0:37 thats how i feel for when the celestial dragons start taking their losses finally. The first weirdly good feeling was their food storage. Which is a crazy thing to say lol
That's my favorite part, too. The Celestial Dragons not only lost their food storages, but they also feel what its like feeling hungry. Not that I should feel sorry for those greedy scum. I remember in chapter 1089 that everyone, including the Cipher Pol hostages are having their nice warm meals, while York is chained to the ground while facing the consequences. Nobody cares about York's hunger while crying and begging to be saved. It's funny because York wants to be a Celestial Dragon so badly that she got her wish. Being chained to the ground, watching everyone have warm meals, and experience hunger.
yeah, the irony of York's situation is quite amusing. She wanted to be a Celestial Dragon so badly, and now she's experiencing firsthand the hunger and consequences they face.@@rodoshehossain7400

I love that you brought up Arlong. I've been hoping a lot lately, that Oda will have Arlong appear in the story again, and that we will see his take on the fact that he nearly stopped and tried to kill the actual Joyboy. And how he feels about it in the context of his mentor Fisher Tiger, and even more interestingly to me, that his nemesis and former fellow crew-member, Jimbe, has joined w this Joyboy and is fulfilling the world-saving mission! Like Arlong: chose to fight Luffy and lost and is either in Impel Down or somewhere else, decidedly not* living his best life. Whereas Jimbe, rose above the hate, kept being himself(which is a pretty awesome self imo) and is changing the world as the best Helmsman ever on a Yonko's crew.. I'm dying for even just one panel w Arlong having some type of recognition or reflection over this.. Just one panel w a line or 2 even would be awesome to me.. After watching part about Doffy it made me think about some interesting parallels and some key differences between Jimbe and Arlong, and Law and Doffy. Both pairs have had some similar experiences and trauma, but the way Jimbe and Law turned out is worlds away from how Arlong and Doffy ended up. Tho to be fair Rosinante played a big role in that process for Law too, Law may have been like Doffy w out Rosinante.. This is just such a rich story I love it.. Awesome vid I really enjoyed this perspective and analysis of "failed Joyboys" 🔥💯 Gr8 stuff
I want nami to just to go to inpel down and tell hody and how he killed so many fishmen because of the hate arlong gave him and how luffy went and saved the fishmen and have arlong reflect on how his ideology nearly killed countless fishmen andalmost exterminated his race and now his ideology is forgotten and his greatest enemy is his people's greatest hero.
Totoland has another strong theme that goes in opposition to Luffys value of freedom. Consent. Totoland in theory is pretty magical with all the deserts, diversity, and protection, but people aren't there by choice. They were either born under tyranical matriarchal rule, or kidnapped to join Linlin's morbid collection, nobody freely consents to join totoland and even the "leave or life" ultimatum is a false choice because it's an open secret that nobody leaves alive
totoland presents an interesting contrast to Luffy's value of freedom, as consent is lacking and people are not there by choice. The ultimatum to leave or die is a false choice, as leaving is rarely an option.
@@jeremysmith7176 They have no real choice to leave because of the dangers of the new world plus the threat of being hunted down like Lola. It's called a coersive agreement
The reason Jinbei hasn't joined the fight is because Kizaru was the one that saved him and the Sun Pirates from the wrath of the World Nobles that desired to execute them because they belied the Sun Pirates had kidnapped Koala and since there were no evidence to prove otherwise there was no way to convince them. So Kizaru blamed the Marines , thus himself and his unit for incompetence and irresponsibility to detect and capture the actual slave traders.Furthermore if you recall back in Marineford , Kizaru is one of the only people Jinbei never exchanged fists with and even if it would have been child's play for Kizaru to blast him with Yasakani no Magatama , he also didn't consider crossing him.Probably they respect each other a lot. Kizaru has also been really sus and mysterious in this arc.I am not talking about his battle with Luffy.I am talking about his actions. When he was still talking with Saturn in Saturn's transport ship some chapters back he was shown to agree with him but once Saturn decided to make claims that would create conflict between Kizaru and his friends , Kizaru immediately interrupted him and proceeded to disagree with him. What's more during the fight he managed to get really close to the Vegatank 08 while Luffy was trying to reach him. That was when the Vegatank 08 was crossing the cloud road.Kizaru got really close to them within shot distance and he still missed hitting bull's eye. After that in his second attempt is when Luffy caught up to him and countered the lazer beam. Those are in chapter 1094.Probably Kizaru intentionally missed at the first shot as he couldn't bring himself to murdering his friend Vegapunk.Sentomaru is also alive despite Saturn ordered Kizaru to not show mercy to anyone that'd dare stand in his way. Just saying.
when did that happen, if thats just headcannon idk why you would even think that, jombe said he was preparing the ship when he sensed the aura, which is on the other side of the island, its gonna take hkm a while before he comes back he aint got luffy's speed
It really showed that nothing good came from the smile fruit. You either lost your emotions or you lost your humanity. Otama's power doesn't work on humans, so the gifters simply became beast after eating the fruit.
If anything, it is related to folklore in Japanese called Momotaro. The story of Momotaro can be summarized (and oversimplified) this way: Momo feed three animals (dog, monkey, and pheasant) with his dango and it tamed them like almost instantly and they goes wherever Momo goes. I think it's only a reference but I agree that as a foreigner that not knowing too much about the reference, Otama's power is truly terrifiying but since I happened to know a bit of the story, I don't find it too disturbing when I was thinking, "Oh it's just a reference and nothing too deep to think of"
I heard somewhere that Tama's fruit only works for a few days and when this time ends the creature gets to decide if they want to be free or still be friends with Tama
I was rewatching the Onigashima raid yesterday and after watching the Pleasures stand up and defend Chopper from Queen it made me think how many of the Beast Pirates may have flipped sides and possibly may not have been imprisoned in Udon like King and Queen were and could be helping to restore Wano now after seeing just how little the upper members of the Beast Pirates actually cared for them. Hell sasaki was mowing down pirates who had come to support him battling Franky meanwhile Franky was trying to keep them safe. Knowing that Wano is more vulnerable now with Kaido gone it would be neat to see the reformed members of the Beast Pirates helping and bolstering the power of Wano
You glossed over Big Mom's happiest day bringing nothing but absolute disaster, even as a 6 year old. Imagine if Big Mom finally accepted her new family over her old one to let herself feel that joy once more, and they cook her another Sanji cake. Now imagine Big Mom going throhgh happiest day 2.0 and the ruin she would bring the world just to find them
I remembered when I saw Totto Land, it reminds me of the Coraline movie. Like WCI arc, in Coraline, there's a cat who knows the truth about the other world and can talk there. Unlike Pedro, who sacrificed his life, the cat is still alive in the Coraline movie. Now that Big Mom's no longer a Yonko, Totto Land is no longer a powerful nation. Just like many islands in the New World, it'll be constantly attacked by enemies, Marines, Government officials, and even those who suffered. In other words, Totto Land and Big Mom Pirates are gonna experience what its like suffering and watching their homes crumble to pieces. Even if Orochi's dead for good, it'll take a long time for Wano to recover, especially those who suffered over 20 years. Maybe one day, they'll find a cure for SMILEs. My favorite scene is where Kaido sliced Orochi's head, shows he doesn't give shit about his goals and was used as mere pawn. As for Hawkins, it's nice to see him get a taste of his own medicine. After the terrible things Hawkins has done, he got what he deserves. For York, I hope her head is obliterated into pieces.
The part where Yasuie died and Otoko and the other citizens of Ebisu are just laughing while crying is just so messed up. Nobody wants to smile when someone dies! Not even in funeral. And Killer eating the Smile fruit to protect Kid is basically his "Nothing Happened" moment
0:51 that’s why I always wanted to smile like Luffy when was starting out on one piece at the beginning I always wanted to smile big so I could have a crew of my own
I am rewatching one peice right now and I am on episode 48 where the straw hats arrive on logue town. Smoker is addressing a band of pirates and their leader has a crescent beard and hat that makes a moon. Given what is happing with figarland right now, I find it interesting that oda would add someone with the same haircut as figarland so early in the series.it’s cool that he was introduced in logue town, where roger was born and executed along with the name of the episode with is “the town of the begging and the end, landfall at logue town”. It’s probably all a coincidence but it’s cool.
What I'm still hoping for is Zoro's request to Vegapunk, that we never got to see fully said, is him finding a way to save those who ate the Smile fruit.
Smiling (or more specifically, baring your teeth) is also a primal sign of aggression. If you watch a boxing fight, its not uncommon for someone to instinctively flash a toothy smile after getting tagged in the face.
See? This is a legit TH-cam channel. I'm tired of the channels that offer re-reads of the chapter I JUST read...you deserve your followers, Liam. Keep doing what you do, fam.
Can someone explain how they know which smile fruit is effective? Or do the beast pirates have a lot of members who only have the negative effects of the defective smile fruit?
Yup, we are shown the waiters, people waiting to eat the fruit, the pleasures, people who ate the fruit and lost the gamble and the gifters, who won the 10% of getting zoan powers, albeit a bit strange
The basic premise at the beginning of this video is reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’s conversion story. He didn’t believe because we live in an evil world, but he realized: how could he know about evil, and absolute evil, unless there is also an absolute good? And there is absolute good, how is it defined? And he settled on G-d. Basically akin to how we can know what happiness is without sadness.
I think we can add one more layer on it. Everything is about laughing, the biggest of all smiles. Every important figure has an individual laugh, while our protagonist monkey D. Laughy is searching the island of laughtale while being joyboy, who Laughs, when he is in his prime gear 5. Those who ate the smile fruit weren't just smiling. They were laughing. So, joyboy will not only bring a smile on the face but will put a genuine laugh into the heart of everyone.
There's a theory that the "D" initial also can be represented by the moon kanji in names of Wano like kozuki or shimotsuki; it would make so much sense then that both Oden and Yasuie died with smiles on their faces, since they're "D" from Wano
I just realized something. Everyone can live to be Dr. Kureha's age or maybe even the giants age, but there are so many things in this world that are hacking away at everyone's lifespans such as constant starvation, magical soul contracts, and just stress in general that all humans in the One Piece world are working themselves into an early grave.
I only recently got caught back up and am dipping my toe back into the fandom after many years. But I havent heard anyone referencing the meaning of Law's virus smile Jolly Roger. It's the same smile as Doflamingo's, only not crossed out. Instead it's got lines around the circumference that make it look like stylized a virus. Maybe it's just old news now. Law is so salty and opposed to Doflamigo that he now wants to spread "joy" like a virus to spite him. Which I think is neat, because he hardly knows joy himself, its like a foreign concept to him. He has a really fascinating role, struggling in this smile war, too.
"Oda takes a traditionally tragic concept like death and flips it into a moment of infinite optimism." Liam that was actually so beautiful I teared up and have written it down to remember
One kind of subverted smile you didn't mention is the smile frozen on Koala face when she was released from tenryubito's slavery. We see the same faked smile on Kuma and his father on the last chapter. And in the Kaido's Flashback, we saw that both Kaido and Big Mum where smiling when they were convinced they'll be the next pirate king (or queen). I don't know for Whitebeard, but being king of the pirate was never is goal. You are rigth tho, smile and the subversion of it is obviously very important in One Piece.
That are definitely a couple things in one piece that seem way too dark and that's probably why they don't fully flesh out the descriptions of these events because it would change the rating of one piece to mature probably
There was a recent horror movie about smiling and murder, Smile 2022. It kinda also includes the cognitive dissonance of smiling when least appropriate and without genuine happy feelings, if I read into it correctly.
As a writer, I fully accept the fact that I do not have the guts, the cajones, the *balls* to make a world half as awful to exist in as One Piece. If not for the presence of Luffy and his humor and optimism, One Piece could very well be on the level of Berserk in terms of "Hey, read this if you wanna screw up your mental state for a while", and the fact that it _isn't_ despite the atrocities present in its story and world is frankly astonishing.
ever thought about how luffy, the sun god, came from the east blue like how the sun rises from the east, i wonder if theres going to be anything to do with the west at the end of the story like how the sun sets in the west. I wonder if oda had this planned all along
Yeah it's really hard to say the smile fruit thing is messed up when the celestial dragons are using entire countries as a human hunting ground for sport, that is some seriously messed up stuff, you know genocide is not the only thing that happens in these situations. There was nothing more unerving then seeing Ivankov being so chill and optimistic in that situation.
I always feel like if any other pirate found this "treasure" one piece, then they wouldnt think of it as anything worth finding. no gold no jewels, just a story of the past that makes luffy laugh. Roger wishing he could have met joy boy makes so much sense if the image he seen was an otherworldly cartoon that Nika was able to create.
I don't know if this has been put out there but what if the will of D has something to do with the fact that if you turn the D on its side it looks like a smile. Just a thought.
One Piece has a lot of heavy topics and settings. It starts nice in comparison in the very first arc with Coby, a weak little boy, spending two years of his life as a prisoner/slave among pirates, and dreaming of becoming a marine to help people because he would have needed that help himself. And then the first marines he meets are Morgan and Helmeppo... 🙃 At the time of the beginning of Egghead Island arc, we have seen many worse scenarios. What do you think is the worst we have seen in One Piece on a general level, and what is the worst individual situation in your opinion?
I think I gotta say this but I really love/hate your channel in the best way possible. For starters I hate your reviews of chapters you do just because your videos are so masterfully done and compelling that sometimes I can't help but watch them sometimes before I even read the new chapters and yes, I'm blaming you for that. Why are your videos so well done?! Must be all that time in Theater. But I love your videos even more especially ones like these during the breaks so I can really see things from a new perspective and look at things in ways I didn't think before and it really is a cool thing. Because of you I have my own One Piece theories I've never heard anyone else say before and it's really fun to try to put the pieces together in ways that I think will work and not to brag but I think I have some good ones lol, or not IDK. Anyway, just wanted to say that. Epic videos, I love them
So I just thought of something related to luffys' time limit. What if there will be a weapon of some kind for him on laughtale? Nika did have a sword. Maybe it's a sword. Maybe this sword recharges him?
Warlord of the Sea and king of Dressrosa. His real name is Don Quixote Doflamingo AKA The Heavenly Demon, or "Joker" in the underworld. He produces artificial Devil Fruits called "SMILEs." He wields the power of the String-String Fruit and strings he uses can manipulate humans, slice through any object, and even loop around clouds to lift him
Hey, I tried to visit your merch but it always tells me the link is “unavailable”, do you know any way I could access it? I tried from this and another video’s description, the channel’s description, and every time with Chrome, Google, Safari and default software(safari again for me)
That's the thing about the world of One Piece, it's basically a world where you know the typical supervillain actually conquers the world type deal, it's a unique idea of a world that rarely gets explored.
Lets not forget about Robin laughing the way Saul taught her, even as everyone she knew and cared about, as well as the island she grew up on were all completely destroyed.
To quote the main protagonist from my favorite game franchise, Kazuma Kiryu (Yakuza/Like a Dragon): “Life will always have ups and downs. And if we don't have the bad parts, we'll never appreciate the good ones.” Oda uses this concept to it's fullest, and I will always appreciate that!
I always thought it would’ve been cool if chopper cured the smile victims- Like he was on the island the fruit were manufactured on, so what if he took some research notes or samples before they left or something, then in the background when they had time he could’ve been doing tests, and had some epiphany in wano
This feels like a golden GLR video, and reminds me why I've watched every single one of your videos for years. Minor clickbait, dry Australian humor, and some real in depth analysis of that manga I like.
Naa. I was thinking about this earlier. My mom, dad and cousins. Friends. They all got caught up in the drama without noticing. It looks like a cartoon but these characters are living a nightmare that reflects our real world. One piece is deep. Anyone tht watches one piece for too long will become addicted
Grand line what’re your thoughts on kaido not being awakened ? Also can’t believe Marco isn’t awakened I wonder what their awakenings are and how they’re triggered
Pretty sure the introduction of slavery by the Sabaody archipelago arc and furthered more in Amazon Lilly’s kinda said “yes it’ll get worse from here”. 😂
In the case of the people of Wano this quote says it all.. "The saddest people smile the brightest." Author Unknown Also seeing Nami in a bikini on top of a pile of treasure makes me smile.
My mom watched the first gear 5 with me (and in her words: ''It was cool but i can't understand a thing, everyone's moving too fast and complicated for me''). And one thing she said was: ''So, this guy (Luffy) his mouth is smiling but his eyes are angry? Is he happy or is he angry? and this other guy (Kaido), its exactly the same, so who's the bad guy then? I just see two guys fighting. And both of them are smiling but why?'' That fight was the only thing she ever saw of one piece.

There are civilians who choose Toto Land to live under the protection of an Emporer.
totoland presents an interesting contrast to Luffy's value of freedom, as consent is lacking and people are not there by choice. The ultimatum to leave or die is a false choice, as leaving is rarely an option.
Big mom is just a hypocrite
Says pirates should live freely but denies that to others
@@jeremysmith7176 They have no real choice to leave because of the dangers of the new world plus the threat of being hunted down like Lola. It's called a coersive agreement
"But for now it's back to you, me", is so iconic. I almost always look forward to the ad break just to hear it.
Dude you're high.
O-Tama's power I find super disturbing as well. mainly how alright everyone is with it.
Yeah it was kinda screwed up. She basically does the same thing as Sugar but no one really bats an eye to it.
@@kristophesiem5336 yes it is directly stated by Otama herself in the manga (which I think will be explained too in the anime soon)
The only thing holding Oda back is the magazine OP is published in if it was a seinen it would even more brutal
Or ask for some medication to heal his lack of sense of direction lol
Perhaps chopper will cure it
that'd be awesome, saving those affected by the Smile fruit would be a great development.
@@yasi5770 that's my hope, that would be amazing to give chopper that win.
@@yasi5770I think i saw Oda said there will be no cure for the Smile fruit because why would you wanna make people not happy
13:02 "All we need to know is that they are creating artificial smiles filled w sad." So well said! That's deep imo
Smiling (or more specifically, baring your teeth) is also a primal sign of aggression. If you watch a boxing fight, its not uncommon for someone to instinctively flash a toothy smile after getting tagged in the face.
Dark Stuff always hits harder when its not on the nose and also in a Universe that appears bright as a contrast
See? This is a legit TH-cam channel. I'm tired of the channels that offer re-reads of the chapter I JUST read...you deserve your followers, Liam. Keep doing what you do, fam.
tekking does too, but yea liam goes deep with this
Can someone explain how they know which smile fruit is effective? Or do the beast pirates have a lot of members who only have the negative effects of the defective smile fruit?
There were smiles where the spirals didn't fully cover the fruit shown in dressrosa, those were likely the defective batches
yeah the pleasures are mostly the guys whose fruit didnt work, gifters got the powers and waiters are well waiting to eat the fruit
Bro you're foul for the Mr. Beast-esque thumbnail cuz Kaido is literally THE Mr. Beast in One Piece
HAHAHA That thumbnail!!! 😂 You just KNOW Kaido is on some nefarious shit
10:42 The Yellow Smile
"Oda takes a traditionally tragic concept like death and flips it into a moment of infinite optimism."
Liam that was actually so beautiful I teared up and have written it down to remember
I love how your videos are getting longer and longer plus Good Guy Kaido
Theory Time: Boggard is the leader of sword hence him having a sword and the secretest of secret names and face hmmm
Waiting for ODA to reveal that PAN D. MAN is ONE PIECE....
ever thought about how luffy, the sun god, came from the east blue like how the sun rises from the east, i wonder if theres going to be anything to do with the west at the end of the story like how the sun sets in the west. I wonder if oda had this planned all along
this is the reason i think the D doesn't actually stand for anything, it's literally just a textspeak smile
Me before Señor Pink’s flashback: LOL he’s so weird
After: Sir, you are one of the most compelling characters I’ve ever read and I salute you 😢
Imagine in the end, Blackbeard is good and basically nullifies the smiles for everyone...
My brain at 4:38: Due to your fear of clowns you have to panic.
I don't know if this has been put out there but what if the will of D has something to do with the fact that if you turn the D on its side it looks like a smile. Just a thought.
First HXH dark moments. Now One piece dark moments... what a start to my day
One Piece has a lot of heavy topics and settings. It starts nice in comparison in the very first arc with Coby, a weak little boy, spending two years of his life as a prisoner/slave among pirates, and dreaming of becoming a marine to help people because he would have needed that help himself. And then the first marines he meets are Morgan and Helmeppo... 🙃
At the time of the beginning of Egghead Island arc, we have seen many worse scenarios.
Epic videos, I love them
I love this observation about all of luffys enemies smiling. It makes their individual laughs seam alot more deep and dark than just a goofy laugh
He produces artificial Devil Fruits called "SMILEs." He wields the power of the String-String Fruit and strings he uses can manipulate humans, slice through any object, and even loop around clouds to lift him
The Mr Beast parody thumbnail is hilarious.
Whoever your artist is, they deserve a bonus for executing that so perfectly
Hey, I tried to visit your merch but it always tells me the link is “unavailable”, do you know any way I could access it?
I tried from this and another video’s description, the channel’s description, and every time with Chrome, Google, Safari and default software(safari again for me)
Well, how about the Sugar and Toys shenanigans during Dressrosa?
I despise the Doflamingo quote. People all use it unironically despite it being subverted in the same arc it gets spouted
If this flashback we’re in includes the entire God Valley story, it’s about to be goated on highhhhh!!
god doflamingo’s speech still gives me chills. also funny that his moniker was “joker”
A moment of silence for Señor Pink...
Being reminded of his story made me cry. Anyone else?
Why do people always get wrong that it was not Kaido who fed the people of Wano SMILEs. It was Orochi!
After the latest chapters I realize that One Piece has one of the most cruel and messed up worlds in anime or manga
Doflamingo was so generous that he spread smiles to many people
That's the thing about the world of One Piece, it's basically a world where you know the typical supervillain actually conquers the world type deal, it's a unique idea of a world that rarely gets explored.
Also I can't help bit shudder when I see the smiles of those that ate the faulty smile fruits. I would rather die than be cursed to that emotion
And if we don't have the bad parts, we'll never appreciate the good ones.”
Oda uses this concept to it's fullest, and I will always appreciate that!
just like the saying from a certain takuan; there is no light without darkness
I always thought it would’ve been cool if chopper cured the smile victims-
Like he was on the island the fruit were manufactured on, so what if he took some research notes or samples before they left or something, then in the background when they had time he could’ve been doing tests, and had some epiphany in wano
The Thumbnail Should definitely be named “Good Guy Kaido”😂
This feels like a golden GLR video, and reminds me why I've watched every single one of your videos for years. Minor clickbait, dry Australian humor, and some real in depth analysis of that manga I like.
The part around 8:00 sounds exactly like being employed at Disneyland haha-
A very cool and deep look into one piece!I wonder if gear 5 wacky attitude is based on the mask who always smiles as well haha
That Mr. Breast thumbnail is fucking genius
Is it confirmed that Whitebeard have Croc his face scar? I know it can be pretty easily assumed but has there been official confirmation?
Bro I love the freaking I gave 1,000 kids smile fruit With the freaking Mr. beast looking picture
1:06 Kaido Smile here is a lot better then how he his smile look in the series
This was a great video in both concept and execution. Kudos GLR, keep it up.
I'm convinced the final scene will be Brook playing Binks Sake for Laboon.
Love this thematic exploration - it’s good to take a zoom out every now and then to see things on a broader level
Pretty sure the introduction of slavery by the Sabaody archipelago arc and furthered more in Amazon Lilly’s kinda said “yes it’ll get worse from here”. 😂
In the case of the people of Wano this quote says it all..
"The saddest people smile the brightest."

Also seeing Nami in a bikini on top of a pile of treasure makes me smile.
This video single-handedly explained why One Piece is my favorite series. Perspective is everything in the face of adversity
5:20 oh no, why you draw LA Arlong😭
What if rocks d xebec was celestial dragon gone rouge. Potentially shanks uncle or dad????
My mom watched the first gear 5 with me (and in her words: ''It was cool but i can't understand a thing, everyone's moving too fast and complicated for me''). And one thing she said was: ''So, this guy (Luffy) his mouth is smiling but his eyes are angry? Is he happy or is he angry? and this other guy (Kaido), its exactly the same, so who's the bad guy then? I just see two guys fighting. And both of them are smiling but why?''
That fight was the only thing she ever saw of one piece.
