    after 4 hours of intense cleaning we can see light through the radiator so satisfying :-)

    Never thought I see one getting cleaned. Excellent.

    Definitely looks much better now, my 1960s Emerson radio has a similar coating on half of the evaporator coil

    Full load current of 14.7 amps on a 15-amp circuit: that's pretty tight. But then, Frigidaire did something similar in the mid-1950's, like building a 1HP 115V unit that drew 18 amps and putting a 20-amp plug on it.

    Only time i saw a coil dirtier than that was on my old 5 ton trane air handler. 5 years with a broken electronic air cleaner and a golden retriever. Hair was over 1 inch thick

    That condenser coil reminds me of the ones that are on top of the old commercial "True" brand refrigerators and freezers. My old 56 Emerson has the black coating on the evaporator, I thought it was so that you couldn't see it through the large slats in the front cover but it seems like everything that was done back then had a very important purpose unlike today where they just build junk.

    I lived in the Persian Gulf emirates of the UAE where the summers are extremely hot. Over the years saw some good window A/C units, before the late 1970's the American makes dominated or were the only ones - Carrier, Hotpoint, FridgidAir, Rheem and a few others. Towards the late 70's Japanese makes began taking the market. Their units were good too and were - Sanyo, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, General, Hitachi.
    The upper Gulf countries got to export oil much earlier, Iran (1900), Iraq (1920's), and Kuwait (1950's) and so homes and offices there would have used the early American A/C units such as this 1952 Vornado.

    That dirty condenser makes me think it blew its charge out from extreme pressure. About to check out your other vids to see if you got this going or not

  • @lesto59

    I can't wait to see this baby up and running again. Have you been able to access the inside blower yet? I believe these Vornado units have two squirrel cage wheels with the motor in the center. I hope you find the leak and can seal it. Looking forward to the next video.

    She is a dirty birdy but a nice machine.Bear in mind that the water that builds up in the pan gets thrown up on the condenser by the fan ring and this makes the unit more efficient.

    • @TheAirConditionerGuy
      @TheAirConditionerGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wont when im done with it. Condensation rots the unit. Period. Window units are the only hvac units that do this. All mine run fine and they wont rust. I dont spend days on end restoring them so they can rot away. Drill a drain hole. Stupid design, its part of planned obsolescence.

    Are you going to recharge with 134 or 12? I can't imagine what it would cost to get enough 12 at this point to fill that thing again.

    • @TheAirConditionerGuy
      @TheAirConditionerGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leaks gotta be found first, but i feel that with something this special, 12 is the only way to go.

    Is it possible to put R-32 refrigerant in a
    R-22 AC ?

    • @TheAirConditionerGuy
      @TheAirConditionerGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Negative

    • @jrmcferren
      @jrmcferren 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely not! R32 is closer to R410a (and is actually a component of R410a). You still can't retrofit R32 into an R410a system (at least under US regulations) because of the flammability. There are a few substitutes for R22 that can be put in with a compressor oil change, vintage AC enthusiasts don't like it, but they do exist.

    • @Smokes-1000
      @Smokes-1000 ปีที่แล้ว

      For r22 you would want r422b or r458a as a substitute/ drop in that’s what I always use r458a is the closest for operating pressures and cooling capacity r422b is a little bit less cooling capacity but still works.

  • @TheGhettoLobster

    All I could say after watching a lot of your very interesting videos you have a very interesting collection but I would never want to have to pay your electric bill unfortunately nothing is energy efficient about these old relics

    • @TheAirConditionerGuy
      @TheAirConditionerGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Energy efficiency is a complete crock of shit. Its been proven countless times. I run 4 ac units all vintage, all summer and only ever hit 200 a handful of times. Electric heat is the real killer. These units watt consumptions are rated at the worst possible conditions. Cycle times are less, rooms get dehumidified much quicker.
