Better Than D.O.A.? Putting Z-Man MinnowZ To The Test

- In this video, I tested out the Z-Man MinnowZ for my first time ever to see if it is really better than one of my favorite fishing lures: the D.O.A. C.A.L.. Z-Man lures are one of the most often requested lures from people who comment on my videos. These are extremely durable baits that give off a great action in the water even with slower retrieves. It didn't take long for me to start getting some redfish, snook, and speckled trout for a Tampa Bay area inshore slam!

Made the switch from DOA to Zman a couple months back and haven’t thought twice about it. The rigging options they offer to go along with the great action and durability are a huge advantage. I use mustad grip pins for weighted hooks as twist locks are a pain to get them on. The Texas eye is also amazing, perfect for when you have floating grass or fishing near oysters. Another advantage to their material is the buoyancy, when fishing slow on the bottom or sight fishing the tails on the baits stand up and sway in the water looking very realistic, superior to traditional plastics in my opinion.
poke the front of the bait with your hook (where the twist lock goes) then put the twist lock in. It helps me anyway. I hope this helps someone 🤙 good luck 🤙
What color should I use in Tampa area, water isn’t the clearest but not too dirty.
@@frostizz2072 i know its 5months later and youve probably found a color or 2 that should be working for you... But obviously keeping in mind you wanna fish lighter colors white or chartreuse in clean water and then darker in dark water... So plain white on a red jighead is my go too in clean water, or ill switch it up to the sexy mullet or the golden boy and then ill stick too those 3 dont over complicate your colors... darker water ill fish something like the bad shad or green pumpkin. At the end of the day its more an intictive reaction from the fish rather than a reaction to the color. Had days where ive fished light and dark colors in both light and dark water and still caught fish on both, will however stick to the light in clean water rule. Anyway enough rambling, hope this helps you out a bit and that you land that 40incher🙌🏻

Z-man is hands down my favorite soft plastic, I’ve been using them for years. Extremely durable as compared to competitors. I like DOA but they just aren’t nearly as durable.
Two things:
1. Don’t use the trout trick hooks, they suck. Use the 3/0 Texas Eye Jig Headz. Big eye and great action
2. These lures don’t really twitch well, I always just slow roll them with no rod movement and man does it hammer fish.
Z man diezel minnowZ is where it's at. I use the minnowZ for the smaller size and diezel minnowZ when you need something bigger. Also have caught tons of fish on the paddlerZ and the paddlerZ are scented with pro cure if you like scented baits. If there aren't any puffers around I like to throw slayer paddle tails they have amazing action even when slow rolling or just on the fall.
I put Zman to the true test....school of blues came by....I caught 8 3-5 lb fish before they tore it a little....still used that for two more fish before they chomped it in half....it was the first time trying Zman. I went and got more after that trip!
I just don’t like how stuff DOA plastics are compared to Z-man, takes a bit more to get them going, slayer inc is pretty similar but softer plastic, bigger tail.
I love the z-man’s because they are super soft, durable, and stay on very well, a pain to use with screw lock heads, but they stay on there.
I feel you man. DOA CAL has a special place in my heart because I've been using them forever. Different strokes for different folks!
Got on a solid trout bite last winter. Clocked 98 trout before I tapped out. All of them on a Z-Man swimming trout trick. Purple and Chartreuse with a 1/8 oz. Z-Man trout eye jig head. And like you said they like a slower retrieve. Welcome to Z-Man, man!

Z man is 95% of the baits I own. I still use doa but for night fishing at the dock lights. I’ve caught over 30 fish on one z man before. The puffer fish will mess it up but man they’re durable and the action is awesome. For $5 a pack (usually) it lasts a long time.
Z-man products used to be my go to for bass in collegiate tournaments but fishing in a league ruined bass fishing for me and I guess I just forgot about z-man. Until 3 days ago, that is, when I bought some. Fell in love all over again

Dude, I love the channel but two things that I’d like to see you spend more time on is technique to get them to bite on different baits/lures and how you know what fish is on before you reel it in.

Owner Twist-lock don't work well with Zman. But I love using the Texas Eye jig head for weedless.
Try the Texas Eye Swimbait jig head from zman for a weedless presentation. It gets a Magdraft wiggle with those jig heads.

I am curious as to the reasoning behind your using lighter tackle. Typically I see medium heavy rods and 3000 reels for artificial and 4000 for larger live bait and big plugs. Is there a benefit? Thanks!

My buddy's talked me into trying these for shallow water grouper. I normally throw hard plastics. Going to give them a shot. These are like 8" long

Your light action San Croix rod you always use, I'm looking to try a similar setup. Is yours the 7ft medium-lite power, fast action? Or is it the lite power, mod action? Ive got 2 of the St Croix avids. A M-L and a M-H. Theres quite a difference but between them will bring inmost fish. Match M-H with a Penn Battle 3 and the M-L a Shimano 20 Stradic 4000. Really feel good in your hands.

Next time you focused on using artificial net those greenies just for chum and get those fish fired up and you can catch more fish quicker using those paddle tails sometimes than actually using the greenies while you chum
Oh trust me I thought about it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't giving the lure an unfair advantage by getting the fish fire up on live chum

Told you bro. Zman has better action and tougher material. I like the zman trout trick rootbeer or fried chicken even better. My go to paddle tail. Once you use them you won’t go back to doa
