    Very interesting on how they put the Volume Knob on the Tailpiece & the Tone Knobs on the Chin rest (as well as the Audio Output) because this makes the instrument way lighter weight.

    The geared pegs certainly are a huge improvement from the friction pegs, & they're a good match for expensive instruments too cause they'll preserve the headstock.

    Carleen Hutchins cleverly solved the playability problem of those larger Violas that are the optimized size for those low notes by reorienting to be played Vertically like a Cello.

    Violins with 5 (or more) Strings are also useful for Classical Musicians cause on a Gig there's a call saying "hey we need some violinists" you get there & it turns out they actually need a Violist. Extended range Violins are one of many types of Violins capable of reading Violin and Viola sheet music.

    Rob Flax I find that String players at all levels (beginner to expert) should have Carbon Composite Acoustic-Electric Instruments as well as Carbon Composite bows with Synthetic Bow hair on them because they're a lot sturdier plus the pickup allows a headset to be plugged in for quiet practice. The 5 String versions (tuned C, G, D, A, E from low to high in Fifths including the Bass cause it has better intonation) would make the kids happy cause they have a full 5 Octave range which facilitates transposing on the fly to fit the ranges of other instruments, vocalists, or even both especially on church gigs.

    Spaghetti Western Songs by Ennino Morricone sound awesome with a 5 String Violin cause of those lower pitches which sound ideal for a new cover since Ennino Morricone sadly Died. The 5 String Violin Body is slightly larger than a 4 String Body to help the Low C resonate.

    The fun thing about the extended range Violins is that the extra strings makes it easier to transpose on the fly to fit the ranges of other instruments, vocalists, or even both especially on a Church gig. The Wood 7 String Viper Violin with Frets is the easiest one to play cause with 7 strings (added Low C, F, & Bb) you can play in every key, geared tuners makes it easier to tune, the strap supports it, & the metal frets makes it easier to find all the notes especially for blind people that wanna learn violin cause they can feel the notes. The Cello is held vertically & the King Cobra 6 String Fretted Cello is the easiest to learn thanks to the extra strings to facilitate transposition, geared tuners, & frets. The instrument hold ya thanks to a strap. They're great for both symphony Orchestras cause they can add a bit of rock n roll, as well as Show Choirs that wanna bow along on a bowed instrument while they sing cause sometimes you just need to add a little bit of Rock N Roll (in other words sometimes you just gotta change it up).

  • @RockStarOscarStern634

    Rob Flax One thing you can do on a 5 String Violin that you can't do on a Standard Violin really well is play Cello pieces up an Octave because the 5 String Violin is one of many Violins that can read Cello music up an Octave. In that case we should do Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor up an Octave on a 5 String Violin.

    • @RobFlaxMusic

    You may wanna put Wittner Fine Tune Pegs on your other Violin (along w/ a Wittner Tailpiece that dosen't have fine tuners) because it'll really enhance it. The lack of fine tuners on the Tailpiece livens up the sound by allowing the top to vibrate more freely exactally like a Baroque Violin.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634

    Hi, Great video, this is the first time I've found you on youtube but I'll look for other videos now. Can you tell me what shoulder rest you put on? I also have an amazing red Glasser 5 string. I have a Kun rest, but I find the foot position is in conflict with the extra chin rest twiddly thing foot. Looking for a new shoulder rest anyway....but not sure which one to order on-line as I can't escape lockdown to visit a store.

    • @RobFlaxMusic
      @RobFlaxMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I struggled with finding a good shoulder rest for years, and then discovered a technique change that allowed many more options: my teacher at NEC encouraged me to practice without a shoulder rest. The result: I learned to rely on my collarbone more readily, and so now almost any shoulder rest works better.
      That said, I have an Everest shoulder rest on the Glasser now. and a stupid fancy one whose brand I can't remember on Miss Molly (my Roth).

    Loved this video, thank you! I’m seriously thinking of getting one of these. I currently have an awesome, antique classic violin but I’m actually thinking of selling it. It’s so delicate, so many situations I don’t want to take it (outside, hot, humid, cold, etc). Could this replace an acoustic violin if I’m not playing a ton of Classical performances? Or do you recommend to have both kinds?

    • @RobFlaxMusic
      @RobFlaxMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely! The main selling point I see used to market these is precisely that: they're durable and safe to use in places a more delicate instrument might not be great (like an outdoor show at a farmer's market, or a hot festival stage). I haven't left my house in a year, so instead I ended up putting octave strings on my Glasser and now it's become a "chin cello." You can watch that journey here: th-cam.com/video/ZLsRBPGQ0Jg/w-d-xo.html
      As far as replacing goes, I am a hoarder, constantly acquiring new instruments and gear, so I cannot actively endorse getting rid of the wooden violin. They're different instruments, and while the Glasser does a fine job as an acoustic instrument, it's definitely less resonant than my nearly hundred year old Roth. Your mileage may vary!

    • @sumernoel1553
      @sumernoel1553 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobFlaxMusic Cool, thanks! Yes, I hear you. The thing that I’m weighing out is that I’d like to invest in new equipment that I currently don’t have like some of those cool pedals and acoustic electric instruments, etc. The cost of the one instrument that I do have could buy me all those things, plus lessons, plus some workshops, plus more cool stuff, plus probably another wooden instrument that would also be good but maybe not as exclusive as the one I currently have. You know what I mean? 🤔🤷‍♀️ I can say my life has taken a hard left turn away from classical and towards all kinds of new realms I’d like to explore/move into it.
