East of Eden | One of Bar Harbor's Last Gilded Age Mansions

SOLD! Statuesque and elegant, East of Eden is one of the few remaining turn of the century 'Gilded Age' mansions to survive the devastating wild fire of 1947. This totally renovated and updated 15,000 sq. ft. residence was designed by prestigious architect Guy Lowell, and built in 1907 in the Beaux Arts style, with Mediterranean Italian overtones. Architectural details abound throughout, with Ionic columns framing patterned marble, Douglas fir or oak parquet floors, arched ceilings, orate niches and intricate fireplaces throughout the formal living, dining and game rooms. Great attention to detail has been given in preserving the many architectural details, including an original pastel mural depicting the nearby lush scenery. This primary floor was designed for entertaining on both a lavish or intimate scale, with a huge expansive brick deck and covered porch overlooking the many islands of scenic Frenchman Bay.
There are seven primary en suite bedrooms, all with fireplaces, and attractive water or scenic views. The central wide hall and landing are decorated in a hand painted Chinese wallpaper, depicting a serene woodland setting of butterflies and birds in a colorful garden.
The third floor offers eleven smaller bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large, walk-in linen closet, and several storage rooms. A two-person passenger elevator services all three residential floors, as well as the basement.
A neighboring parcel known as Buonriposo, was recently added, bringing the total acreage to 9 acres, and waterfront to 1,100’. The scenic lawns and water elements also overlook Frenchman Bay, with its many conserved glacial islands and mountains. A decorative fountain and natural pond present calming, peaceful, intimate sitting areas on the grounds that enhance the overall setting.
While East of Eden has been fully modernized, its' architectural heritage was carefully preserved. Additional amenities at this prestigious estate include an eight car garage, maintenance building, deep water dock and full property generator. SO BEAUTIFUL! Can’t believe it sold for only >$5M!! What a steal! Hope they tear down those horrible garages...what an eyesore right in front of the house...why was that necessary since there’s plenty of room on that beautiful property!

They didnt pay any taxes. Hard to imagine. They could spend as much as they possibly could. This is a less extravagant mansions as opposed to the marble house and hearst mansions. Wow.

Love it. Reminds me of some movie I saw a couple of weeks ago based on a book. It's truly beautiful overlooking the water. The home is so grand on it's own by the water. If it was my home I might have it fenced without having it obstructing anything.

Such a shame that the local government property taxes make this a rather unattractive purchase. Americans need to reign in their local governments' out of control taxation.

I would remove the blacktop and replace it with stone or some kind of Brick driveway. Probably change the Garage looks little better. Other then that everything is beautiful.
Something Is missing in the exterior of the house from the back the entrance to the front is horrible looking those garages before you get to the house are hideous not my favorite the house inside amazing

This house belonged to Bill Ruger Jr. of Newport NH who had an incredible collection of automobiles. Probably for a few cars of his collection that he liked to drive around the Island.

Putting the garage on the sea side of the house would totally spoil the views. As this house once belonged to a car collector it makes sense to put the garage on the street access side of the house.

This looks very comfortable to me. You’d obviously have to have a fleet of staff running after you, that makes things easier.

It looks like a 70’s addition. Takes away from the grandeur as you approach the house. It was probably covered by trees at one point and the owners and guests were never meant to see it. Only the chauffeur when putting the car away, maybe? I just don’t know who in their right mind would put that next to this beautiful house.

What landscaping?! As a landscape architect, I'm astounded to not see even one shrub or tree!!! Foundation plantings and adjacent gardens could have made a beautiful exterior statement. Sadly missing here.

House and view are beautiful but curb appeal is non-existent and boring. Such a shame ... takes away from the overall appeal of the house. Agree about garage ... ugly building that completely detracts from everything else.

It's in Bar Harbor and across from Acadia National Park, one of the most stunning and wealthy areas of the country, it's SPECTACULAR!
It looks too new. Bad remodel. And there's absolutely no landscaping. No charm.
