But Messi was able to be the player of the tournament in 2014 world cup and in the 2015 Copa America, even though they didn't win the tournament. When Portugal won EURO 2016, still Ronaldo wasn't the best player of the tournament. And of course Messi brought Argentina to 3 International Finals including 2014 FIFA World Cup while Ronaldo managed to do it only once and it was just EURO!..

This was amazing story for Portugal and Ronaldo. His dream was shattered when he got subbed but even he wasn't on the pitch he was motivating them off the pitch with the manager. He reminded me of Sir Alex at times when he was pointing to his watch. From day one I wanted Portugal to win the European Championship and they did.
