Can I just say that I appreciate what you do here on TH-cam!!? I mean, it is so evident that you put in so much thought into whatever you make for us; plus, you always go the extra mile to guide us through whatever you're explaining. You're a fantastic teacher, Joanie and a lovely person as well
You can scoop the ice cream place it on a sheet tray that has been in the freezer so it’s cold then place everything back into the freezer then when your ready take it and give it a quick flick with a blow torch that gives it a nice shine
I make ice cream, so this only applies to homemade ice cream, but thickening the milk with a roux or using some gelatin can stabilise the scoops enough to get an extra 2-5 minutes out of it. I've made a couple of batches with gelatin that are basically frozen mousse that have to be over halfway melted before they start loosing their scoop shape. (Actually frozen cheesecake filling/mousse would make a good, less plasticky, sub for shots where you don't need real ice cream.)
Are you controlling your video camera from your computer? Have I been an idiot this whole time? I keep realizing I never pressed record and always miss my shots. Please tell...
Yep! It's tethered to the Canon EOS Utility just like in the tethering video, but in video mode through the live view. Also, once you finish recording and close out of the live view for video, it automatically downloads the files to your computer from the camera. Definitely makes life easier
Shoot, I need to get on that. Thank you! Did you see my Casey Neistat video? I really took a leap yesterday...it has yet to to deliver the result I wanted! But gotta keep on going, ya know? Still learning this crazy world.
Best video yet! I was wondering when you were going to do a video about ice cream. Love that you brought in another photographer to share there tips as well as your own. Look forward to more of your videos.
hey joanie, am just a beginner in food photography and your channel has helped me a lot, i have a canon 600 D and i wanted to ask you what aspect ratio do u shoot in?
This is Great. I own a Gelato and Crepe shop and also a photographer. I have been thinking of the best ways to shoot some of my creations for advertising. Your videos are very informative. New subscriber here. Thank you for your efforts in making these.
I found you this morning and now i have seen all your videos!!! They are amazing. I am a pastry chef but i was getting very frustrated because i do beautiful cakes and then in the photos they look awfull :( But now i think with your tips i will do beautiful photos. Thank you very much for sharing all your knowlege. I send you a big hug from Bogota, Colombia.
Great tip with the fake ice cream. I've seen one using mashed potato, it tend to look too firm. Never actually use it before but I already wondering what am I gonna do with colored mashed potato. Anyway, that frosting tip combined with your tip on condensation could really make it legit, thanks Joanie!! Oh and one question, does the freeze spray safe for food? Really don't want to waste any ice cream after taking a good shot
I just found your channel and I AM IN LOVE!!! YOUR CONTENT IS EVERYTHING I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR! Thank you so breaking everything down so simply. I do have one video request: How do instagramers take food photos in restaurants? Let's say my friends and I want to go eat food and I don't want to be weird and bring all the photography gears with me except a camera, How can I take good food photos?
Also, you can form a hole in the bottom of the ice cream then shove a sliver of dry ice into the hole. That way, the ice cream stays cold from the inside out.
Love ice cream, and your videos but I have to say it, your cup caught my eye big time :) ..... and now I know how to make face ice cream to put on top of my real cakes.
I didn't see Kim Brough Daniels contact info in the description of your video so if anyone wnated a link here is her Instagram contact instagram.com/kimbroughdaniels/
Not in the USA! By law you MUST photograph the food that you are selling. Supporting food items *can* be substituted. If you are selling pancakes, then you can use motor oil instead of syrup because it will not soak into the hero. If you are selling corn flakes, then you can fill the bowl with white glue instead of milk otherwise the hero will get soggy.

Ask the client what they expect, then shoot in that ratio.

Hahaha truth in advertising, so many commercials and ads have not the actual product.
Not in the USA! By law you MUST photograph the food that you are selling. Supporting food items *can* be substituted.
