After “not making the grade” with big Brooke Shields/Cindy Crawford brows of the 80’s…I over plucked during the (first) Pam Anderson trend. Don’t do it! My advice is to Embrace your own brows…keep them neat, pluck wayward hairs, but don’t follow these dumb trends. They come, they go…it will just make you crazy trying to keep up. And…you may be “stuck” with an old trend (sparse brows due to over plucking OR tattooing on thick brows)

So true. Luckily I resisted the urge to pluck to the pencil thin brow throughout my lifetime and I’m happy I did. One thing about plucking you do you want to pluck the crazy ones that grow under or between your eyebrows but leave the ones on top alone. Plucking the top just seems to cause more problems than it solves. Just use a eyebrow brush to tame them and get them back in line with the rest of your brow. Although I must say as I approach 60 this year I have noticed a natural lessening of my eyebrows. I’m just taking that as a natural part of aging and using a little makeup to fill in between the hairs and moving on.

I've always had bushy brows, and growing up in the late 90's/early 2000's, I HATED them. I wanted to get them waxed so bad but my mom would never take me because she over-tweezed her brows in her youth to the point where they never grew back. 20 years later I'm so grateful she made me leave my brows alone lol.

I barely had any eyebrow hair to begin with because of simple genetics, but yeah I fell into the same trend in the 90s. Finally was a coworker who pulled me aside saying she'd kill to have eyebrows like my natural ones and I needed to stop overplucking. Even if she was making it up, it meant a lot when I was young. Now I let them be and I'm happy with it.

I am 74 years old so have seen all the trends come and go. I always shaved the stray hairs under my natural brow but never the whole brow. No matter what the "style" was, I just kept my natural shape. I have very light hair naturally so I have always had to add color to the brows. I use mens beard dye to color my brows on a regular basis-being very careful not to get it in my eyes of course. I did finally get laser treatment for the stray hairs under my brow and they have never grown back. But as I have gotten older, my brow hairs have gotten sparce (and of course those hairs are now growing on my chin!)

I wish that I had not plucked so much between the brows though since those hairs never grow back and my brows don't frame my eyes enough now.

Screw that. I personally like thicker eyebrows a lot. I feel this was something people had to learn, rather than it being a trend thing...
I think Cara Delevingne in particular made people realise that thicker eyebrows are not something to avoid.

As a tween/teen of the 90’s I can attest that too many of my friends regret the plucking they did to their brows. Some have virtually no brows and did not have successful micro blading experiences, one got full-on tattoo brows and I have serious concerns for her as her face has began to age and change shape. Now, my most memorable experience with brows is a former coworker who absolutely hates any length to her brows. She didn’t want them to lay down at all, so she uses little scissors, like the type that come in a nail kit, and cuts them down to basically stubble. I’ve never seen anything more distracting in my life. Once I noticed she did this I could never look at anything else when she spoke. I haven’t worked that job for many years but I’ve never forgotten her, or her brows.

I discovered how important eyebrows and eyelashes are when I lost *all* of my hair from chemotherapy 18 years ago. The hair on my head grew back in tiny little curls for about a year and then reverted back to its original texture. It did not grow back on my arms and legs 😀, and my brows and lashes have never been the same 😥. I looked into transplants ($$$) and tattooing--too many bad looking results there. The most helpful technique I discovered was from a professional makeup artist on TH-cam who uses "Just For Men Beard and Mustache" on her own brows once a week. Then I just finish shaping with a brow pencil every day. Kind of a pain, but works for me!

Not me being disorganized... 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 Brow+lashes dye is formulated specifically for them and it normally doesn' t cause any problems but at the end of the day it is what is is: the little brother of the head one. After continued use for a long time some people can become hypersensitive or it can end weakening the follicle. Since you have a post-chemo hair type, please, be extreamly careful, pay attention to the most subtle change and try to use it with the lower frequency possible. And in this case, quality and price matters. I can advice you the best lip product under 5$ and it beats all the expensive ones but cheap dye is a nono. If you can buy it on a store for professional hairdressers and MUAs and ask for advice, well invested money. Sending tones of health 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤🖤🖤

Thank you for this important message. It is so important to be aware of what suits our individual faces and that in my opinion is what nature gave us, or something close, with some tidying up and subtle enhancement. I am over 50 now and remember ridiculously thin eyebrows going in and out of fashion every decade or so. The worst was in the 90's when many young women had nothing but a skinny pencil line drawn on where their eyebrows used to be. I did not follow that trend and I was disappointed that the natural look of the early 90's had such a short lifespan. However when I look back at pictures of me when thin eyebrows were in again in the early 2000's, I do think mine were overplucked. They just didn't seem over-plucked to me at the time because other women where over-plucking their eyebrows a lot more. Fortunately I have the genetics to grow those eyebrows back, and I didn't have to do anything with them when bushy eyebrows were in. The artificial ones can be way too extreme on faces that don't suit them.

  • @Sweetbrightness

I think I over plucked because of the characters Meg Ryan played. I’m 53 and still have thin brows, and not by choice. I had what was called (is it still?) a unibrow. I loved Brooke Shields, not only for her beauty but her intelligence. She had (still has?) moral character, she was ethical and a great role model when I was young. However, I had the added pressure of not being the girl my mom wanted. No tears or emotion - it was what it was I didn’t know any different - I’ve had plenty of therapy & done a LOT of shadow work to get through those issues. My mom pushed me to pluck. To her I looked like a bigfoot throwback (laugh out loud now 😊). Between that and the space between my teeth and my robust figure, I was never a typical cheerleader. I am the life of the party, however!
Beware to human beings, pick your priorities wisely. Take care of your teeth, take care of your heart, physically and emotionally. Give more than you receive. Live and live well. I promise, no one will notice your brows!

I’m in my late 50s and when I was a teenager getting Into makeup and such, my mother taught me to tweeze my brows to a thin line. Of course I overtweezed. I kept this practice up until a few years ago. I pretty much have no brows now. I now use a brow powder to add that feature back to my appearance. I was going to look into brow micro blading until I realized that it was like getting a tattoo. When I as at my allergist’s office, we got to talking about brows. She found a brow serum that she was using and said it worked. Of course, it was a bit pricy. After researchIng brow serums I purchased one (Nourish Brow). It is working. The fronts of the brows are coming in thick and coarse. But the ends are not getting any better. I will continue using the serum but I still need to fill them in with brow powder. If I could go back in time, I would definitely NOT overpluck. Love your channel, Andrea! Thank you for putting out all these videos.

I'm not over 50 but until well in my 20s maybe even 30 (I think) thin brows were the thing and everyone was plucking them, if you didn't do it, it was considered "dirty", unhygienic, as if you were walking around with all your body hair intact (e.g. armpits and legs). I also plucked my brows but only minimally, so people always told me "since you don't pluck your brows..." or told me I should pluck them (... WTF!!) as they were "too thick" and not in style ("too thick" then, not later/now!!). At that time, it was in fashion to have very very thin brows, like a line. Thankfully I didn't overpluck them as brows never grow back!! I also learned from my mom not to do it too much, as she was struggling with very sparse brows from overplucking all her life. I have neither Lily Collins' brows or very thin brows, but I'm definitely not going to pluck my brows any more and wouldn't advise anyone to do it!

This video just unofficially confirms my suspicion that all the hairs you want to be strong and grow back readily are the ones that are the weakest and most susceptible to permanent damage while all the hairs you wish would disappear forever are the strongest and most persistent. >:(
I'm not thrilled to hear that thin brows are coming back but I think the number of people that go with the thin trend will be a lot lower than before, while a lot of people will stick with thicker brows permanently. I think the re-acceptance of thicker brows that occurred a decade ago is here to stay.

Hi at 50 my brows are still fairly decent, but that's because my mum overplucked hers in the sixties and was a cautionary tale re that - so many years she has spent drawing them on, as she had so few hairs left growing naturally. In the nineties, when thin brows were once again a huge trend I was in my late teens and twenties. I just didn't do the trendy thing, as I knew that these "looks" come and go. I have had them tidied up to suit my natural brow shape consistently throughout my adult life. Waxing, plucking and threading those stray hairs for years, but haven't had them stop growing as such. Menopause and aging thinned them out a little, but not enough to be a big issue. The white hairs though lol I do use brow gel to disguise and occasionally tint them too. Having a neat and tidy brow that flatters your own eye shape and face shape, is the best look on anyone in my opinion - that way it just always looks good on you and will withstand the trends that come and go. Best wishes.

At 82 I have great thick gray hair and spend a lot of time creating natural looking eyebrows. Looking back at photos from my 20s and 30s, I had lovely dark eyebrows with a nice arch. Early 70s the glamour mags were touting the "Joan Crawford eyebrow look". That translates tweezing brows very thin. I did that and my brows were never the same. I noticed the faces you had in your opening were celebrities. I think we all know by now not to follow the fashion--their fashion for sure!
Embrace who you are! Another great video. Thank you!

I started plucking my eyebrows in my late teens (I'm 39 now) and sure enough I ended up with overplucked eyebrows. However, I stopped plucking them many years ago but the hair loss continued to get worse. I don't have any underlying diseases, as far as I know, so I think my eyebrow area is just very sensitive to trauma. To make matters worse, I have a scar that runs along my left eyebrow.
I fill them in every morning with an eyebrow gel and I quite like the end result, but it is definitely a bit troublesome to do that every single day. I've considered microblading, but since I use tretinoin I would probably end up with orange eyebrows.
Personally, nowadays I prefer thicker eyebrows. They frame the face quite nicely and help create a more youthful look. I think I'll leave the thin brows trend to Gen Z, same as I did with other horrible 90's trends.

Eyebrows are always changing. Subtle scarring can occur. Thin brows trends in 1970s (look up Jaclyn Smith), 1990s. I think women may have over-plucked in /50s by widening the area between. Might look up Judy (she had fab brows in her early 20s) and check out Liz Taylor's.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s when thin eyebrows where the thing. I was one who over plucked to the point my eyebrows didn't grow back. I literally just had my eyebrows microbladed less than a week ago and I'm very happy with them. I'm SHOCKED that thin eyebrows are making a come back! All I can say is don't fall into this temporary fad. You'll regret it as I did.

I dont care what is "IN". I want to look nice. I have naturally thick brows. When I was a little kid I was made fun of mercilessly. Everyone's thin with age naturally. Mine have thinned a bit over the years, but are still very thick. I only remove a few strays that fall outside the natural shape. That's it.

Yeay!!! I over plucked in the 70's/80's! Now they are also thinning! I haven't used a tweezer in I probably 25 years. I also remember reading in a 'fashion' magazine that one should NEVER pluck the hairs on top of the brows. I think they said it would cause infection. I never understood that. I did it and never got an infection. I use a pencil every day whether I am leaving the house or not! I don't mind the shape they are now, but wish they were more filled in.... As you mentioned, the chin hairs are happy and healthy. Those suckers are growing just fine!!

While I have your attention, please tell us about stri-vectin products. Do they work? I don’t think they do. Spent a ton of money on them. Was hoping the neck cream might do something, but no. Also, having a thyroid issue where the outer third is a bit thinner helps a great deal. You mentioned tweezing and even shaving. What is your take on waxing the brows? Thank you for topic today.

I am just curious. Say you pluck your brows and cause trauma. Will this traumatise only the follicles you have plucked out of, or does this also damage nearby follicles? As in, will this spread somehow?
I've never OVER plucked, but I have always plucked (since I was about 13 and I am 33 now). They grow back always, and they grow back FAST.
I hold the skin as a I pluck to minimise the pain. This may minimise the trauma too, but i do not know.

Hello Dr. Dray, would you please consider making a video about the new Not So Pretty docuseries on HBO Max? There are currently 4 episodes on there each talking about a different aspect of the beauty industry (makeup, nails, skin, and hair) exposing the dangers of some of the ingredients in these products. I would like to hear your thoughts about the series as it mentions lots of things that I’ve heard from other experts including yourself to not be a true concern, eg parabens. It also heavily advertises the EWG database and other similar databases for the consumer to find “safer” products. Thank you in advance!

I was born in 1964. I'll be 58 in May. Over the past 100 years thick eyebrows have only been stylish for brief periods of time, three brief periods, I think. I don't think bushy brows were ever in style in the modern world until the late 60s and early 70s, during the Hippie era. By the time Disco dominated the sound waves, and the dancefloor, thin was in. in 1980, Brook Shields made a daring move by sporting thick brows in her famous Calvin Klein commercial, "Reading is to the mind like Calvins are to the body." Remember that, Boomers? lol. And, even though we loved Brook Shields and blue lagoons, we hated thick brows. Until Madonna, that is....but even Madonna ages, so by the time the 90s hit, thin was back in, and it stayed in for the next 20 years. The most recent rise in thick-brow popularity is probably related to the full-browed twenty-somethings who brought social media out of obscurity and into the mainstream. But youth is ephemeral.....and just like that, thin is in again.

Thank you for your wonderful sense of humor when educating us. I have never had thick brows and only tweezed underneath. The first time I saw tattoos brows on a good friend, all I could see when talking to her was the tattooed brows. So distracting. I am in my sixties coming up to the next decade in a couple years. In my early years after seeing a friends mom’s brows freshly completely shaved off, her skin was bright red and slathered with ointment. It impacted me so badly, I have never followed the brow trends. Natural no matter full brows or thin brows, they are ones best look.I’m accepting on every hair I have and don’t.

I' m a MUA and my two trichotillomaniac customers who finally did itwhere able to end dealing with tricho because, as superficial as it may sound, they both told me: "Every time I surprise my fingers touching my brow, the Pavlov' s Dog effect remembers me how much money I spent and this has been the only thing wich has stopped me". Hope their testimony may help you. If you need any brow advice, here I am 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Born in the 80s and really messed my brows up. I got Rapid Brow from Target and surprisingly, it works really well. I used that until I ran out and bought the 5% generic minoxidil because it’s much cheaper. Both work but they do take time. I also use Just for Men to dye my brows brown because my brows are more blonde. I spent tons on micro-blading, only for it to fade within 2 years. There is no visible evidence that painful experience ever happened.

My Dad’s favorite slogan was “all things in moderation.” I must say, I took that as gospel, and it has served me well all my life. I have always had the issue of light, sparse brows, to go along with my fine, blonde hair. I have never plucked; I have always used brow pencils. I am a blank slate. I did get conservative tattooing, which serves as a template for the brow penciling. I think micro blading probably causes scarring, which could lead to some adverse outcomes down the road, especially when it is repeated.
