  • Meet the wonderful Welsh Terrier! Hailing from Northern Wales, this breed was meant to hunt badgers, otters, foxes, and other tough critters. While the Welsh terrier is tough, intelligent, and a hard worker like other terrier breeds, it is said to be less quarrelsome than other terriers.
In this episode of Dog Nerd Show, we meet Marcela and her Welsh Terrier, Paco. Like other terriers, the Welsh terrier is a dog that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, will alert you if anyone is at (or near) your home, and makes a great family dog.
In this episode we discuss the following:
    Do Welsh terriers Shed?
Do Welsh terriers bark a lot?
    Are Welsh terriers active dogs?
    Are Welsh terriers smart?
    Do Welsh terriers dig?
Are Welsh terriers a healthy breed?
Do you have a Welsh terrier? Let us know what you love about this dog breed!

I love my Welshie! She's 4yrs but on a cold day you'd think we was a senior lol she will lay happily curled up in her doughnut bed for most of the day and saunter out upset if I make her go stretch her legs. Then when on my Dad's farm she will run all day checking in with us often or returning when she's called. She is happy to be where we are and in no way upset on slower days to laze about. So she's either go go go or slow and snoozy. She keeps snakes, rats and mice off our property and LOVES to. She loves to snuggle and loves playing outdoors with our kids (homeschooled so always together with her) so long as she's apart of the rule making for the play lol. We adopted her not looking for a specific breed but so happy we now know the Welsh Terrier. You wont regret this breed! One thing to keep in mind though is that you cannot have birds, chickens, rats or other small pets as they will chase to kill. I am curious whether or not Welsh Terriers are able to keep home with cats if anyone has any experience.

Wow, she sounds amazing! That's great that she keeps unwanted critters off your property. Such a good girl! We have border terriers and they are very prey driven too. We were told they aren't good with cats unless they are raised with them. I wonder if that's true for Welsh terriers as well. Thanks so much for sharing about your girl and for watching, we really appreciate it!

Hi--nice job. As previous owners of a wire fox terrier, two airedales and now a welsh terrier, we think you have accurately represented the characteristics of the breed. As a comparison, the wire fox terrier was a tightly wound spring--always ready to unwind. The first airedale (that we brought back from championship stock in England) was a true gentleman. The second was fun, but not nearly as polished. The welsh is a beautiful blend of both. Digging?--you bet--so what--the backyard is hers. Loving?--abundantly. Smart?--incredibly. Sociable?--the queen of the neighborhood. So, we think our dog breed choices reflect our stages of life. Wire fox terrier as young adults--airedales as parents--welsh terrier as grandparents. Makes perfect sense.

Thanks so much! We love that you've had various terriers and think it's cool how they represent your stages of life. Terriers are so much fun and it's interesting to hear about the differences between the four that you've had. The Welsh definitely sounds like a more mellow, yet still active terrier. Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it as well as your insight!

I am on my third Welsh terrier the first Welsh and I learned agility and how to hunt rats, game birds, she would hunt most anything. The second Welsh had a short life due to a birth defect according to the vets very rare the breeder replaced the pup with nogano he is a classic male Welsh - where's the party - call the girls - get me a beer his hunting record is also very good. Clicker training works very well with these guys and they become show offs with their tricks very quickly. Chani my first Welsh had the best air hang time she would run around me at the end of a retrack leash then break across the circle about head high and float across in front of me in absolute enjoy we called it her Will Rogers act. One of the few dogs I can send to folks by teaching the dog the person's name. If you like to play if you think these guys are game on LoL

I'm absolutely terrier person! I grew up together with my aunt's Westie and he was my best friend, always protective of me and ready to play in the water with me. She currently has a Cairn Terrier as the oldest little leader of a pack of 2 Spinones and a Burmese Mountain dog and she definitely holds her own.
I've had my Yorkie for 12 years now, we've been together since I was in middle school and she's my little buddy! She chose me as her person and although Yorkies often get overlooked at terriers, she absolutely has all the personality traits of bigger terriers in a tiny package: the hunting, the barking to let you know there's people around, the climbing, and the independence. We have a 6 year old Havanese as well and half the time my Havanese seems like the senior dog and people still confuse my Yorkie as a puppy!
I've been researching Welsh Terriers as my eventually family dog and found your video! Super informative! Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! We are totally terrier people too and I (Megan) grew up with Yorkies! My parents have stuck with Yorkies and the last one that we had when I lived at home was my best buddy. He lived until 15 and waited for me to get home before he passed away in my arms. He was an amazing little dog. I even wrote that experience into the first chapter of my first book. While it was so hard to go through, in time I realized how lucky I was that he waited for me and was honored that he chose to pass in my arms. Gosh, he was the perfect Yorkie. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video, Welsh terriers seem like a great combo of all the terrier traits with a little less intensity. Thanks for sharing all about the dogs you and your family have in your lives, you sound like an amazing dog-loving family, so of course, we're glad you found us!

Hey guys thanks for making this video about Welsh Terriers! I have one and he's amazing. Only 8 months old now and already well behaved and lots of fun! Biggest problem was play biting and jumping up on people with when excited. He's getting much better with it as he matures and is training. I really love the energetic joy and affectionate nature of this breed. Unlike the owner of the Welshie interviewed here, my pup is also alert but not super territorial and absolutely not at all a big barker, although the opportunities are frequent for such behavior. In fact, this is one of the reasons that I got a Welshie as they are not only strong, intelligent, and social, but they tend to bark less than many breeds, including other terriers. I've also not had an issue with him of wanting to be in control or dominance. He is appropriately independent as terriers tend to be, but also very responsive to me. He is not keen to be in the highest place literally either. He is welcome to jump on the furniture and does so easily and often, but has never climbed up on the back of the sofa or up on the table. He does love to chase small animals, but likes to chase down a ball or frisbee even more. Yes, he does require a lot of exercise so I make time for that daily. It seems that like people, each dog is unique in personality. It's all good!

Hi Beth, thanks so much for your feedback on your experience with the breed! They sound like so much fun and so full of joy! Yes, it is true that every dog, just like every human, is unique. Welsh terriers do seem like wonderful family dogs who excel at training. We're glad to hear that the play biting and jumping up are subsiding and we're sure that's due to great training on your part! Thanks so much for watching!!

I am on a waiting list with a Welsh breeder right now. So, the plan is to have my first Welsh puppy later this year. I have owned several other terrier breeds, and consider myself to be very familiar with most of them, but have only recently really looked into the Welsh. I like what I am hearing and seeing. The digging stuff, and the need for outlets for energy is true for most terriers. I had a Patterdale who could not be exhausted! So, my backyard frequently had several four foot long trenches dug in the course of a week. The lawn did not survive. But, my Bedlington, and even my current Jack Russell, aren't nearly as bad with digging. The Bedlington preferred running and fetch to digging...thankfully. The Welsh appears to be more relaxed with strangers, and unfamiliar dogs, than some other terrier breeds, and that I like a lot. Nice presentation...I enjoyed the interview as well.

Thanks so much, Joshua! We're glad you enjoyed the show and can't wait to hear all about your new Welshie! You've owned some cool terrier breeds. We have border terriers and were told they might dig up our yards, but didn't have too much trouble with that. Usually, they only dug when there was something to go after. However, we have a mole in our yard now and they don't seem to care! They are 17 and 14 though, so I'm sure they would have caught it by now when they were 10 years younger! Keep us posted on your new pup and we hope you continue to enjoy our show!

@@DogNerdShow Thank you Megan! I will check in with your channel and keep you posted as my Welsh Terrier experience unfolds! Btw, I have owned two Skye terriers...neither of them dug holes...that I can recall? The Scottie was a mild digger, and so was the Wire Fox...but the latter was an escape artist who enjoyed watching our frantic attempts to re-capture him! My handsome Patterdale, Tarn, was a major excavator, and not the best fit for my home...but live an learn. Cheers!

Great! We're so happy this video helped! Welshies seem like amazing dogs. Keep us posted and let us know if you get one, or decide on another breed. Our best advice is to rescue, or if getting a puppy, be sure to find a really good, reputable breeder, even if you have to wait for a pup. The breeders who really care about their dogs produce healthier pups and are usually available to you with any questions or concerns you have as you raise your puppy. Thanks for watching!
