I have all three of these and the one I pick up most often is... the tti but not because the blade steel. It all because the feel in hand the scale feels the best in hand for me.
I've been thinking about retiring my Leatherman and getting a new one. Mine is at least 37 years old and is used almost every day. I can't imagine not having one on my hip. Anyway I appreciate the reviews. When I bought mine there was 1, not multiple options, so this is a big help.
@@TheIrcbully I got mine in 1983, which looking through the company history was apparently their first year of production - so from what I can tell I was in on the first 500. There was only one model back then. My saw broke about 2 years ago, and I broke my awl a couple weeks ago, but that's after a ton of use.
I bought the Side Kick, plus the Micro in a blister pack about 10 years ago at Home Depot for $24.99. I snagged 4, one for me and three for presents along the way. Best deal of my prepping life.
My Leatherman Wave is at least 20 years old and is part of my EDC for that time. I've worn out 2 leather belt sheaths, one a hand tooled leather sheath a friend made for me, and the other the original leather Leatherman sheath that came with it. The tool has been back to the factory twice and refurbished. I don't recall why I sent it back the first time, but the second time was because I broke the scissors by trying to cut some card stock. Leatherman scissors are not the same as Victorinox SWAK scissors. During the time my Leatherman was at the factory, I carried a cheap knockoff that didn't have the outside blades like the Wave. Man, that sucked. You get used to pulling it out and opening the blade with your thumb and when you can't, well... I do know in some countries where knife carry is frowned upon, folks are able to get by with a Leatherman with outside blades without causing raised eyebrows. Not my first choice for self defense, but you gotta make due with what you can.
Hey amigo! Check out the Skinth Shield or other Skinth holsters .. I'm not affiliated, but as someone who wore through the included leather sheath in under a year, and has had the SAME Skinth pouch for a solid 8 years (it still looks next to new as well), they're a super solid investment. I got mine with a belt loop as I don't like the clips, but check em out
Thanks! hope you enjoy it. If you feel its a bit stiff dont mess with the screws just open and close it several times, use it a bit unitl it settles on its own.
for the price the wave plus is the best , i got a black one for 70 bucks ! half the price of the other two . 420 hc is a good steel , s30v is a good steel but it will break before the 420hc will . also it's easiler to sharpen . im not lazy so i don't mind a couple of pulls on the sharpener!
Hi Fer! That new Charge AL + it works good? some people have disgust about aluminium handle against steel handle of Wave, what do you think about this model of Charge?
Nice video! I've had a Charge for something around 15 years. I dropped it once while fixing a snowmobile and it spent an entire winter under the snow until I found it again in the spring. It was surprisingly unphased over that. Not sure which sub model mine is, it has a 154cm blade on it. Question tho, do you have to close your Charge from pliers mode in a slightly special way? Mine will jam up if you just try to casually close it. I have to use a special closing technique to get the pliers head to tuck in.
There is a reason for this folding problem. On the charge their is a small tab of metal on each of the handles. It is designed to keep the plier head in place so that the tool closes symmetrically. With reasonable wear and tear, first one tab breaks off and then the other. You can still close it, of course, but you have to close one side and then the other. This is why the old models of the Charge, I suspect, has been retired.
Surge is a heavy duty tool. If you dont need strong pliers and an awl and the option to have bigger saw blades and a pair of big scissors then you want the Wave or Charge. Otherwise stick with the Surge. I cant imagine having smaller pliers.
Thanks so much! As a full-time RVer and camp host I always need a small tool on hand! Campers, other RVers, at the maintenance shop, someone is always asking for a tool and this is a great option rather than running back and forth to get one specific tool (some of the campgrounds are spread apart)! Is there a specific kind of oil you use to keep them oiled? I am guessing WD-40 or mineral oil.
The Leatherman PST II was the best. They can't improve perfection and should bring it back. For a full size utility tool, the SOG was superior. They should have never given it up for stupid stuff like throwing hatchets.
While the pst has its charm i switched to the rebar and never looked back. No more floppy Phillips driver or having to hold it open with my index finger and only turning 180 degrees over and over again when trying to assemble a bunch of screws in a hurry

Although the opening of the tools is terrible, their opening shouldn’t depend only on your fingernails. On a small Victorinox I understand it but on a big one? C’moon!
They do open easily, and discretely. I never liked having to push the other tools back into the Leatherman. It is like they're dogs at a shelter, you try to get the one you want and they are all coming out "Pick me! Pick me!"

Just got my charge plus black and it its my first leatherman and it took me 10 minutes to fall in love with it, the quality is so good.
Yup, and as years go by you start wondering how you ever lived without it.
If you can't decide, just buy them all. That's what I did. Easy peasy.

On the surge, you can fit the saw inside behind the handle scale. And switch it with the file if needed.
My biggest gripe with the Charge/Wave is the lack of an awl and a chisel/package opener

Excellent. You helped me make my decision. I wanted to buy the tti, but I would never use the crimper on the pliers.
My favorite is still the old Leatherman Wave…love that thing.
Too bad they don’t offer it anymore.
To be fair - I have never used the Surge or the Charge TTI, I’ll use your link and pick one of them up when I get paid to support the channel etc.

I don't have to close mine in any unique way. Was yours always like that or is it possible you damaged it at some point?
I have one with that problem. It's a Leatherman Charge xti, with 154CM blade.
There is a reason for this folding problem. On the charge their is a small tab of metal on each of the handles. It is designed to keep the plier head in place so that the tool closes symmetrically. man if the surge had a bigger set of scissors, that'd be golden. and if it had a premium quality blade as well, oh boy..

wd40 is fine, ballistol is good too or simply mineral oil. Use mineral oil if the blade will be used to prepare food.
Best to me would be inexpensive, lightweight, not made with chinesium steel. Probably can only get two of the three
What about the swiss tool spirit mx? I
think that's the best quality and has the most number of functions
i got a Leatherman Curl. It has a much more durable clip compared to the Wave, and Charge. And it's a little smaller. IMHO
Someone needs to let this fella know you can removed the tucked in lanyard loop on any leatherman to install the clip instead

Surprisingly light and compact compared to many new multitools too
