at rabbit agility shows) than my dog because the rabbit was obsessed over agility as where my dog just did it when I told her too. If I left the obstacles outside unattended, he would run himself through the course (and in order) without anyone leading him. In fact, if he knocked a jump down, he would attempt to put the pole back up (he never could manage to get it back up, but he tried). He won many ribbons and never got distracted at noisy crowded shows. He was my favorite lion head. My favorite mini lop was very intelligent, and knew many tricks, including turning my books page, when I verbally told him I was done with the page. I had that mini lop for all 16 years I had the Rabbits. He lived really long. Perhaps because I was a child, when I got him and expected him to be smart, it made him that way. Whoo knows. But he stayed that smart even once i was an adult, so it stuck. I would walk him daily without a leash, he would come, heel, and lay down when I talked to neighbors. He was awesome!!! All this to say, I loved all my bunnies, but some had intelligence far beyond others. Also, I found all my male rabbits were more outgoing like a dog where the females wanted to stay home with the exception of one female who would like to go with me to children's classrooms. She just loved being pet. Your bunny is so cute! I think she is smart enough to learn her name. However, I did find (kinda like puppies) if they aren't taught their name when babies it is much harder to retrain them as adults. It's clear Cinnabun, and you already have a great connection and since you have an established way of communicating, she doesn't see a need to learn a new way. I trained one rabbit to all hand gestures because he was deaf and another to voice because he was blind, and so one. Rabbits are very adaptable and social. I really enjoyed your video! Oh, and when my mini lop got old he had a stroke and lost movement in his back legs. The vet said he had no pain and just would need extra care. So I built him a wheel chair and he learned to walk around instead of hop. He would do burnouts with the wheelchair and it was so fun to see how happy he was. I was able to do that because when he wasn't in his chair and was in his cage his adult son rabbit would take care of him. (Dispite what some books say, male rabbits can get along). His son would push the water to him, bring him hat hourly and clean him and help him get around. It was turly amazing because when this son was born the mother rabbits rejected him and my dog and the father rabbit raised him. The return of camapassion and love was something nature documentaries would never show you. It was so neat. 😊 I wrote this really long message to encourage you if you want to keep trying to teach her her name.

Amazing analysis! Our buns do respond to our calling their names, but I am not convinced that they know their names. They appear to respond to situational queues, like they know that they need to get into their carrier before being fed in the evening to transport them from our garden

Good experiment! I think it's possible yes, but also may depend on the rabbit. I have 2 bonded house buns, Banksy and Buttercup. I used the same approach with both of them, but with elevated pitch/ faster pace in my voice, followed by a kissy sound. Did this with both buns about 3 years ago to train.... But only Buttercup learned her name and comes when called. Banksy couldn't be bothered, lol! I still keep trying though... 😅

My buns know their names, they just don't respect me enough to come running 😅
I know they know words and phrases... I always say "who wants ______" depending on what food I'm giving them. So now they get all excited if I say "snacks" "banana" "carrots" "lettuce" "pellets" "apple chips" ...that kind of thing. They're a little skiddish with being touched, so I always say "can I pat you" or "who wants pats" and they'll usually bow their head so I can rub their noses. They definitely know their names because they'll look at me when I call them, but they just don't care unless it's followed by food

Yeah, my boy Jin is 2, he doesn't know his name. But my girl Momo who was 4 when she passed knew her name. But Jin does respond to body language, if I sit on the floor with one leg folded up he knows that pose is treat pose. If I lie on my back on the floor he runs up to me to give my head and hair a grooming. It's very cute.

Absolutely you can. :) I taught my guys and the fosters I've had in the past to respond to their names. It was always paired with treats at first, but after a couple of weeks as part of their routine, then I'd start calling them (and treating) randomly through the day before removing the treats but giving them a pat. I also clicker trained them by snapping my fingers in case anyone else (Friend or house sitter) needed to call or find them quickly.

it could also be a consideration that your pumpkinpie doesnt respond to audio because of the floppy ears, which are bred that way and actually painful to have. All my Rabbits knew their names and it didn't take long or had to give them treats. Maybe Cinnabun is way too long and she doesn't like it. I hope your NOT using this as a training video because it's wrong!

I got my bunny when he was 1 year old. His previous name was Oreo but we have a cat name Oreo lol so I changed it to Charlie and I always talk to him and calling him Charlie and he listens and looks at me when I call him. He also comes to me when I say his name as well. I am very lucky to have a very smart bunny ❤

I always figure he knows it, he's just not feelin' it. 😂 Like, he probably figures something is coming up that he's not too excited about. 🫣😶‍🌫️
This was helpful though. I never would've tied together being a prey animal, focused on nonverbals as a reason for not recognizing verbal cues.
