As a French person, I can 100% confirm the pronunciation of "Nice" in this sketch. Neece job.
YOU PRANKSTERS
Are you sure? I thought it was named by the person who's sister's daughter moved there
But how do you pronounce the biscuits 🤔
Neece baguette
Sure Sha-lo-té
The thing about the Irish jersey is so true though. I had a friend who used to go to France every year and got quite annoyed at the French when he tried to speak to them asking if they spoke English (he was asking in French). They would feign not understanding him. So I told him to add "je suis Irlandais" at the start of the sentence, and everyone would speak back to him in English, not a bother 😁🤣
That's so funny 😂
I don't get the Irish joke. Could someone please explain?
@@mtilford , The French are notorious at not liking the English (well, it's mostly banter, nothing too bad), so when an English speaks to them, the French will make it hard for them (acting like they don't understand whether they speak English or French).
To a French ear all English speakers sound the same, so it doesn't matter if you're Irish, Scottish or from whatever nationality, the French will think you're English. Now, if you tell them your nationality, as long as it's not English, the French will welcome you with open arms.
As I said, it's mostly banter, we love the English, but we also love to hate them, so we make it that tiny bit harder for them. Don't worry, they pay us in kind :)
It works with Je suis Ecossais as well! Trust me!
@@kevinmcqueenie7420 Any nationaly, as long as it's not "Je suis Anglais"!!!
I think all of us who teach French will be showing this to our classes this week…. Now all set for the speaking exams. Fantastique.
Brilliant 😂
Ah, formidable.
Carrément!
Merveilleux!
On verra ;)
My mum always taught me to mention that I was Australian in the first sentence of any conversation in France. Apparently an Australian accent sounds a lot like a German accent in French.
Do the French prefer Australians? 👀
@@SamFAHntha
As a German, I can say this much: the German-French relationship is historically determined, let's say complicated. But a very interesting topic.
A Belgian who speaks French should perhaps also emphasize that he is not French himself in Germany. 😅😉
@@SamFAHnthayup many French are in Australia working holiday
@@Rot24.mu00q Ah yeah I remembered the last century right after I hit send 😅
@@SamFAHntha It's not even just about the last century.
This complicated relationship is older than the first unified German Empire ever founded (1871 - after a war against France 🙃).
My impression from history class was: The river called Rhine somehow doesn't have a positive influence on the minds of both peoples.
We need a "Learning Irish is Easy" one next (even though its not that easy)
Oh I'm sure Foil could make up some stu-.... I mean... help us with his definitely definitely helpful tips 😆😆😆
I'm all in on that one. I could use some help😂
That would probably end with some stab at that Irish people don't speak Irish, and that "Irish" is English with an Irish accent.
I mean we have a pretty good reason as to why English took over here @@SIC647
I think Hogg is pretty fluent, but Foil and Arms not.
00:44 Very accurate and there is a very interesting reason for this phenomenon. When the Norman conquest happened in 1066, the language of the courts became French until the Pleading in English Act in 1362 when English began to appear in court circles more, making way for English literature such as the Canterbury Tales to be created and celebrated in formal circles. French was very gradually phased out, however many French "posh" words stuck, so some people would still use the French vocabulary whilst others used the English Anglo-Saxon vocabulary, leading to the dual vocabulary we still see today. And as you say, the French way to say all these words is still seen as fancy, even to this day! My favourite example is pork (French porc) and swine (German Schwein).
And this is why, as a French, I'm learning German on a phone set up in English.
My prior knowledge of both French and English helps a lot to guess the meaning of a lot of words. Not all, but enough to be a fun exercise.
A third of English is french.
The disparity between the meat and the animal is due to peasants rearing the meat to sell for nobles to eat. Think Robin Hood. Anglo-Saxon vs Anglo-Norman.
@@DavidCruickshankYes, especially legal English.
The "Ehhh..Pff" was my favourite part 😂
I felt he nailed it too 😂
Hahaha, I wondered how long it would be for the original, German sketch to develop into a new series! Not long at all apparently 😂 The good thing is, it’s another great one lads!
They're not making the same mistake they did with the immigration ones, by leaving it for years and years before making more 😂
As an English speaking South African, I just initially greeted them in Zulu and they were happy to speak English back. It's not that they can't speak English, many of them just won't if they think you're English. So letting them know you're Irish is your best bet. (Giving you advice like you're actually going there when this is just a sketch!!) Very funny guys, as usual!
Thanks Bianca
So glad you did a French version of this! Love the hilarious images and hints of a wild backstory that all Foil’s misunderstandings conjure up!
Yeah he should've taken his experiences as a hint that maybe it's not the best idea 😂😂
Thanks for a great sketch and thanks for a wild night in Oxford! I witnessed Foil’s triumph, when the bread reached unprecedented heights and soared all the way to the far out balcony. Credit goes to Arms too, who recognized the superior flying properties of the heel of the bread. Legends!
Did Arms take credit for using the heel? Hahaha that little-... 😆

When I think back to how much French I used to know for school that I can’t remember now, it makes me want to weep 😅 It was lovely meeting you all at Salford on Sunday! See you at parkrun sometime?
I'm assuming they have to bath their fish that day....

The bit about using the fancy versions of the English words is my favorite, as it's the reason English has about twice as many words as other languages for a lot of things.
Just speak like a snob 😂 language learning with fah is back!
PS: thanks a mil to Anja, who got me a birthday card from Oxford from her and the lads, absolutely made my day ❤
Belated happy birthday Miriam!!! 🥳❤️

1:18 - Foil speaking international 🤣🤣
Absolutely love your learning language sketches, both German and French😂 Foil looks so convincing as a multi-language teacher!
I must share it with my students right now!😃
My high school french teacher (who didn't speak proper French - to be fair I grew near actual Parisian neighbours, so I'm biased. . . ) actually GAVE UP on our class for the listening/speaking portions of the lessons!
Alright, I'll admit I forgot the term 'to feed the cat' on an exam and I used the French I could, and got called to the teacher's desk and she asked me (trying her best not to laugh - I'll give her credit for even trying to laugh, she was always so serious. . . . ) 'Do you eat cats. . .? " I still got some credit for putting down 'pour mange le chat'!
To be fair, the teacher was known as one of the hardest teachers in our high school, but to give her credit, I was sick once and had liquid snot literally dripping from my nose all day long, and our french class had a speaking test that day, and I used the good 10 seconds I had of snot not dripping from my face to ask her if I could do the speaking portion of the test another time, and she looked upon me with pity and said yes. (Then cancelled for the entire class. . . I think she had actually given up hope on us.)
Side note: Also, she gave me a death glare because during a fire drill in the middle of an exam, I took my notes and textbook out with me so while standing in the school parking lot, I was technically, actively studying, in the middle of the exam, . . .
She didn't say I was cheating, and she let me go back to my test, so I suppose that's fair.
Why did I put so much work into French during my school years without even a hint of success, when it's obviously so easy...
All I can say is: Désolé, je ne parle pas vraiment bien français.
But I like this (so far short) series.
Which language is next? Spanish, Italian, Russian, Irish?
Every Thursday morning I open TH-cam knowing that there is a hilarious sketch for me to enjoy

@@daftirishmarej1827 nothing to guess, the pronunciation rules are set out quite clearly in Latin. They have to pick a period though, because Latin as spoken by Romans differs from medieval Latin spoken throughout Europe
@@MairiAngwen The Romans spoke Greek, not Latin, if I remember correctly 🤔unless we're thinking of different times.
Either way, bring it on FAH!!!

Upper class Romans in the Republican period spoke Greek. Similar to how Russian nobles in the imperial era mostly spoke French. Your average non-patrician Roman spoke Latin.

Also, this reminds me of the time I took a Dutch friend to Rome with me for vacation. Now, the Dutch are renowned for their fluency in multiple languages. It's partly why I brought him. But this guy?
